Hello everybody. I just wanted to see if anybody may be able to offer me some ideas or advice. I am an applicant for admission to medical schools in 2012. I have a 35S MCAT score, 3.77 GPA and 3.85 Science GPA. I put myself through school by working graveyard shift as a 911 dispatcher, so I wasn't able to attain much clinical experience during my undergraduate career. I am attaining clinical experience now through shadowing and volunteering in two clinics, but I wasn't able to put that on my AMCAS application. I sent in all of my secondarys about two month ago and also sent update letters talking about the clinical volunteer positions I was participating in. So far I have heard absolutely nothing from most of the schools I applied at (rejected at one and wait listed at 2). I am getting really frustrated and don't know if I should even hold out hope for getting accepted this year. Does anybody have any thoughts?

no clinical experience hurts no matter what.. at least your doing some now.

I guess it now just comes down to the competitiveness of the school. But your suppose to have all this done before you apply.. "apply when your ready"

If you haven't already, consider sending update letters talking about your clinical experiences, especially if they weren't on your primary or secondary applications! Good luck!

If I were in your shoes.... I would prepare as if I would be applying again this coming cycle and at the same time continue to send update letters as time progresses through this current current cycle.

Either way though, I would like to think you're in a pretty fantastic position when considering you have a pretty good application as is. All you need to do is increase some basic EC's which can be done casually throughout this year and worst case scenario you will have an additional year off to work/travel/chillaxe if all doesn't go to plan this time around 🙂

Even if you don't get in this year, look on the bright side. You have excellent stats otherwise. An extra year will give you ample time to work on your EC's.

I sent one update letter when I started to get clinical experience. That letter went out about mid-September. I am thinking about sending another one. Would that look desperate or is that a good idea you think?

Your call. I wouldn't send another unless you feel that something significant has happened in the past month. Two back-to-back letters saying the same thing might indeed look a little desperate, IMHO.
