Any requirements prior shadowing a doc?

I've been told by an undergrad adviser that you need at least Bio and Chem classes completed before you can start shadowing various docs for some experience... How is this info accurate? Is it up to doctors' disretion how much academic experience you've aquired before shadowing, or they never look at it and accept anyone to shadow? Thanks a lot for you help guys!

You probably need to be tested for TB and have hepatitis A& B shots. I've never heard of an academic requirement, so that might be something your school imposes for a shadowing program that they run? You should probably ask your advisor.

I think that your student advisor fed you a plate of BS. I used to shadow physicians when i was in highschool. You dont need any academic experience. Most doctors will tell you that they dont even use most of the premed classes anyways. Id say its 100% up to the doctor but I promise you that if you show enthusiasm and interest thats all that matters.
Even if your school does imposes that requirement I think if you emailed a doctor and then followed up with a phone call most would say yes. (or try a non-university affiliated hospital-duh) -Brian

yeah, like Froze006 said, i think your advisor is making up rules. its quite possible that there are rules for certain university-affiliated doctors at university hospitals, but no one said you had to go to them anyway.

just ask a doctor that you have seen as a patient and liked. more likely than not, they'll be flattered at your interest. i shadowed a surgeon for months and the only "requirements" were to fill out the mandatory patient confidentiality forms. no classes.
