Does anybody know anything about the Philadelphia programs?

Drexel/MCP
Pennsylvania Hospital
Temple
Thomas Jefferson
Univ of Pennsylvania

Only UPenn has a write-up on scutwork. Previous posts here have said that UPenn and Jeff are the good programs in Philly, and that Drexel isn't. Any info on the others?
Thanks!

Per scutwork, if I remember correctly, Temple only interviewed a handful of people for its spots. I have no idea what that means - perhaps lots of internal candidates or people that signed outside the match...

I would agree that Penn and Jefferson are the two good programs. I had an interview at Jefferson on Monday and had a great time. The faculty and residents are fun and enthusiastic. Unfortunately Jefferson has only 2 spots for next year. Penn is, of course, Penn. I've actually heard a few good things about Drexel, mostly about how approachable the faculty are, but they are still recovering from a financial crises. Temple's program seems to keep to itself. It doesn't have the volume or variety of Jefferson or Penn. Pennsylvania hospital has trouble filling every year. Their variety and volume is limited, but I have heard a rumor (I REPEAT a RUMOR) that Penn may absorb their residency program.

thanks for the info. oh, by the way, yaah - you're the greatest. 😀

jeff2005, jefferson only has 2 spots? that's stinky. FREIDA says they have 5 spots!
according to FREIDA, temple only interviewed 10 candidates for their spots, so I'm guessing yaah's right and they probably hire internally or outside the match or something. i haven't found much on the temple program, except that it's in a not-so-great neighborhood.
regarding drexel, i also heard that because of the recent financial issues, apparently education has become a lesser priority these days.
i know a girl that interviewed at pennsylvania hospital a couple years ago and said the same thing as you did, that their variety is limited.
i'm not going to even get an interview at upenn, so i should probably just concentrate on researching the other 4
😎

There was this guy in Harvard derm (a fellow) from UPenn in say late 90s, 1999-2000 maybe, who used go at breaks from sign out and smoke a pipe (!) wearing the classic elbow bender sportscoat in the alley between Brigham and that food court mall thing (crap forgot the name of it). Philip McKee called him the "pencil sharpener" because thats all he would do.

He was pure pimp, never seen anyone like that since. Anybody know this guy by random chance (good looking white guy, UPenn AP then Harvard Derm)?

Sorry to derail the thread. Maybe if you go to UPenn, you can be like him (I sure did).
😀

I am wondering if I met that guy...the resume sounds vaguely familiar, although I never saw the person I am thinking of with a pipe. I also can't remember his last name, but the first name began with an S.

That's a fantastic nickname for someone though. Pencil sharpener.

Noobin - they probably do have 5 spots but perhaps 3 of them are outside the match, which of course does mean they only have two.

Some of those big cities can be tough to match into in certain years when there happen to be lots of applicants - I think there were a lot of "outsiders" that matched into Boston programs this past year, but sometimes there are fewer.

Drexel/MCP-Hahnemann: Probably the weakest program in Philly. They have major financial concerns and do not have a very good reputation.
Pennsylvania Hospital: Not a bad program. Thay see alot of bone and soft tissue. Its a community hospital program, but they have a solid reputation.
Temple: The poster that said they keep to themselves was not off the mark. They have had some faculty turnover the last few years, but the teaching there is solid.
TJU: Good program with good fellowship opportunities (especially cytopath).
UPENN: Very busy program. People I have known there complain about the busy volume, disorganized structure, and politics of the dept. However, they have the Ivy League "name" and some very well known staff.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Thanks pathdawg! Do you go to school in philly? You seem very knowledgable on the programs there.
What I keep hearing is that Jeff and Penn are universally thought of the two best programs in philly with the other 3 far below.
I did hear that the Drexel program has gotten better since the hospital's financial issues have pretty much resolved. And I also heard that some attendings have recently left Temple and that they are desperately trying to fill those positions right now, so that's getting first priority which is why nobody's residency application is getting looked at. I've been able to find out the least on Pennsylvania Hospital. I heard they see a lot of bone/soft tissue and gyn path apparently...but that their residents feel they have to do a surg path fellowship after residency because of the limited variety. I guess every program has it's pluses and minuses. :scared:
