Any pre-vets that never owned a pet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I only had a some fish, couple of hamsters and a guinea pig (all at different times.)
I finally got a cat about 1 1/2 yrs ago. But other than that...no dogs/farm animals/etc.

Me, aside from fish.

Mom is allergic to/scared of furry animals.

If you don't mind my asking, what made you guys realize you wanted to be vets, since it doesn't sound like you were around animals a lot?

Oh goodness, I can't imagine being without a pet in the house at any given time, let alone ever! I go over to friend's houses where no pets are allowed, not even fish, and it feels so odd to me.

I'm used to the dog rustling things around, the cat scratching on something, the bird talking away. I'd feel so alone. 🙁

I had a lot of insect "pets" as a kid haha. Moths, butterflies, ants, crickets, grasshoppers etc..whatever I could catch. Finding a butterfly that couldn't fly on my windowsill and then subsequently nursing it back to health before releasing it after 2 weeks sealed the deal for me when I was 8.

Ditto!

I grew up having animals all around me. My childhood was full of farm animals. When I moved to the city, I replaced cows and horses with dogs and cats (and a ferret, 2 hamsters, and about a dozen birds). It'd be so lonely without animals. D:

I never owned pets growing up. My parents didnt have time and didnt trust us to be responsible enough to take care of them. I got my first pet, a hamster, in undergrad. Always liked animals though, and fell in love when I got my own dog.

I too did not grow up with any pets...mainly because we lived in an apartment but I always would look out my window for neighborhood kitties and they would "follow" me home if you add all the kitties that followed me home I had 7 kitties....point is we are naturally drawn into the field...

Oh and in addition I'm actually going into equine and never even came close to handling a horse until undergrad...

I got my first pet at 16, and he's possibly the devil in a really cute, fluffy sweater...but I still love him. Even though my dad convulsed at the thought of pet hair in the house, I had neighbors who had animals...whose houses I probably spent way too much time at...and relatives who had pets. I wasn't the kid who always knew I wanted to be a vet, but looking back...the bond that I shared with animals that didn't even belond to me was way too strong for me to have ended up in some other field.

Never had a dog or a cat growing up (HUGE source of arguments with my parents). We did have a few fish/hermit crabs though, and I had a guinea pig for 7.5 years. I leased a few horses, but never owned one (although I will lay claim to my fattie).

I am super excited to have pets when I graduate! The major item I should have considered when choosing a college was the "must live in pet-free dorms" for all years attended. Ick. I have a Betta, but seriously pet-deprived.

I would LOVE a huge burly running dog, but I'm not sure how well that will work out in vet school. I don't think it would be sensible for me to rent a house with a garden for him to run & not fair to be gone for so long. I suppose I have plenty of time to decide though! (... need to apply & get accepted to vet school!)

iIf having a lizard I caught for a few days counts as a pet lol. other than that I haven't had a pet before but I have helped take care of a few dogs for family friends a great number of times.

That would have been my excuse to sneak in a reptile. "Hi Mom! You're allergic to cats and afraid of dogs, so I got a boa!" 😀

Bahahaha! Thanks for making me laugh out loud in the middle of a gross anatomy lecture. (Guess that's what I get for not paying more attention in class)
