Hi again everybody,

If nobody knows, I'm in a LDR to someone in Australia. I'm looking at school schedules and most seem to have a one month break at best for the entire year. Do you have any recommendations for schools with lengthy breaks or more than one 1 month breaks (maybe summer and winter)? Also, what's the policy in regards to taking a year off during dental school? If I can, what year would be the best to take a gap in?

I know I might get loads of flack for this, but I just want to know all of my options and their pros and cons before committing to a school for 4 years.

Most schools longest break will be the summer between DS1 and DS2. This can vary between one month to a little over 2 months. Other than that first summer, most schools do not have breaks much longer than 2 weeks (including summers). If you don't have a very, very good reason for taking a year off (visiting your significant other is not one) you will not be taking a year off. This policy is quite reasonable as the school would be losing a ton of money for that lost spot. I'm not familiar with the schools with the longest first summer, but hope the rest helps.

DS is pretty much a relationship. A very demanding one at that. As far as I know, DS wont have very long breaks during the 4 years. Taking a year off during DS is completely out of the question. Im not even sure they'll give you that option for a death in the family.

My advice is the sort out your priorities. Relationships or career?

I see, that helps a lot. I'll be on the lookout for those two monthers, thank you! For those two week breaks, will there be more than one per year?

Relationship (singular). I've been contemplating about that and I honestly can't say. I value both equally, and I'm of the mindset that there's more than one fulfilling job out there. It's just that dentistry is the one that interested me first and that I've invested a lot of my time, money, and effort into this goal. I can also say the same for my relationship in terms of time, money, and effort.
