Before you say, "just check the MSAR, kiddo," I have seen those stats. They tell me how many have gotten in, but I want to know what kind of people have gotten in. I am a slightly above average pre-med with AZ residency who just wants to spend the rest of his life in a place that is neither unbearably hot, nor the polar opposite. If any of you know non-residents that got into California schools (other than Stanford or Keck), please post some stats. Thanks.

You're not from CA? This whole time I thought you were in-state. Where are you from?

You're gonna love it in Diego. Unless you're coming from Hawaii or somewhere, SD rules. 👍

yep, not from cali. i am so psyched for the warmer weather in san diego!!! will probably drive down there sometime in late august. you think that's enough time to get set up with everything? (buy furniture, buy books, figure my way around, find the closest path to the beach, etc...). how close are you living going to live to school?

Late August? Do you already have a place to live cause our mandatory orientation starts August 30 (finding an apartment can take a while). You might want to consider moving down here mid August at the latest just so you can get settled in (basically meaning check out the beaches.)

Where are you considering living? I'm about a 10-15 minute drive away from school. I live in a 1 bedroom place which is $950/month. Of course, the closer you live to campus, the more expensive it gets.

Well, here's the situation. I know UCSD is thought to be in La Jolla but it's not the same as downtown La Jolla. Downtown La Jolla is basically next to the beach and it's where all the rich/retired people live. Anything there will be super expensive.

The UCSD area actually has decent deals (still expensive compared to other places but cheaper than downtown La Jolla) if you want to get a 2-3 bedroom place and split the cost among roommates. The advantage is you're really close to school, the disadvantage is it's still somewhat expensive.

If you want to party, live cheaper, and live close to the beach, you can check out PB (Pacific Beach.) Tons of college kids, bars and clubs, and it's cheaper. The drive is about 15 minutes without traffic though.

There are places that are closer to UCSD (Clairemont Mesa, Mira Mesa) which are cheaper and somewhat close (10 minutes away without traffic.) Clairemont would probably be the cheapest but Mira Mesa is a little nicer.

The important thing to ask here though: are your roomates hot? You wanna introduce me to them? 😛

Mira Mesa would be perfect but "hoping2004" better start looking now. Penasquitos or Poway would be good options too but the rent will be higher.

so what's the average rent for the houses immediately around UCSD? i'm talking 3-4 bedroom places. hoping to live right around school so i can either walk or bike. i'm not a big fan of the idea of searching for parking every morning... and how about rent for mira mesa? okay, thanks for being my real estate agent for the day!

3 Br 2 Bath $2000

You would need a car.....~20 miles or so (give or take)

I wouldn't recomment Penasquitos or Poway. They're somewhat further north of UCSD and you'll hit heavy traffic everytime you're driving in the morning or afternoon.

Check out www.apartmentguide.com for prices. It's pretty good.

Also, in Mira Mesa, a 2 BR place is about 12-1300. I'm not sure how much 3BR places would be. If you want a 4BR place, you'd be looking for a house (which can be somewhat trickier to find since you have to look in the paper.)

Penasquitos or Poway is doable if you learn the back roads....you don't have to take the 15 to Miramar road. The optimum location/price is going to be Mira Mesa but you will still hit traffic on Mira Mesa Blvd.....
