Hi!
I am a PGY-1 at an academic IM program who wants to apply for ANY PGY-2 position in Anesthesiology. Do I have a shot?
How would I go about applying for this?
What could I do now that I have graduated from med school to increase my chances?
I am dedicated to getting into even the lowest level Anesthesiology program.
I really appreciate any advice or recommendations.

That's an incredibly hard question to answer.

1) we don't know anything about you other than you want a position and you're a PGY-1 in IM
2) even if we knew your USMLE scores, etc. no one can tell you whether or not you'll get a position. Its no different than the WAMC threads that populate the pre-med forums.

I would suggest checking in the Anesthesia forum for information from those in the field about how to improve your chances and the best route to find open positions.

On further review, your chances might be increased if you decided on what you wanted to get into...I see right below here you've asked about getting a PGY-2 position in Neurology: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=414261

which one is it - Anesthesiology or Neuro?

Oh, by the way, computer was logged in under the wrong username when this post was made. Actually posted by jennyboo.

If you are an average US MD or DO applicant with average USMLE scores and no big red flags or golf handicaps (i.e. failed boards, Caribbean or foreign medical graduate, failed classes in medical school, repeated years, or DO who did not take the USMLE), you would definitely have a very good shot at landing a PGY2 year in anesthesiology.

If you have any of the above red flags (i.e. failed boards, Caribbean or foreign medical graduate, failed classes in medical school, repeated years, or DO who did not take the USMLE) then you may or may not be able to get a residency.

Gear up to apply through the National Residency Match Program this year or whenever you're ready. As you probably know from before, submit your application September 1. A letter from a fairly well respected academic anesthesiologist helps, so if you don't have one, try to do an elective month to get one.

While going through the Match, put some feelers out for out-of-the-match positions. Many anesthesiology residencies have positions reserved for outside the match. You may be able to sign for an out-of-match position, thereby allowing you to start right away instead of waiting a year.
