I'm a non-science major from UCI, graduating this summer. Good to see another anteater on board. I did a lot of my course work elsewhere, but I have managed to take some of the pre-reqs at UCI. I took bio 93, 94 and did my labs elsewhere because of time constraints.

hey, a fellow anteater. congrats on graduating this summer. so you only took 93 and 94 here huh? i am just wondering what bio classes to take because it seems that i have to take bio 93, 94, 97, 98, 99 in order to take the upper division labs...which would require the corresponding bio lectures. i don't think i'll have enough time to fill all those classes in

That was my problem too. What I did is contacted the dental schools that I was planning on applying to, and asked if they would accept units from community colleges or others accredited institutions. Once I got the okay, I ditched the UCI pre-req plan and decided to take the route that would save time. It's ridiculous how they make you take lectures for a year, and then make you take labs. This only works for those who start early, not for "Johnny come lately" or non-science major, like me. Good luck.

thanks for the heads up. what community college did you go to to take your bio classes?

Orange Coast (Cosa Mesa, about 12 minutes from UCI) and Golden West college (Huntington Beach). Both courses were very informative and challenging. Compared to the course that I did at UCI, I would say that the courses were comprable in education. Also, the accessibility to the professor is greater, hence a better letter of recomendation IMHO.

how many biology courses did you take total then? i have already enrolled in bio 93 next fall. do you suggest that i take bio courses at a community college instead? thanks! oh btw, i'm a 2nd year right now, so i'll be a 3rd year after spring

i'm just very lost at what bio classes to take for dental school.

If your a second year, I think you will do fine taking the courses at UCI. Start this fall with bio 93 (if you can try and take the course this summer, they are offering it on M,W,F), then take bio 94 (also offerred this summer), with lab. Take 97 & 98 and I think you will be fine. Check with the school of biological sciences to make sure. They have a listing of recomended courses for Dentistry and Medicine that they hand out to student. Also, don't forget that if you are planning to take physics at UCI, they only offer the calculus based series, so you will need to take calculus. If your not interested in doing the cal based series, look elsewhere for the physics (dental schools don't require the physics series, only the trigonometry bases ones). Take the three quarter of general chemistry (avoid Dr. Arrasasingham), and the organic chemistry series (also, three quarters). Again, taking them at another institution should consider if (a) you feel you have a greater chance of getting the grade you want (b) you are a non-science major and do not have enough time to complete the course work at your present institution (c) they offer the courses in a shorter amount of time (some places offer them in eight weeks) (d) cheaper tuition and (e) you have the time to take them with your full course load at UCI.

If you have any other question you can PM. I would be happy to answer any question, if I can.
