just curious. after years of avoiding it, i'm thinking of playing casually. the trouble being, I don't know if it's possible to play casually (i.e. I've heard it can be quite addicting). thoughts or experiences?

i never got into WoW (not including the south park episdoe) if you are looking for another game in my opinion is way better, but just as addictve. get Battlefield 2

say goodbye to life...

Guild Wars is way better. Too bad it's a supermassive time sink.

This is a ridiculous question. How does someone WoW and stay a pre-med?

I once came home at 9 PM to find my managerial econ. major roomie sitting in the dark with his headphone/mic on his head. I turned on the light for him and when I asked why he hadn't turned on the light, he said he didn't realize how late it was.

What did he eat all day since he wakes up at 6 AM every morning? Nothing. Not a damn thing.

WoW playing pre-meds, indeed! Ha!

WoW is a terrible game.
My room mate failed two classes because all he did was sit in his bed and play WoW.

Ooo!! That reminds me of a whole apartment full of people from my high school who were kicked out of Davis in the same quarter for being hopelessly addicted to WoW.

Shocked, I asked one of them "don't you just get on probation if you have a 2.0"

"Yes," he responded, "but you need a 2.0..."

hmm...this makes me kind of hesitant to get into the MMORPG world. i was thinking more along the lines of "hey, I have an hour of dead time right now that I would otherwise use to watch TV or something, I think I'll play some WoW" as opposed to "I have a ton of stuff I need to do, but I think I'll play WoW instead".

Heres the catch to MMOs. All the fun stuff is when you are with a group doing something. When you are with a group, then you can't just leave when you have something else to do. You have to finish whatever is going on, then leave.

Guild Wars is such a huge timesink because when you try and PvP, you are trying to organize 8 people from every part of the world. So it takes hours to get set up, then once you begin playing it's really rude to leave before you do 5 or so matches (another few hours).

So, don't bother with WoW. You may think you have good time managment, but it's impossible to manage time well while playing an MMO.

play FPS games instead. They don't hold your attention for nearly as long but that really ends up being a good thing. It's better to be bored some of the time than to risk losing so much time to MMORPGs -- those games are seriously designed for jobless teens.

stay far away as possible from that cyber crack. Some kid shot himself because he couldn't give it up.

It's not worth it.

he clearly had other SERIOUS issues. you cant blame it on a computer game. i read about a similar situation..they tried to say some girl who was like 12 or something killed herself because someone said "you are not nice" on a personal myspace messsage. clearly, she had other isuses

he prolly had some problems. Its like saying GTA makes people shoot others...

I have the game, and no matter how much I play it, (which is not much at all), I can't get addicted to it, but there is no denying the game is an absolute masterpiece.

I don't agree with a lot of what is said here. Objectively speaking, it's NOT crack, it's NOT going to ruin your life, you CAN play it while being pre-med. It's all about MODERATION people.

Alcohol is bad. Drink it in moderation it's perfectly fine, get addicted to it, and you have serious problems. Same goes for EVERYTHING in life.

If you do get SERIOUSLY addicted to WoW, you are going in a downward spiral. You better catch yourself before you ruin your life - and yes it can ruin your life if you don't do it in moderation.

You have to get around your little nonsense stigma you attach to games like WoW just bc other irresponsible people ruin their lives on it.

I play WoW casually. It is possible you just need to learn how to manage your time wisely. Actually, if you can manage the two now I'm assuming learning that skill would help in med school when you are just going to be even more crunched for time.

Hahahaha I play WoW casually as well. It is possible to play and still be premed. I honestly don't get how people can get so hooked onto it, I personally find it actually hard to play so often. Premedmind nailed it.
I also have a friend who is an electrical engineering major at Berkeley and this guy plays like a madman.

I think you're talking about the case of Megan Meier. She indeed had a history of depression before killing herself after a cruel myspace hoax perpetrated by an adult. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Story?id=3882520&page=1

I disagree with this. I played these games back in middle school/early high school, before I had a car (anyone remember Everquest?). The games are not desigend to be played casually, they are desigend to be played for at least 20 hours a week. Even if you do have the will power to do it moderation I feel like you'd just be doing it to prove a point, since I can't see it being fun in moderation. You mentioned how alcohol is bad, but reasonalbe in moderation. Well the same is true of opiates. The reason we allow alcohol use and not opiate use is that we understand that some drugs are likely to be used in moderation for use in moderation, and some are likely to lead to addictions.

Stick with FPS games like battlefield or Halo for the short study breaks. Stick with friends and real life for those rare longer study breaks.

Call of Duty ftw 👍

It surely is possible. One of my close friends in med school played WoW throughout undergrad and still plays during med school (although she enforces "Breaks" during exam weeks now). It's all about what you choose to do with your free time, and if WoW is your thing, sure do that then instead of watching football on TV or going out to drink.

I'm playing right now. And to be realistic, you cannot play the game casually. I quit when WoW when school starts.

*queue WoW commercial*

Hi, I'm TheRealMD and I'm a former WoW addict.

WHAT'S YOUR GAME?

😛

I feel like I am addicted to Halo, so go ahead and play it. HAVE FUN!

I completely agree it's not designed to be played casually. If it was, how would they make money on monthly subscriptions? Hello??

But my character is beyond those griding stages and I'll do a battleground every now and then to get the PvP gear. So for me, it's casual play, and it's still fun. I don't play during school at all though.

Call of duty 4 is a nice study break game, so is battlefield and halo. But IMO doing anything outside is better than gaming inside. You don't develop yourself as a person sitting in a room playing games.

True true, going out is much better than staying in, but playing games is a good alternative for those who have no cars or money. Especially when the buses never come around.

You can certainly play WoW casually. I usually play on the weekends when I don't have a bunch of h-work, but since it's break I play more. People who have no self-control can easily get addicted and do nothing else, but that goes for anything. It's like saying "Don't start reading Terry Goodkind books because you'll get addicted and not want to stop reading! (which is true) So what? It's just entertainment as long as you don't go overboard and neglect your h-work/family/friends etc. Speaking of this, I'm about to go casually play my Blood Elf Paladin, have a good night!

The thing about playing an MMO casually is that you will suck. Don't deny it - you are significantly poorer and more mal-equipped than the hardcore gamer that routinely pullers all nighters 2-3 days a week. You may have some talent, but you don't have the time that is required to raid every day and achieve server/world-first accomplishments. But if the casual existence is enough for you, then that's no problem.

I used to play an MMO and I've substituted some more social and healthy hobbies in its stead. There is, however, this rather scary urge to go back to the old lifestyle.

I play a game that is sort of similar I suppose. It's called EverQuest 2. I only play it during extended breaks during or after semesters. In my personal experience, if I play it over the weekend, it's hard for me to get back into the studying groove that I was in during the week. So I tend to lay off the MMO's during the semester. If you can play it and keep a high gpa then hey, go for it (you wont get burned out from school as easy)!

Just my two cents..

I know people who've lost jobs over WoW...

My brother is addicted.. does nothing but WoW... in fact my parents have had to unplug the monitor for him to get off of it..

So if you have restraint go for it.. but be warned..

I think you should try Rock Band. If you make it a rule that you can only play when you get four people together, there is probably less of a chance that you'll get addicted.

It's a really fun game!

My advice to you, "Stay far away from any computer game! They suck your life away! I am serious."

Haha, a guy at my school was hardcore into WoW until he saw that South Park episode...hit pretty close to home. He still plays way too much IMO, but he has toned it down a lot.

Oh, and his grades haven't seemed to suffer from it...but he has sacrificed any chances of getting laid during college because all of his social interactions are with other WoW players online.

The ironic thing is that my friend got laid after he started playing WoW. He wasn't even trying, either, because he was always talking to his WoW team.

That South Park episode sure was funny though. Best episode ever.

I too heard that the game was very addicting...I played it, and at first was hooked. But after a while it got old and quite boring. I got my warrior up to lvl 70 though. It's probably more fun if you have a head set and are in a good guild. But, like most things, it all depends on the person and how much of an addictive personality one has.

I can see it now.....

WoW student stumbles into class 5 minutes late after a professor starts lecture.
Another student turns to him and whispers: "Dude, you look like you've been up all night."
WoW student: "I know, my guild kept me up all night, we were raiding Blackrock Depths."
Other student: "Hey, lean close, I gotta tell you something."
WoW student leans in close.
*SLAP*

Yeah that episode was hilarious. An episode this season basically made fun of Guitar Hero in the same way, and it was funny too...not quite up there with the WoW episode though.

Good thing you mentioned that because it ends up that I'm missing that particular episode, which is why it didn't sound familiar.

It's still a must see...there's a hilarious "Heroin Hero" storyline, and the very end of the episode is priceless.

i dont get it.....THE GAME ISNT EVEN FUN! its like people that play SIMS for hours at a time. "check this out! this is so cool. i get to watch this family live a normal life on a computer!! and i can make them do whatever i want" i will never understand. someone please help me explain the appeal of either of these games

Yeah, watching Cartman projectile **** all over his mom's face was enough to turn me away from the game all together.

You know what I am proud of? I sold my account before Burning Crusade came out and got back exactly what I paid for it (including a 6 months subscription). That means I broke even! Weeee!

I actually want to sell my account too but I'm afraid it isn't hardcore enough. Do people buy decent accounts?

I say before BC for a reason. It was lvl 60 (not geared though), but it has around 700g. Back then 1000g was like $80 I think, and I sold me account for $120.

It's really interesting though to see a lot of economics working in WoW... Perfect example of supply and demand. 👍

Gold is worth less and if your char isn't 70, it probably won't fetch that much, if anything.

No...Ahhhh... there is no playing WOW 'casually'. My husband recently started and went without tending to his higene for lets say... 48hrs. Enough for me to let him sleep on the sofa. Guild wars is no better than that. Say goodbye to a social life, love life, and goodbye to your toothbrush:laugh: You'll be speaking in terms of 'how many gold' it would take to buy... a saber tooth tiger...I dont know. If you havent already started now is the time to stop! --good luck

Haha...have you guys caught all the WoW based commercials on TV recently? I think my favorite one is the one with Mr. T.

And I second the Rock Band nomination! It's an awesome game, especially if you are at all inclined towards rhythm games (or drunk karaoke).

personally, I just play a lot of handheld games on my DS. Favorite so far I think is Phantom Hourglass.

I could never get into WoW. The character customization freakin' blows and CoH has completely spoiled me for that. I was bored in character creation.

As such, the only MMO I play is City of Heroes/Villains. Love that game, but my fiance and I don't play as much as we used to. EQ2 we play only a little, but we don't keep our accounts active. We just start them up about twice a year when we get in the mood to play a high fantasy MMO.

WoW is not crack, but it is very fun. You just need to go in knowing that you are playing for part-time fun and enjoy the game without needing to be the biggest badass around.

If you're the guy who wants to reach the highest-level, have the coolest toys in the game, and reach the end of the end, then don't get involved. That goal is only reached by playing ALL THE TIME, and even then you will need lots of help from other players. This approach is completely inconsistent with productive membership in society, nevermind premed classes. (As a corollary, if you go that route you will soon come to the sad realization that your level-70 pals with unbelievable stats and gold are actually 13 years old.)

As premedmind said, the game is a masterpiece. There are plenty of really fun things to do (exploring areas, trying out different character classes, reaching early levels). It is big enough, with enough other players of different interests and levels, that you can play forever without getting sucked into the truly time-intensive content. I never grouped with anyone else (because then I wouldn't be able to leave when I wanted) and I never had a problem finding fun stuff to do. It *is* tough to play for just an hour, but it's possible, and the promise of a longer session (once that orgo problem set is finished) is a great motivator.

I played throughout premed studies (though I took a hiatus for the month before the MCAT) and was fine. So if you go in knowing what you're there for, set limits, and enjoy yourself, you'll be fine.

I would advise against MMORPGs for anyone who's really serious about doing well in school but gets easily addicted and distracted from their studies. I played one in high school, and it became really difficult for me to contain the amount of time that I spent in game, especially once I was at high levels and wanted to raid dungeons into wee hours of the night ("it's 5am and the raid's not over, but I can't leave now or I won't be able to shoot for any of the uber loot that's being dropped!"). There are lots of other games that you can press *save* and come back to it when you're actually supposed to be awake (<3 rockband).

I specifically never picked up WoW during my undergrad years. I knew I'd get in trouble with it. However, since I graduated my wife and I have both played it and enjoyed the atmosphere of the game. When I start school this August it'll go on the back burner again.

I spent any gaming time I had playing FPS during school.

I played hardcore for a while. It was good. Then I ebayed my 60 sham before BC was announced for a few hundred dollars. Worked out nicely. I definitely could not pick it up again though without it seriously affecting my life.
