Anybody currently a student at NYU?

I am interviewing there next Monday (the 28th) and am keeping an open mind about the school despite some of the negative rumors I have heard.

For current students- Do you feel like you are at a disadvantage with such a large class size? Why do they accept so many more students? Anything you wish you had known before accepting your offer from NYU?

Ah, another person spreading rumors from decades ago...

For the record, the drop out and repeat rate combined is 2.7%. Go do some research before you comment next time.

The large class size isn't really an issue. For labs, they break you up into different sections so you're not in lab with all 230 people at once. There will be 115 people per lab section and you'll have a row instructor or two for each row. The student:faculty ratio is actually one of the best in the country... I believe it's 1:6.

The only time you realize the size of the class is during lecture when everyone is together. People tend to like that though because you can get attention if you want it or you can remain anonymous to your professors should you choose to do so (for the most part... there is one professor who learned EVERYONE'S name by the 2nd week of school... ridiculous).

That said... the lectures are often only attended by half the class. All of our lectures are audio and video recorded so a lot of people choose to skip class in favor of watching the lectures on video. Being able to pause, rewind and speed up your professor has its benefits.

There are a lot of rumors about NYU swirling around on SDN, most of which originated some 20 years ago. They may have been true at some time, but are no longer so. As for why they take so many students--Simply because they can... the school treats 230,000 patients a year. There's something to be said about never having to search for a patient...

Why do people care about the drop out rate? Does the drop out rate mean its a hard school? I dont get it. If you want to become a Dentist or what ever, if its in your heart and you have your mind set, you will take the challenges as they come. I think its stupid to look at the drop out rate and I believe they are rumors that are not true. Just my two cents. 🙂

Large class size is not an issue. Lecture auditorium has enough seats for all students. Anatomy lab is split up into groups of 20 with 2-3 instructors and sim lab is split into 120 for morning and afternoon sections. Each row has an instructor.

Recorded video and audio lectures are a big plus. I attend class everyday yet re-listen all lectures the day of.
Lecture powerpoints are posted 1-3 days in advance. No books, we use VitalBook. Some like it, some don't. The professors care about the students and offer study sessions after school. There are many quizzes each week to ensure everyone is caught up.

OK so I went to the NYU Interview and got some things cleared up when talking to the students. They said that the only reason people drop out is because THEY choose to do so or they fail too many classes to stay in- like any other dental school.

The student I spoke with seemed to not mind the large class but DID tell me some interesting things. She told me that your class freshman year starts off with around 250 people and then sometime in the middle of first semester or second semester you get an additional 100 "Advanced Placement" students. These are dentists that have been educated in other countries which must now retake certain classes in order to practice in the US. She said these new students show no respect to the freshman and argue pointless details during lectures.

Another thing I found interesting- I was on my way out of the interview and in the elevator with a dental student. He asked me if NYU was my first choice for dental school and I replied "I am not sure, I'm just keeping an open mind, do you like it here?" His response? "NO!" I found this to be quite surprising. I interviewed at Michigan and everybody (students and staff) seemed to love the school and their classmates. During our tour of the clinic- the students also seemed to heckle us- saying "Don't do it! Get out while you still can, I remember when I used to be happy like you..."

NOT impressed NYU, not impressed.

One of the doctors that I work with went to NYU. He told me that they do kick out some of the students but I didn't really get to ask him why. Is it like the poster above said, do they decide to drop out? or do they get kicked out because they failed many classes? What do you think it is?
It's just a little scary that after you finally get into dental school, you don't get to finish. I'm applying next year, and NYU is definitely one of the schools I wan to apply to.

On the NYUCD website it says the tuition is around 62 grand a year which would work out to 250k total for 4 years in school. Then I look at Predents.com and it claims that amount is under 200k (for out of state).
So, am I missing something or is Predents.com just not accurate here?

we lost 3-4 to transfers (mainly Canadians, and one to Houston)
one AFAIK got kicked out for failing too many classes
one left for personal reasons
Add maybe one or two more because I dont know everyone in the class.
Its less than 10 out of 240-50 starting D1's, not 15% like I see thrown out on these forums.

No its not scary. I would not want a dentist not capable of handling the rigors of dental school working on me. Just because you get in does not mean you belong there, I think it is the same at every dental school. Only those that are capable of learning everything that needs to be learned should go on to become a Dr. of any sort. The school does not come after anyone, if you get kicked out, I have no clue what you were doing with your free time.... It is so easy to pass and get C's.

predents is pretty outdated.

I'm confused... what assumption are you making? Did you actually READ what he said?
