Anybody considering Northwestern or have questions?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Consider the normal curve (the "bell curve") . The mean (average) is determined as is the standard deviation. The mean plus and minus one standard deviation encompasses 67% of the data points (students with a grade). The mean plus and minus two standard deviations encompasses 95% of the data points. So, the 2.5% of students with the lowest scores on the test are labeled as failing. NU has about 170 in the class and thus 3-5 fail (more if the curve is skewed to the left, fewer if it is skewed to the right).

1. If there are no shelf exams, then are the clinical year grades of H/P/F completely subjective?

2. Does less HPME kids mean more spots for other students? 🙂

3. Are the school averages for acceptance listed in the MSAR a good gauge of how you need to do or is is skewed since some of the kids are HPME kids who need to meet lower requirements?

4. With less hours of lecture, how much do people generally study a day (rough estimate since I'd think people might actually have to study more)?

Thanks, like NU a lot and will be applying next year.

Because I'm waitlisted at NU and don't get to attend 2nd look, I feel like I'm missing some info that would allow me to compare NU to other schools...bascially I'm just wondering -compared to other places, how happy are the students in general? Is there a way to characterize the class compared to other schools? And also, how is the teaching? If there are only 2hrs of lecture a day, are students really being taught the sciences, or is the info just presented and students must learn it on their own after class? Are the exams manageable even though they cover such large amounts of information? Thanks!

BUMP!

Anyone know how convenient it would be to commute from Andersonville? How long is the El ride from the Berwyn stop? Thanks.

From experience, the El ride from Berwyn could be anywhere from 20-35 minutes. Don't forget to add in the 10-minute walk from the Chicago stop to the NU campus. As long as you live relatively close to the El stop, the commute wouldn't be too bad.

Andersonville is too far west of the red line, so you'd need a car...and parking downtown is uber-expensive. It's a great neighborhood, though.

Also, for anyone unfamiliar with Chicago public transit, here are two great links to help estimate travel times:
