Just curious to see who is at SFSU or starting there in the fall. If your there all ready maybe you can share any advice with everyone else on who to take classes from, etc.

Starting this fall with chem 115 and physics 111/112.

yes, but unofficially. I took O-Chem 333, and both physics segements.

Scota-Koskelo is very good for Phys 111. Phys 121, I had Marzke, I thought he did a great job as well.
I have also taken two graduate courses. I was going to the second semester of O-Chem this summer, but I need a little break. I was feeling burnt out, after all I am working, volunteering, and just took the April MCAT!

Hey,
I just finished up a bunch of classes (mainly to raise my GPA) but I did do some core post-bacc courses and thought that Dr.Sequin was great for the Ochem II lab. She's very enthusiastic. Also, if you take any upper division bio, Dr. Moffat and Dr. Breckler are great teachers. Good luck!

Anyone know much about Fujinari (sp?) for the ochem 334 lab ( I still need to take the lab). I havn't heard great things about him? I'm taking chem 215 this summer and then physics 121 and ochem 335 with the labs in the fall and then I'll be pretty much done for the mcat next april.

He is OK. He is a decent person, but not the best teacher in the world. He ran the lecture, but then I had Dr.Tse for the acutal lab. It was all a joke. They care more about the results you get, then knowing the process. After working in labs for 3 years now, it was frustrating.

Fall 2004 schedule is now available online! Okay, who should I take for chem 115- Vannelli or Michaely? I wonder what happened to DeWitt 😕. I'm taking Koskelo for physics 111. Thanks....

Dewitt is pregnant and having a kid in a couple weeks! As for Vannelli or Michaely, I don't know Vannelli, but when I took 115 from Dewitt this last fall Michaely was teaching 115 also. All I heard were complaints about his teaching and how hard it was to follow what he said. His exams didn't seem to follow what he talked about in class.
Koskello is awesome, do the homework and practice tests and don't miss a class and you'll get an A! The only time you will need the book is for some of the homework problems. You'll only need his lecture notes for the exams.
Good luck!

Thanks. My registration date isn't til July 18. Is it tough for post bacs to get into chem? Thanks again...

I'm researching the local CSUs (Hayward, SFSU & SJSU) in order to complete my prerequisites for vet school.

For those of you in SFSU's program, how do you feel about the quality of the instruction? How about the level of support from faculty? What is the average class size? Are there any career changers here who were social science majors as undergrads?

Anyone in SFSU's pgm be interested in corresponding by e-mail? I have a lot more questions that I feel are best answered by students.

Thank You,
BD

Hi there - Just finished SFSU's post-bacc program. I had mixed feelings about the school, even though I've been successful getting into med school. I've heard better things about Hayward. The classes at SFSU are HUGE. Even my biochem class had over 200 people in it. Microbiology had at least 100 people in it. Labs are impacted, even though we as post-bacc's get priority. Its not berkeley's 800 class size, nor is it Mills' 5-20.

The quality of instruction varies so much I can't generalize here. You'll have to ask about specific teachers - some are good, some are great, some stink. That's where teacherreviews.com comes in handy.

There's factors awork at SFSU in the chemistry and bio departments I didn't appreciate but that could just be an effect of going into science. I was an English Lit. major, switched from a career in marketing to medicine. Had great relationships with all my teachers during undergrad and was very surprised at State to discover that the relationship with science teachers is very very different. I was used to going into office hours, chatting with the teacher about my career goals and classroom performance, and having them get to know me a little bit.

The teachers at SFSU want to talk about the material alone, answer your questions, then its time for you to skee-daddle out their door. Of course, there are some teachers who are quite wonderful, but I very rarely got the idea that most wanted to get to know me. Then again, with huge classes, impending research and so many students groveling for letters of rec, I'm not surprised.

The change in prof's attitudes could be across the board in the sciences and perhaps evident at all the schools you're looking at. I'm still in contact with many of my undergrad profs after ten years but I will NEVER come back to SFSU to visit (other than the student health clinic - they ROCK!! I will come back to visit some educators).

Feel free to PM me and I'd be more than happy to answer your questions.
