When it comes to med school admissions, if you ask a question to twenty people, you get fourty answers.

Freaker, are you talking about utmem. I spoke with them before christmas and they said I should interview in January, but I have not heard anything yet either.

Yeah, I'm talking about UT-Memphis. I'm really starting to get worried with them. I submitted my AMCAS in July. I returned their secondary within two weeks of receiving it. I have no idea what's up. I'm a Tennessee resident with numbers that would at least give me some hope I'd get an interview. To this point, nada.

I spoke with a woman on the phone a few days ago who was incredibly curt. Moreorless, "Well, why the heck are you calling us?"

First, I am assuming that you are a UTHSC student.

Second, are you on the admissions committee? How do you know all this?

Third, a lady who receintly served on the UTHSC AdCom told me that interview season wraps in early February, not mid-March. When I told her that I had not heard from the AdCom (secondary returned in mid-October), she started using very dire language. "You must get in contact with the AdCom ASAP." etc.

When it comes to med school admissions, if you ask a question to twenty people, you get fourty answers.

First off I am at UTHSC student. Second, I am not on the admissions committee but I do know people who were interviewed in the first and second week of March last year. Whoever told you that it ended early February probably was just thinking that. Dean Strother himself told me that they continue interviewing until everyone who was offered an interview has been interviewed. I was interviewed February 4th of last year, and I am currently a med student. Feel free to contact Nelson Strother to see what's up, but I do know people who interviewed pretty late. And Nelson Strother himself again told me that he interviews almost everyone he sends a secondary to. Those who don't get interviews are people from a non-bordering state he just noticed or those who don't look good at all after the secondary. You are pretty much chosen based on your AMCAS application.

trinitrotoluene said:
I already sent Strother an email, but he did not respond.

Thank you.

Don't lose hope! I received my letter near the end of January last year; they only give you about a week or two to prepare for your interview.

I certainly think if you get a secondary from UT you should get an interview. When I received my first MCAT score (bad, very bad) I received a secondary only from Meharry, but when my scores from the summer's MCAT (many points higher) were released, I received secondaries from UT and ETSU and was interviewed at both schools.

I was waitlisted at UT until mid July when I received my call, and I was in the mid-50's of the wait list. Dean Strother is a great person to talk to. He scheduled a meeting with me to talk about my application and my chances to get in and was very encouraging to me during my fairly frequent calls to him throughout the summer.

I'll also have to disagree with ravaha08's statement that school is incredibly rough and you will be sleep deprived. Some will and some won't, but it's not a hard fact. I think most of it depends on your level of science background from undergrad. Sure, some people will stay up late studying, but others get plenty of sleep and do just fine.

So in summary, if you want to go to UT, make sure the committee knows it, and don't worry about how hard school will be. Just focus on the present and don't stress out on things you cannot control. From my experience, the hardest thing about med school is getting in.

I Just Got in to UT!!! I interviewed on Jan 3rd and got my letter yesterday!! 😀

Hopefully this means that they are mailing out a new round of interview invites.

And, on a less selfish note, congradulations!

UPDATE: My UT Memphis interview letter arrived yesterday (along with a rejection from Case, two movie rentals, and election info from Sevier County).

I am happy.

Congrats on the interview 👍 I really enjoyed my interview, Nelson does an astounding job making everyone feel at home and comfortable from the moment you walk in the door. When is your interview??

I agree with this statment. At the end of both interviews they basically give you a chance to say why you should goto UT, so when that comes around don't be modest (which was hard for me because I'm not a bragger). During my opportunity I made it distinctly clear that UT was my number 1 choice and gave several reasons why I would be a good fit.

Nashville on Feb 14
Memphis on Feb 16

I am assuming that the Nashville interview will be closed file (a la ETSU) and the other will be open file (I get to exlpain my C+ in genetics).

I think my problem will be making that sell, "You are my #1 choice becuase...," simply because I did so little research prior to appling. I really did not know how to do it. Even better, the interview is before the campus tour--that only compounds my problem. Moreover, I do not even know if I want to do primary or specialized care. (However, I know I do not want to do research.) Jesh!

However, I do have an interview, and that is a start!

Don't worry about getting a C in genetics, I did! The only thing they questioned about my transcript was me withdrawing from physics and taking it over the summer, which was a stupid freshman mistake.

I didn't even take Genetics and I got in. You have a little more experience than I did, even if you got a C.

It's the weekend before exam week. Of course, I am sleep deprived and stressed this week. It's not always like this. It's really not that bad. Most of the time, I do have time to do what I want and need. Just not the week before or of exams.

Which parking lots are the best at UTHSC? I definitely don't want to have to walk very far.
E Lot is nice. 🙂

did anyone have Dr. Suresh Kari for their interview at UT? oh btw, i talked to Diane Harris earlier this week and she said that they are going to interview atleast till the end of feb...

What is the avg wait time from the time the adcoms meet to the time of your notification??
I had my ETSU interview in early Jan. with the adcoms meeting the 31st of Jan.
I just had my interview monday at UT memphis and the adcoms were supposed to meet today.

The waiting is killing me. :scared:

WOOHOO!!!

The Memphonians have finally spilt their love to the eastern foothills!

Translation: I finally got an interview at Memphis!!!!! 👍 😍 😎

Edit: Congrats, Aaron. Gotta feel nice.

Best guess: ETSU prints up the letters on the day after the committee meeting, and mails them the day after that. Then it takes about two days for delivery. Therefore, it should arrive on Friday.

Is it true that ETSU sends acceptance letters by certified mail that require a signature?

for those of you who have been accepted to ut memphis, did you receive any kind of confirmation after sending in your request to hold your place? i sent in my letter and deposit right after christmas and haven't heard anything since....just wondering if they usually send something or not! thanks!

The only choices on our parking form are S, M, G, T, and P

I don't want to walk far to my car, especially at night so I'm thinking M or S would be fine. Are these alright?

Yes, it is true. And it took us a week and a half after the ADCOM met before we got word.

Does that mean they are gonna pay the lease on M? This year was closed for M cuz they didn't pay the lease. I suggest G or S although you won't actually get to choose til you get here. (Maybe not even then.) They put all the first years in crazy lots until they closed down the parking lots we were in.

ezmoney,

I think the ETSU adcoms meet today Jan. 31st not last monday, at least that is what it says on my sheet 😕

You are right.
1. Go to QCOM 's Website and click on the "EVENT CALENDAR" (left hand side).
2. Click on "All Events - Quillen College of Medicine"
3. Go to January 31st and you'll see

Has ETSU updated their website with the newest statistics of who has been accepted/rejected??

I will answer my own question: NO they have not!

I hope to hear from either UT-memphis or ETSU by the end of the week. Is anybody else waiting to hear from both schools?? It is so frustrating knowing that your fate has been decided but you have to wait for a to come letter in the mail. I WISH I COULD JUST CALL AND FIND OUT!!!

Not since Jan. 3rd. I wouldn't look for it until March but it just depends on whether they get time to update it or not.

I feel your pain. I was there in October. My suggestion is to get off SDN and go hang out somewhere. Get your mind on other things! It can really drive you crazy otherwise. Also, remember those "Stats" drop as the process goes on. I saved all the ones from last year and then end up a bit lower by summer, meaning people all accross the board get in before it is all said and done.

Geronimo,

Did you get accepted at UT as well?? If so how long did it take to hear back from them??

For some reason I heard that it is rare for a person to get accepted to both schools!?

I don't think it is rare. 😕 Yes, I did get accepted to both as did several of the people whom I interviewed with at one or the other. I interviewed late October in Memphis and heard back late November. Here is my Profile story if you want to look at it. I put my timeline info at the bottom. Mostly for my parents as they wanted to watch every detail of the process. They were kind of funny through this process. For instance, I wouldn't call them to tell them about an acceptance, I would just post it and wait for the call. It was fun to play with them a little. 😉 It crossed my mind to put "REJECTED" :meanie: on two or three and see what they said. I have a friend who got in a UT Memphis but didn't even get an interview at ETSU. I also know a girl who is friends to one of my friends (a stronger "hearsay" instance) but she got an interview at ETSU (was waitlisted, then accepted) but didn't even get an interview at Memphis. I would say there may not be much rhyme or reason to it. 😕 You never know what happens behind those admissions doors. 🙂 😳

Geronimo,

Congrats on your acceptances. I hope that I will have to choose b/w ETSU and UT. I am surprised you had to wait a month for UT b/c they told us we should hear something by this friday and I had my interview last monday, but I believe you interviewed when the adcoms were still meeting every other Friday rather than every Friday correct??

Is primary care the definite route you would like to take??

Yes, I'm about 98% sure that I'm going to go the Primary Care route. If I get the NHSC scholarship, I'll be a 100% sure since I'll be contractually bound. If that doesn't work out, then I'll keep my options a little more open. We'll see what happens. What about you? Got any idea what you are interested in? UT Memphis really bragged on their Family Medicine program while I was there. I guess they know that is my interest. However, ETSU is ranked in US News and World Report in Primary Care as well as Rural Medicine, so I had to consider that.

Not a 100% sure what I want to do but I was really considering surgery, but for some reason I feel I would also like being a primary care doc as I would be able to actually build and develop relationships with my patients. But first and foremost I have to get in to med school somewhere!!! :scared:

Doesnt it also seem like UT accepts a good percentage of the applicants interviewed because on interview day they gave us the sheet stating that they interviewed 375 last year and the class size was 150 students so wouldnt that mean that they offered some where in the neighborhood of around 250 acceptances??

Ive got to get off this damn website and quit tormenting myself

Yes, you do need to stop the torment. I'd say you have a better shot at UT Memphis given the numbers game. ETSU has the smaller class and thus is more competitive (in terms of sheer numbers). The surgery thing can be a plus either way. ETSU has a residency in Surgery (I believe) but UT's program seems much bigger and broader in scope. Best of luck though! :luck:

futrorthodr,

Don't feel alone, Im in the same situation you are in. I have interviewed at ETSU and am interviewing later this month at UT. It is just a waiting game that you have to play. Good luck anyway.

Thanks for the info about ETSU's adcom date, that makes me feel alittle better.

Supplies? What should I try and find other than a Diagnostic Set and Stethoscope? Also, what sort of specs on these? I've heard get a Welch Allyn Diagnostic Set - Ophthalmoscope & Otoscope and a Littman Cardiology III. What else?

being able to charge/carry a set easily is important and you can often get much better deals through your school.
Like what kind of deals? It would seem that deals would be better this time of year given the influx of "buyers" that come July, August, September. This seems more like "off season." So, would it really be better off to wait. I have no idea, just curious.

Like, would the stuff on this website be a good deal? Or could we get a better deal at the med school?

I did, the interview was very relaxed and stress free. He was a family physician for about 25 years and has a lot of experience. Best advice: Just be yourself 👍

I will be applying to UT this summer and am wondering what their secondary consists of. If anyone has the questions from this year's, I would appreciate a head's up. PM me or leave it on here. Thanks!
