If you don't feel like putting some explanation on your AMCAS, write a form letter and send it to all the schools along with your secondary. If you have a good reason, I don't see why it would be a big deal. If you get a blind interview, don't mention it to the interviewer because he/she won't know about it and there's no reason to poison the whole interaction.

Oy vey!!! I hope this doesn't kill me, too!! Up until I got my act together in the last year, I had half W's for practically EVERY semester I was in school. It's called untreated ADHD, untreated depression, and being a slacker for most of my school career. Then one day I realized hey, I wanna be a doctor when I grow up, and I got serious.

I'm a community college student, because oh yeah, along with all of those Ws and everything, I was a high school dropout. Now that I'm aiming at transferring as a premed bio major, I'm HECKA lot more serious about school than I've ever been in my life. I just hope "After I realized I wanted to be a doctor when I grow up, I pulled up my socks..." flies with those adcoms.

I had a lot of Ws on my transcript and got accepted to medical school just fine. I didn't decided I wanted to go to medical school until my 5th year (I was an athlete and redshirted a year) of college, and had lots of Ws at that point. My typical pattern was to register for more hours than I needed and then drop the class I didn't really like or wasn't doing so hot in. I did this mostly during the Spring semester because that was when my season was.

I never even thought of my Ws being a problem until I read threads like this when I was applying, I started to get a bit worried then, but like I said I got accepted just fine.

I think that it is safe to say that people who don't get in with a few W's probably have other issues that caused them not to get in. For example, 4 W's and a 3.2 GPA might have a difficult time. 4 W's and a 3.6, however won't make any difference. If there are only 3, I would not mention it in my AMCAS essay or send a letter. 3 is no big deal, unless you have other issues to address.

Also be prepared for them to ask you about it in an interview. I only had 1 W and was asked about it at one of my interviews. It's possible they asked because it stood out on my transcript, I don't know. But I just told the truth - that I had a death in the family - and that was the end of it.

Oh yeah - the school that asked about it is the school I currently attend

I had 2 Ws from freshman year and it was never mentioned in my interviews. If the rest of your app is strong, it shouldn't be a huge deal.
