It's not really going to do much for you until you're looking for jobs. It's legit for the professional world, I'd get one and keep it up-to-date in case something sweet may ever come your way. The Dean of my college, the President, most of my professors, various business execs all have LinkedIn pages.

I have a LinkedIn but I wouldn't say that it's particularly useful in getting competitive awards or anything. I use Facebook more, personally.

Yes have it, has been helpful for others I know... My sister in law's job is directly related to her LinkedIn account...

It seems to me, personally, to be geared more toward the business world.

Academia and medicine, I would imagine, already have their own avenues of networking.
