I am a senior in highschool, and I will be attending Purdue next fall. I was wondering if someone could give me a little more insight toward the program. The information I have is very vague, and I am very scared :scared: .

I just got accepted to Purdue as well for prepharmacy - fall of 2007. I don't know yet if that's where I'm going though... 😀

PS: I'm very scared too!

I graduated from purdue in 02 with a BS, and now im going back an applying next year for the pharmacy program. If you have any questions i can help. I think the avg. gpa for last year was a 3.6. Also, its alot harder to get into the professional program at purdue since they dont accept any pcat scores. That means that you have to have exceptional leadership, volunteer, grades, work experience, etc. to get in. I think the class size is around 160 - 180 and they get around 1100 applications each year.

If you have any specific questions let me know.

I really enjoy the large campus atmosphere, but I really would like to know what I need to do in pre-pharm to get accepted for my last 4 years. Is it really as bad as they say? I am definetly going to Purdue (I have had my eye on a PharmD from there, since like 7th grade), so nothing you say will change my mind, but I would like to know what exactly I am getting myself into. What can I do to boost my chances over the next 2 years? (I have been working as a tech for Walgreens since I was 16, if that helps any)

What do people say? Is it bad?...Is it hard?... It depends on the person. How good are you with chem, and bio classes?

I spoke with the head of admissions twice, once in person, once on the phone. What he told me was the most valuable information. Even though the avg. gpa is around 3.7, dosent mean that you need the 3.7... but it helps. He told me that grades are important, but the MOST important thing about getting into thier professional program is to show the ad committee that this is truly what you want to do with your life and this is your passion to become a pharmacist. Along with working, which is probally the most important, do some volunteer work, and join many clubs at purdue.

All of these and you leadership abilities will be looked upon greatly. But it sounds like you are determined, and if you are, you will have a great chance. Im applying next year, and I took most of the prereqs, just 3 classes left to take. (i have a BS so some of me prereqs were taken care of in my last major). If you have any questions about the classes for prereqs, about the school or anything else, let me know. I went to Lafayette for my BS, and will hopefully be going back again. (im at one of purdues satellite schools now)

good luck.

Purdue has something other than engineering... ?

😛

Well, if I come up with any other questions, or I just get a little jittery, I'll let you know. Thanks!! 🙂

Umm...I came up with a few questions that I am really confused about!! Purdue is sending me stuff about my ID, and on the list of things to do with it, it says that some programs require you to test into a math course. Does it matter if I have already taken Calculus? or will I still have to test into it? Is it even required? What types of classes should I be looking forward to next year? And was it wise to choose a 2+4 school over a 0+6?

Yeah, I'm a freshman right now here at Purdue in Pre-Pharmacy. Personally, I think it's difficult, but not impossible. My best advice is to start now, take all the AP courses you can now. Do whatever you can to make next year any easier. Good luck.

-Josh

Unless it has changed, you will have to test into the math. When i went for my first degree (Computer Science) I had to test into the math, even though i already took it in high school. The test was pretty hard for me, and i ended up having to take pre-calc at purdue, which sucked since it didnt count as credit toward my major.

for the curriculum, go here

The freshmen year is alot easier than the second year, especially the last semester, Micro with A&P2, and Org 2 and 2 electives is a tremendous amount of work. Im finishing micro 221 right now, and i think it is pretty hard. In 101/102 i thought was a breeze, but this class....

Yes, if your good in chem and bio, this was a good choice. It is pretty hard to get into Purdue's professional program, but if you have good grades, you should be fine.

Also, by doing the 2+4 @ purdue, compared to butlers 0 +6, you will be saving alot on student loans. Purdue = 14000 / yr.. Butler = 34000 / Yr (assuming your in-state)

Purdue and Butler always have strife, I just don't understand it!!! To each his own! No matter what school you go to, wheher in Indiana or another state, there should be a reason you decided to apply to and attend that school. I really love Butler and if I were to do it all over again I would come here again in a heartbeat. For me, there is more to the school I choose to attend than a sticker price.

Yeah, I definitely would have gone to Butler had it not been for the tuition. 😱 But oh well, I guess I'll just have to work hard at PU....

Actually, it really took me awhile to pick between the 2 schools. (A pharmacist I work with actually convinced me Butler was better, but then the other pharmacist I work with convinced me Purdue was better) I have been looking forward to Pharmacy school at Purdue FOREVER (lots of emphasis on "forever"), I just want to know how hard I am going to have to work my butt off. But all in all, I believe I did make the right choice!!😀 But tell me this: Is it going to be fun?

But tell me this: Is it going to be fun?

    Studying on the weekends while your friends are out partying or having a good time, trying to explain to your girlfriend why you can't spend as much time with her as you like, family forgetting you exist. Or my personal favorite, a facebook called 'I Cry Myself To Sleep at Night Because I'm a Pharmacy Student'. Yeah......definitely what I'd call fun....

Haha! Way to encourage incoming freshmen like myself. 🙂

Thanks for the encouraging feedback. I was looking for some encouraging "Yay! Go pharmacy at Purdue!" but you had to douse my hopes....(j/k). I don't know. I guess I feel kinda bi-polar in a sense. One day I'm like "Dude, I totally made the right decision!" and then the next I'm like "Am I sure?". It is really weird, and I feel as if I am the only one doing this. I guess we'll find out if I did make the right decision next year, won't we?

P.S. One2Three, are you going to Purdue next year?

I haven't made up my mind yet. But it's definitely among these 4: Toledo, Cincinnati, Purdue or Butler! =D

If you have the money, hands down, I'd go with Butler. They have an automatic acceptance into Pharmacy school as long as you maintain a 3.0 if I remember right.

Yes, Butler is what I'm leaning towards! The only problem is I don't know if they will accept me or not yet (I think the admission-decisions aren't sent out until Dec 20th).

What about Ohio State? 🙁

I went to a college visit there and I don't know... for some reason I couldn't really see myself going there. Must be a Michigan Wolverines thing. Haha, kidding. But I dunno.

I must be extremely weird or something, because my friend, who is also is going to pre-pharm next year applied to 4 schools or so, and I only got out 2 applications. (I started several...Ohio State was on the list.) I didn't pick Butler because:
A. Money, Money, Money
B. I know a lot of people who went there, and (not to step on anyone's toes) I heard it was much easier than Purdue, and I don't think that I want it to be that easy...(Although, it would be a plus)
C. I grew up really close to Purdue
D. I have it out against the Pharmacist I know really well who went there....Let's just say, I like to get even.😎

I think Butler has already started sending out our letters. I would watch. We should be getting our answers soon.

So you applied there, too, huh? That's cool. If I don't get into Butler, I'm most likely picking Purdue over Cincinnati or Toledo. Although my dad really wants me to go to Cincinnati.

Four years ago, gosh that seems like a long time, when I applied to Purdue, Butler, Drake, UIC, and Madison I too was looking at the cost associated with each choice. When it came down to it, Butler was very competitive in terms of the financial aid they offered as compared to some of the larger public institutions like Purdue and Madison (out-of-state student for both). I don't blame people for having sticker shock, but I would also suggest that you not simply choose a school based on the tuition. Remember, this is an investment in your future, choose wisely! If anyone has any questions regarding Butler, feel free to pm me, I would be more than happy to answer your questions.

P.S. there has always been a bit of a quarrel between Butler and Purdue in terms of which school is better. Honestly, we all take the same exam when we graduate and we all have the same initials after our names so I would take what you hear from people with a grain of salt.

I think I made the right decision. I was on campus just yesterday (my cousin lives really close), and I realized why I really chose Purdue over Butler. I really feel as if I fit in there! Do you think you'll get into Butler? I am leaning toward "yes" for myself, but you never know. I keep checking my mail everyday(my mom is getting annoyed, "You're already going to Purdue...."). Good Luck!! You have to let me know!!

I really shouldn't have gotten cocky....Butler didn't accept me. My ego is really bruised. I don't even know why they didn't! I have pharmacy experience, my GPA could use some work, but a 3.4 isn't that bad, right? I have taken 3 years of Bio, 2 years of chem, 1 year of physics, and 5 years of math, ALL in 4 years!!! I just don't understand!!😕 They sent me a letter pretty much telling me in a nice way "You suck, and we don't want you here." I really need to vent. Its not as if I really care, but I can't stand to have my ego bruised! It just irks me!!😡

P.S. I hope you had a good Christmas!!

Happy Holidays!

Hey we're on the same boat! Except maybe I'm not as "ego-bruised" haha, I actually went on a campus tour at Butler and the weather was horrible so I guess I didn't really see the good side of the school while I was there so I'd already decided that the school probably wasn't for me. I guess I was right.

My choices are narrowed down to CINCINNATI or PURDUE... someone help me decide. 😀 SOmeone else do it for me... haha.

I am currently in my second year of pre-pharmacy at purdue. If there is one thing I have learned here it's the chemistry department here hates students. The chemistry department at Purdue wants you dead. That being said, you'll need to realize that you are in some weed out courses with those darn engineers. Welcome to hell =).

haha, yes good old Professor Weaver. Are you staying on or off campus?

right now i'm off campus.. next year i'll be on campus

Bemeren and Josh, if you don't mind, could you share your high school stats before going into Purdue? If not that's okay, "welcome to hell" just kinda scared me a little. 😀

3.9 G.P.A, 1370 SAT.. but it doesn't really matter.. college is a different playing field than high school. It's either your willing to take a couple of hits and keep charging forward, or you'll allow them to kick you while you're down. It all depends on your determination.

Getting into PrePharmacy is a joke. Me and one of my friends were actually having a conversation about this one day on how they accept so many students only to turn the majority of them away. I knew a kid who was in prepharmacy who had a GPA of 2.2, below average SAT scores, but got in because of 'affirmative action'. Anyway, my point is getting into prepharm is the easy part, getting into pharmacy school is another story.

Haha.. affirmative action. But would you personally recommend going to Purdue or 👎 ? Would going to Purdue help my chances of getting into a Pharmacy school, not necessarily Purdue's?

You should join me on "The Road to Hell" at Purdue. I really hope I do well, because if I can't make it, what am I going to do? We could be study buddies 😀 . One2Three, what are you stats now? Mine are okay. 3.4 GPA 1650 SAT, 27 out of 79 (Class Rank). God, I really do suck.....

It's up to you. Personally, if I had know about the 0-6 Pharrmacy schools, I would have applied there instead, takes of the stress of having to apply to a pharmacy school and take the chance of not getting in. But do what you want, in the end, its your choice. If you want Purdue go for it, if not, their are plenty of other options.

First year Prepharm isn't that bad, the hardest classes from what I've heard are 2nd year: Microbio, Anatomy, and Organic Chem. First year is just basics.

Well, at least the first year will be some-what of a review. I really love Chemistry (I know, I am totally a nerd.), but Biology...that is different. So pretty much 2nd year pre-pharm is going to suck?

Ha, yeah, I guess that's one way of looking at, but like you said, you sound somewhat like a 'nerd' so I think you'll do fine in both years. good luck.

Haha, yes! Study buddies... meaning you tutoring me. 😀 I have yet to go to a campus tour at Purdue on the 20th, so I can finally decide if I want to go there. My stats are 3.8 GPA, 1600 SAT (out of 2400!!), 23 ACT... grr. 29 out of 430 class rank. I like Chemistry as well.. but like you, Biology is just NOT working for me.

Well, when you take your tour, don't let the lack of snow🙁 , the coldness, or everyone being sick prevent your visit from being enjoyable. I'm sure, being from Ohio, you have an idea as to what the weather is like. It's not pretty this time of year, but it gets a little better as the year progresses. Then again, I like snow and want to move to Wisconsin👍 (my parents don't feel the same way, of course👎 ). But yeah, I could totally do the study buddy thing, but it would be a give-give situation. You tutor me, I'll tutor you.🙂 If you can do Calculus🙂mad: ,😕 ), that would be even better....😀

I was just in Indy last week.. I'm pretty sure the weather is pretty much the same in Indiana and Ohio. No snow here either, it's weird. No white Christmas in 2006! I used to like snow, when I didn't drive. 😀 That tutoring idea sounds great to me, I hope I end up liking Purdue after my visit. Hehe. Calculus? Yeah.. I'm not even in Calc, I'm in Pre-calc... sadly.

Oh well, No Calculus....I'll get over it eventually.🙁 Have fun on your tour! It really shouldn't be too bad. The weather could be worse.

Calculus (for Pharmacy students) is pretty easy here at PU. I only took PreCal in HS and still ended up with a B in the class.

Has anyone who's applying this year heard any news from Purdue yet? Does anyone know if Purdue has to receive our Fall 2006 grades 1st in order to be invited to an interview?

I really hate Calc this year. It pretty much sucks. Of course, math was really never my favorite. Why I'm on the advanced track, I'll never know.... It's good to know it should be somewhat easy.

Josh, how was your first semester?

First semseter went pretty well. A's and a few B's. I think my overall GPA was around 3.5? If you end up coming to PU, let me know. I've saved all my old exams/notes.

So I just went on my campus tour today. The tour guide didn't really show us a lot of the school, I was hoping to see the Rec center or the dorms, but no.

So I am not sure what to do.
Cincinnati or Purdue. Purdue or Cincinnati.
I know Cincinnati will be a lot cheaper.
But Purdue is more challenging, I think.
Yeah.. I don't know what to do, which one to pick. =(
I just want to go to the one that will get me into a pharmacy school! Haha.

Comments, suggestions, complaints? 😀
