Keeler: http://www.keeler.co.uk/indirect ophthalmoscopes/spectraplus.asp
and
Heine: http://heine.com/index.cfm?section=3&c=37&s=58&p=2014

both offer spectacle mounted BIOs. They seem to be much smaller, lighter, and portable compared to the fully sized head mounted BIOs. Does anyone have one of these and care to comment about it?

I'm tempted to sell my Heine omega 500 and get one of these little guys, but im not sure what exactly would I be sacrificing...

I never liked the spec mounted BIO's mostly because I had trouble keeping them in place. Also if you wear glasses it wasn't comfortable at all. I prefer a head-mount but I'm just one vote.

well I guess no one else has any opinions on this device?

It's all about balance. The spec mounts just don't cut it. Very uncomfortable. I'm also told the view is just not as good, but that might have something to do with the constant need for adjustment.

Personally, I liked the wireless because I feel it has the best balance. It might be heavier in the back, but then it balances the front. However, I actually chose the welsh allen because I couldn't see spending the money for the Heine wireless. And because I had the WA ret. Anyway, I personally love mine.

So the point is you need something that is comfortable for you, whether it is wireless, spec mount, etc. And that money doesn't necessarily matter. As long as you can learn to work well with you get, the differences are negligible.

I have the Heine spec mount BIO and absolutely love it. It is very light weight and comfortable and I get great views with it. I haven't had any problems with it moving/shifting around. Another plus is that I don't have to carry a huge carrying bag around school. I would definitely recommend at least giving it a try if you get a chance.

we weren't allowed to puchase the spec mounted BIOs in school so I have no opinion. I've never used one. since I wear contacts most days I don't think I'll be trying it any time soon.

Also, most places have "regular" BIOs already in office so it would be good to get proficient at those as well.
