Hey,
Narrowing down my list now, and having a real tough time deciding my rank order. I was wondering if anyone had any input (either residents or applicants who interviewed at these programs) to help me out. I am leaning towards CT surgery, but am keeping my mind open during residency to other possible fellowships ( I already know the problems in CT surgery, so no need to respond to that).
University of Rochester: It sounds like a strong program, with great research opportunities, facilities were outstanding. Graduates get great fellowships (not many going into CT though) and go on to hold awesome academic positions. Drawback is the location and weak in CT surgery
Allegheny General: Seems like a very good program. Very strong CT surgery, lots of graduates going into it. Possible 4+3 combined program. Residents seemed very happy, excellent turnout on the interview. Drawbacks, it is a community program, and not many graduates get competitive fellowships like peds, plastics, transplant.
BIDMC: Awesome research opportunities, way ahead of the curve when it comes to technology, MIS, and skills labs. Boston is an awesome city. Graduates basically go wherever they want for fellowships. Drawbacks, I have heard the residents get worked very very hard, possibly malignant (although the residents seemed very happy and were very honest about what goes on there). Also, not very good trauma experience. Not planning on trauma, but i think that a good program should have good trauma exposure.
Boston University: solid program, great trauma exposure. Residents seem very happy and laid back. Facilities are awesome with the new integrated medical center, boston is awesome. Drawbacks, no night float (i think they do alot of Q3) CT surgery not very good.
VCU: solid program, nice and warm in richmond 🙂 Building all kinds of great facilities, flagship VA which is amazing. Not sure about how great the fellowships graduates get are. Sounds like it might be slightly malignant and not 80 hour workweek compliant and residents are trying to hide it.
ANY THOUGHTS ON ANY OF THESE PROGRAMS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I also interviewed at Rush, temple, emory if anyone wants to trade opinions (cant rank them due to couples match reasons)
Thanks!!
