Any non-science majored people?

I am a government major, but I am determined to attend medical school. I am a junior in college. Although, I continue taking required classes for medical school. I have a strong background in sciences. I did just great in all my science classes.

I am curious if anyone is like-minded out there?

One more question: Is it a big deal/concern for Admissions Committee in med schools if a student is not a science major?
 
As long as you have and do well in the science reqs, it doesn't matter what you major in.
 
I've been told a number of times that they actually like having non-science majors -- you know, the whole "well-rounded" idea.

I was a Bible/Theology major. Accepted no prob.

Go for it.
 
I hope your avatar is meant to be ironic. At the very least it doesn't jive with your proclaimed dislikes. :laugh:

Looking at your post count, Drogba, I'd say someone's been busy.
 
I'm considering Asian Languages or Linguistics over my current biology major. I love biology, but I've always been interested in languages, so it's a toss-up.

Haha I'm not sure where that came from, but you aren't too far behind yourself. My post frequency will drop precipitously in a month and a half.

I thought, if anything, I would earn your gratitude for telling you 1/4 of applicants are non-science majors. I guess your avatar is pretty important to you though ;]

Generally, people who get answered to their questions are adequate not to agrue. But, when people get unrelated answers to their questions are adequate to agrue. 😛
 
I'm a music major...

as long as your do well in the pre-med pre-reqs and rock the MCAT you should be fine!

I will say though that I felt like I had to study a lot more for the MCAT than some because parts of my bio background was a bit shaky (mol bio, genetics, etc).

If I did it again I would do the exact same thing. I wanted to study something outside medicine that interested me before med school and I don't regret it. 👍

I majored in Japanese.
 
Non-science major here, so that shouldn't stop you. but if they find out about your avatar, your done for.

I'm not kidding.
 
I was an American Studies major. I didn't get in my 1st year, but can blame that on things other than my major. If you want to do something else, my advice is, go for it because you are going to be focusing on one (or very few) things for the rest of your life.

Major in whatever you like. Med schools truly don't care, as long as you have taken all the prereqs. This question gets asked over and over again-- probably because people are told by misinformed parents or other folks from back in the day, that they ought to be science majors in order to get into med school -- but honestly, there has been no advantage in admissions for science majors since the 1980s. If anything, nonsci majors have been the faster growing group in med schools since then.

I don't think it matters what you major in, as long as you've taken and done well in all your prerequisites.

P.S. - who's in your avatar (pardon my lack of general knowledge) and why is it so controversial?
 
Majored in German and Guitar, but am currently finishing a BA in biology for no good reason.

Well, it's commonly said in the media that Paris Hilton is famous for "doing nothing". But that's just being polite. She's actually famous for being the first debutante to break into the public limelight with a home made hard core internet porn video. She's a ground breaker, for sure. Many other rich, semi attractive heiresses were just looking for a way to get invited to celebrity parties, and they gratefully followed suit.

She also has the distinction of being the justification that democrats use when telling the country that if you die, Uncle Sam deserves all your money, because, gosh, if they let your family keep it they'd just become a bunch of Paris Hiltons.

Thank you U.S. government, for watching after my kids with the paris hilton tax! (the estate tax is what I'm talking about).
 
A guy i know knows a interviewer for University of South Alabama school of medicine, and he was told they want non-science majors. Med schools want you to major in things you enjoy. Dont just do bio because you have to. I am doing bio-psychology (neuroscience), but i really want physics as well.😀

I majored in Poli Sci and got in. The only thing that matters is that you do well in your science classes because you won't take as many as a major would and you have to keep the science gpa up.
 
I'm probably going to be an English major if my PI will still let me keep researching without being some sort of chem major.
 
What you major in really doesn't matter, as long as you excel in the pre-reqs (and in general, really). As someone else said, they like seeing non-science majors because it diversifies their student body.

Personally, I have a BFA in Theatre with a Psych minor. However, I'm going to be going back to school to finish the second bachelors I had half-completed before, which is in Psychobiology (I might just do Bio straight, but I'm not sure).
 
French/History major here. MSI no problem. THey do ask about it in your interviews so have a good answer as to why you're 'switching' paths or why you chose to do a non-science major.

I majored in Humanities after switching from science. There was so many interesting classes to choose from that I couldn't turn it down. I'm happy I was able to take advantage of interesting courses in literature, philosophy, psychology, religion and folklore/mythology. I mean... I'll be studying medicine forever. I think most of my interviewers were genuinely interested; it helped me stand out against other applicants. But you have to prove that you're a competent science student. I don't think you'll have a problem as long as you do very well in your pre-reqs and MCAT.

I would imagine that a non-science major would do pretty well in the VR and Writing section too- but I have no proof. 😕 Any thoughts?
 
Then again, if you're looking into a MD/PhD or research track, maybe you'll need to major in natural or biological science?

If you look at the statistics out there, many medical schools have almost 40% non-science majors. That is actually more than the percentage of non-science majors who apply. so i think that a good rule of thumb is to do what you like doing, but make sure to get a good science background to help you out with medical school. you'll have plenty of time to learn biology in medical school, so enjoy learning about other things now. it could even make you a better physician than all the science types out there.

Don't worry about major. It was never brought up except in a positive light during any of my interviews (Obviously, I am a non-science major). I ended up with multiple acceptances, so I think if anything, it only helped. However, you know yourself and if you feel like majoring in a science will greatly improve your chances of doing well on the MCAT, it may be worth your while. If there is something else that you absolutely love though, you should major in it and learn as much as you can before starting medical school.
