I am a reapplicant now (this is my second time) and it is looking like I will be waitlisted at three schools. The thought of having to apply 3 times is sickening to think about, but I really don't know what else I would do, medicine is my passion.

So I'm just wondering if anyone else has had to do this, and what the chances of getting in off of one of the three schools waitlists might be?

Come to the Caribbeans with me.

There are people around here that have applied three times and gotten in. I wouldn't count yourself out yet, though, WLs can move pretty good depending on the school.

Aw hang in there hun...I actually know of someone who applied three times. They decided it would be their last time and guess what? They got in!! Best of luck to you...I really hope you get in 😀

Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you get in but if you have to apply a third time, include newly created medical schools to increase your chances of accept.

I believe there is a new school in Pennsylvania (Scraton possibly) and I think Hofstra University plans to accept its first class in 2011.

Goodluck:luck:

I thought I would end up in Caribbeans being an international student and all (and would also have the worst time trying to get a residency, as an noncitizen FMG). I even started dreaming about beautiful coast lines, reggae music and the island vibe...but I got into a US med school

Your MCAT/GPA/ECs?

Sorry to hear about the waitlists. I met a guy at the airport to one of my interviews who was actually a 4th year med student flying out to take his Step 2. He said that he applied three times. The last time he applied, he applied early (which he didn't the previous two times) and to more schools and got 7 acceptances. I think he's doing a DO program in Chicago.

Anyway, he said it wasn't too bad. He worked different jobs and moved to a new city during part of those three years. He was always moving forward and he had a bunch of things going on in his life during the applications, so there was never any timed "wasted".

I hope something works out for you this year, but if not, don't let applying to medical halt other parts of your life.

:luck:

Hey..that's personal information, but if it helps my premed advisor (one mean mother****er) told me I would get in and so did one of my letter writers.

I would say PM me, but I'm fiercely private; you have to convince me.

Edit: apparently SDN censored me. I feel like my right to free speech has been infringed upon

Send in some updates and stay hopeful! I agree that (although waitlists aren't ideal) it's definitely too early to think that it's over.

Thanks, that's good advice, but definitely easier said than done. I've got a job but ever since I started this application process two years ago I can't help but feel like I'm stuck in limbo.

Yes, send in updates. I sent in a specific, personal post-interview update letter and viola, I received an acceptance letter during the next wave of notification

Whew, three times, that's tough. Applying once this cycle was exhasuting beyond measure. I can't imagine going through this process more than once. That said, I hope you get into at least one of those waitlisted schools, OP.

Yes, if you have any pending decisions, send an update expressing your interest and telling them why you're a great candidate. If one of these schools is your first choice, make that clear.

The way I look at it, if you lay yourself out there and tell a school they're your first choice, it may sway them to accept you if they're on the fence about you. Every school wants students who really want to be there.

If they still waitlist you, then you're probably not very high on the waitlist and don't have a good shot. It'll suck, but at least you did all you could, can make a reasonable assumption as to where you stand, and can focus your attention on the other waitlists.

Well I haven't been waitlisted yet, it's a little too early for the schools I have interviewed with to put those out yet, but my status is "on hold." I sent all three of them updates in January, and not really much has changed since then. All my stats are average, I think I just have terrible luck.

Sometimes it's all about perseverance. :luck:

Plus - those wait lists could work out for you, like others have mentioned. Just keep updating the heck out of those schools so they keep seeing your name.

I know of one guy, now a middle-aged doctor, who applied five times. He made it, but that's some perseverance right there! It's a very stressful process (not to mention costly).

The waitlist is a coveted place for many pre-meds. My concern is that this is your third round. Can you post more details? Have you followed up with every ADCOM willing to give you feedback in the last two cycles? And have you followed any of their suggestions for improvement???

Well, come Tuesday, I can find out whether I need to do a third year too or not.

Hang in there buddy.

I guess you misread my first post, this is my second time applying currently, I'm just scared I won't get in off of a few waitlists this cycle and have to apply for a third time.

I was stupid last year and only applied to 2 schools, and ended up being waitlisted at one. My stats are all average, and I addressed my lack of clinical experience that was cited in my post-interview feedback.

That's awesome resolve. Honestly, I don't think I would have that kind of stamina (I'm already older and want to have kids some day...and not when I'm in menopause/shopping hip replacements) so I really admire those who do. Hope you get in this time. :luck: :xf:

A college buddy of mine went through three application cycles. He took the MCAT multiple times and topped out at 28 or 29. He kept working in medical research and improving the other parts of his application. Now he is a 4th year at a California med school who has done very well. He is looking forward to entering a competitive surgical residency next year, if the match works out well next month.

Persistance can pay off. He never gave up, he never waivered.
