As the cycle continues and I pry deeper and deeper into the bowels of the "Osteopathic School Specific" forum, I'm finding that I wish I would've applied to a few schools that I overlooked back in September. Notably, I really wish I had applied to CUSOM. There isn't any reason why I didn't apply to the program, but I overlooked it when I originally applied. If you could go back in time, are there any programs you wish you applied to? Is there any reason why you didn't apply?

I regret not applying to BCOM.. My reasoning was not wanting to take out private loans

No specific programs I wish I would have added, but if I could change anything, I wish I would have submitted earlier.

Would have prewritten more so secondaries could be less stressful and could go out sooner. Besides that, I actually felt like I overshot my prep due to neuroticism...

I would have not panicked and applied to 7 more DO schools in early Oct (going from 14 to 21).
I interviewed at 2 schools (Aug, Sept) and was waiting for decisions in early Oct, which were rejection and waitlist.

I applied to 13 DO programs initially in May. Then I added 1 school on June 30th, which I got II mid-Oct, interview late Oct, and accepted early Dec.

Care to elaborate on why you regret not applying to BCOM? I know a few months ago people were treating it like their absolute backup if they didn't get in anywhere else (due to it being the first class, the growing pains that entails, and for profit) but now you're the 3rd or 4th person I've seen that did/would've chosen BCOM over other schools if given the choice

Well, if they didn't get into other schools, obviously BCOM would've been better than nothing right? BCOM's class is pretty much full by now, and other schools are also getting full, people are regretting because they haven't gotten accepted anywhere else. I'm not trying to say BCOM is a bad school, but people will obviously regret because BCOM does show good promise.

The poster lists himself/herself from Mexico...you can interpret the rest. BCOM has a service mission to help those around the area, and given that he/she is from Mexico, and BCOM is in New Mexico...

I can't really change anything about my application cycle since it was mostly rushed to begin with. My MCAT scores weren't ready until October so I was way behind on completing everything. But if I could I would have applied earlier. I still can't believe how much of a difference this makes. I'm sure I would have had 4 times as many acceptances if I was verified in June. Really, it's crazy how important applying early is when weighed against the rest of your application.

The mexico thing makes sense and the other I was thinking there was more to it because I thought some people were choosing it over other schools. That would be awesome I was just wondering if there was something super interesting about them that you find out in an interview or something that makes BCOM more appealing.

The school is new, and being part of its first class does certainly have some appeal to it. It also has new facilities, so that's a plus. It is no different than CUSOM when it comes to a new school. The average stats for BCOM is also lower than that of other DO schools, as expected for a new school. I suppose many students who haven't gotten acceptances regret not applying there earlier.

I'm still a little wary about them for the reasons you mentioned, mainly the for-profit status and no federal loans for the first two years along with growing pains of a new school. Since the federal government just raised the interest rates, that means private loan interest rates are also going to increase.

Those who chose BCOM over other schools is generally because of either location, cost, and/or the belief that BCOM fits them best.

I regret not applying to PCOM, I sort of under-estimated my application, I rushed to take the old MCAT in January, didnt even study and got a 26, had a high GPA, I filled out about 10 secondaries, got 8 Interview invites, and 6 acceptances (attended 6 interviews), I had no idea I would get this many acceptances, and felt I could have branched out and applied to more established schools such as PCOM, but needless to say I am very content on my school now!

PCOM is somehow very picky and seems also to be regionally biased to applicants from PA and DE. I did not get a II yet even though I have good GPA (3.7) and MCAT (30+) and was completed by end of July. No red flags either.

BCOM is doing some exciting things that applicants are finding very appealing. Research opportunities through NMSU (and research is mandatory for graduation), anatomy taught through medical imaging rather than cadavers, massive sim lab, equal emphasis on primary care and specialties, and it was recently announced that there will be DO-MBA and DO-MPH options. A number of people are also very drawn to strong mission of the school and like how that mission is being integrated in the curriculum.

not having an actual cadaver is a bad thing. As much as I absolutely hate hate hated lab I found it necessary to have my hands on the body to get spacial arrangement of the structures.

Edit: well for at least anyone that wants to be a cutter

The cadavers are not part of the core anatomy curriculum, but they can be done as an elective during rotations if you REALLY want to do the cutting. If you talk to surgeons, they'll tell you that everything they use they learned during residency, not by cutting up a cadaver. Personally, I think learning to read medical imaging is more useful than dissecting a cadaver.

For me.....my regrets reside during my undergrad career. I have a passion for breakdancing and went to compete in a few national competitions. Spent 3-6 hours practicing daily. Also, I was wayyy into my looks. Spent an 30mins- 1 hour on doing my hair every day. Bright white smile and dressed to impress. I got popular and was known as the "pretty boy". Partied 3 times a week.....Hung out with hot chicks that only valued their looks but knew how to have a great time partying/clubbing/dancing. I had a part time job throughout my undergrad and took 17-18 credit hours every quarter. With all of this.....I was a B student. Graduated with 9-Cs on my transcript. My adviser asked me if I had a plan B........No, I only have a plan A--to get into medical school. I wish I would have managed my time better as an undergrad.

Then the pressure and stress from family.....

The father who reminds you how useless you are.
The sisters who tells you need to get your life together
The mother you love to death......is disappointed and compares you to all the other kids who are doing better. The " Why can you be like him/her? Oh because you're having too much fun and chasing girls!"
The brother.......wait I dont have one. lol

Then......I thought to myself...... what if I stop chasing pretty chicks, dancing, ignore my looks, and limit my partying time? I could use all of that time to study :bang: Whelp, I did just that.

I went back to school to obtain another degree (B.S. Chem). Spent the following 2 summers prepping for the MCAT (old version)..... Studied 8-12 hours daily (because im stupid), at the school library staring at a blank white wall away from pretty faces and distractions. I went from having a life to no social life..... Lost 3 beautiful girlfriends in the process too......literally FML.

Even to this day, I tell myself..... I wasted so much time.

Pros- Rotations all at ACGME residency affiliated hospitals, 300 residency spots created with a goal of 600 by 2020 across specialties and primary, research facilities of a major state uni, NMSU campus life, largest sim lab in nation.

Cons- no fed loans for first 2 (4?) years, new and unproven

As for the thread, I regret not applying to Marian, and SOMA my local school

The residencies created is at 108, it has increased its goal from 300 to 600 (which is crazy fast). I didn't even realize that University Medical Center (one of the rotation sites of BCOM) was the place that Texas Tech has it's residencies in.

Dissecting cadavers is not surgery training, scraping fat from a dead, dehydrated, embalmed body has nothing to do with the techniques necessary for surgery.

Our entire group of anatomy professors were surgeons, they were very adamant about this.

I would've ignored my pre-med advisor and applied to DO schools initially, instead of putting myself a few years behind schedule.

Haha, at least you had the chance to be with 3 beautiful girlfriends, AND had the reputation of pretty boy. That's pretty impressive!

Was not saying that techniques nor anything about surgery was learned but I am familiar with a body spatially that just reading a book and looking at An atlas doesn't achieve

Yeah, you can get that from a good prosection too. Usually more efficiently.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with dissecting, and if you liked it then more power to you, but dissecting isn't necessarily advantageous for someone going into surgery (at least not according to my professors). And you can learn anatomy just as well from a prosecuted cadaver.

I 100% agree about prosected. I wish mine was that way I think cadaver lab itself is a huge time dump (clearing fat like you said) but the way I read it BCOM doesn't have any cadavers prosected or not just electronic program

Yikes, yeah that wouldn't be cool.

When did you submit?

It took 2 weeks for my transcripts to arrive to aacomas in late August, by the time they arrived it was mid sept. I submitted my app mid September, was verified mid October and received secondaries mid October through mid November. I pre wrote the secondaries before I got them... But overall my timeline was later than I would have preferred.

Brand new facilities, largest sim lab in the nation, a ton of ACGME residency sites, amazing staff, all instructors are required to practice clinical medicine in order to keep their jobs as instructors, mandatory research is an amazing feature IMO, low cost of living, emphasis on specialty training, mission driven, inaugural class, etc.

Increased government loans has no correlation to increased private loans, sometimes private loans are more beneficial than government loans. Just some food for thought.

BCOM has prosecuted cadavers that are available by using an elective during your third or fourth year rotations. You are given a complete month of one on one training with a professional anatomist who walks you through the entire cadaver. Also, BCOM is giving maximum elective opportunities so don't worry if you think if you think it's a wasted elective.

Academic - I had to take the MCAT 3 times....... having to retake is a lost to me, time and my bank.
Physical - I've been in more than +10 fist fights throughout my life. I grew up in a poor/low income black neighborhood, where we get so bored that we end up just fighting to the point of crying. It has taught me a lot about street fighting. The past 3 years, I've been in 3 physical fights and 2 verbal altercations.

The 2 fights: I knocked out 2x jealous guy at the clubs, 2 separate occasions.
a) Jealous Guy 1, taller and a bully, wouldn't stop pushing me against the wall at the club when I told him I didnt want any trouble. He didn't like the fact I was talking to my gf at the time-- the one with a ton of tattoos, underwent 3 plastic surgeries, and has crazy, colorful hair. Well, he learned his lesson. I knocked him out cold and he was kicked out after he regained consciousness. I had a swollen hand for a week.
b) Jealous Guy #2, taller and happened 4 months ago, his girlfriend liked my charisma and made it apparent. Boyfriend didnt like it and ELBOWED me right in the chest. It was painful. My reflexes gave him a bloody mouth and he was kicked out of the club. I was pulled back by a bodyguard, which he saw everything and told me to go to the bathroom to wash my hand. Certain clubs have a service guy in the bathroom who hands you paper towels and soap. The service guy had topical antibiotic and applied it to my battle wounds on my hand.

I was sucker punched once--while I was volunteering and the 40 year old guy was arrested on the spot. I can PM for more details.

You don't know what it's like to attend a new school until you attend a new school. I hope the class ahead of you helps to get the kinks worked out with the faculty and administration.

We're part of the third class at a new-ish osteopathic school, and they're still figuring out how to deal with us. It takes time for any institution to become a well-oiled machine.

I wish I realized early that SDN is highly UNrepresentative of the applicant field, medical students, resident and attending physicians.
good information can be found buts it's far and few inbetween alot of bias and inaccuracy.

You are absolutely right, but I try to gather the most information I can and apply it to gain an understanding. I feel like I can make a pretty good idea out of what I know, but we will see in the near future! Someone has to pave the way for this new school, and I would love nothing more than to be one of those who do it!

That's pretty badass!

that doesn't impress anyone here.

U mad bro?

You are absolutely right, but I try to gather the most information I can and apply it to gain an understanding. I feel like I can make a pretty good idea out of what I know, but we will see in the near future! Someone has to pave the way for this new school, and I would love nothing more than to be one of those who do it!

This attitude is very familiar to me. 🙂 Hope it goes well for you! Someone's gotta do it.

GPA is my only regret. I feel like my EC's are solid bc I knew what I wanted to do since HS so I knew volunteering, shadowing, leadership, etc was all needed. However, I partied a lot in college and managed only straight B's and that has landed me with a 3.2 cGPA. Hoping to raise this GPA to a 3.4 by app time so all is not lost but I also need to crush MCAT. I just want it to be over!
