Don't want to befriend Koreans, huh? Just vietnamese people, exclusively... =*(

I'm vietnamese. 7 interviews so far, 1 (informal) acceptance. In all my Texas interviews, there have been at least 3-4 other vietnamese interviewees.

Everyone on this forum is goin through the same thing you are so it's better to include everyone right? not just Vietnamese?

🙂
I'm a Vietnamese girl with 2 interviews and no acceptances yet. I'm waiting for 2 more schools to reply to me, they will probably be rejections because they are heavily research-based and I have no research experiences and I'm not really into research all that much either.

I've been to Vietnam and really liked it...can I be your friend?😉

well, sorry if i offended anybody 🙂 yes anybody can join the club who have not been accepted 🙂
glad to be all your friends 🙂
anybody in here is being pressured by your family? ahhhhhhhhhh, if i am not accepted this year, i will go to get a master in Health Care Administrator and get it over with, since my family does not have patient to wait for me anymore, i have in school for so long already 🙁 sad that i can't do what i love
good luck to everybody

Waiting like a sitting duck like everyone else haha Just be patient and don't let it get to you. Optimism 😀

Has any of you folks applied to Case ?🙂

Haven't been there since 1998, and yes it was lots of fun. The people there are the nicest in any country I've been to.

I'm Viet with 3 interviews.

I'm not really proud of it, and I would've wanted to do it my own way. But my interviewer happened to be a friend of my father's and someone I had met several times before. He barely "interviewed" me; we just chatted the whole time, and then when it was over he let me see what he wrote down in my review sheet and it was good.....very good.

I dated a Vietnamese girl for three years. Can I be a friend as well?

i am more than patient 🙂 i think but i think it is getting to the point where i am not sure if i should just go to grad school, which i def will have a better chance 🙂
where are you from thien nga?

i have never looked at those schools before because all the schools i chose were actually given to me by a mentor, who is an instructure at my school now 🙂 guess i should have done my own research 🙂

I live about few miles from story road in san jose.

Have you been there?

Can't you get into univ of minnesota ... I think it is less competitive than western state schools.

i have been to cali, but have not been to san jose 🙂. and yes i did apply to U of minn but i was not accepted because i guess they told me i was not competitive enough 🙂. It's sux but gotta deal with it i guess

I used to love pho, but then I turned vegetarian, otherwise I'd be down with that.🙂

Yes! interviewed in August...lots of Asians at Case which is wonderful. I'm a Viet by the way

Edit: you guys gotta check NYU out. As a liberal Vietnamese, I love that place dearly.

at least some of you guys are getting interviews, everyday i come home with nothing to look forward to, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh somebody said somethign about starting our own dental school, maybe we all should do that, i am sure we'll be good, or at least be good at trying to be 😛

Hello all,

I am Vietnamese and I just wonder... How many of you choose this profession from family pressure? If that is the case, was medicine your (or their) first choice? I have lived around Vietnamese all my life and it is wonderful to have friends who can share something in common. I also have known many parents especially with medical profession "ordered" their children to be doctors or else. Please be honest and PM me if you wish. DP

yep, pressure was on to be a doctor of some sort. i chose dentistry for myself though.

Hello,

Choose a profession that you like, NOT what your parents want you to be. My father was an MD, my older brother is a PhD and my parents told me to go into any field that I like. I choose dentistry and that is the best career choice I made. That is what I will tell my future kids. I have known too many Asian parents that force their kids to be medical doctors and they would not settle for anything else such as law, engineers, dentistry or bussiness. The old saying that "parents know best" I think does more harm than good. Rethink your career choice as you will have to live with it, not your parents. This is what I preach to Asian college students regardless of what field they are going into if they do it because of parental pressure. DP

i chose dentistry for myself:idea:

I eat Pho on a weekly basis, do I count? 😀

My fiancee is Japanese, and I know she has felt the pressure.👎 She would have acheived regardless though.

Not vietnamese but I DO LOVE PHO!

note to self: why am I searching these forums for food?

hehehe, in my case, i am so difference, cuz my parents listened to my sister, who had a degree in MIS, and she was very successful before Y2K, so she told my parents that i would not be smart enough to go to dental school and it's too much of a committment that i am not determined enough to be a dentist so my parents told me to go in to computers too. THen i graduated, then i went to work, I DESPITED the job, i mean who wants to look at a computer screen 8 hours a day? i know i don't, so i told them, the heck with it, i am going back to school. I don't care what it takes. Now since i haven't been accepted to dental school, they said I TOLD YOU SO! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i do not understand why some asian parents are not so supportive when it comes to their kids? I love my parents dearly, but i blame them sometimes, especially now ehehehheeh

hm.. It's easy. Marrying a dentist will make your parents happy. 😀 😀 I'm still available ..kekeke

I don't think you actually chose anything for "yourself" in life. I don't mean to get philosophical on you all, but nothing we [every race] do is completely freewill. With that said, I chose dentistry because it's a family oriented career, it provides me job security, I can make a good living with it, I can be my own boss, I work less, and only 4 yrs and no residency.
I also agree with the HuyetKiem  .

Hello fellow vietnamese! I am not applying this year, but will be applying next year. Anyway, just wanted to share my story about "crazy" asian parents too.. hehe j/k. I love my parents! but most of us here know what kind of pressure they put on us. Anyway, my parents want me to be a MD or pharmacist.. for some odd reason dentistry is not very popular amongst asian parents.. well at least the ppl I've been exposed to so far. But yeah, I picked nursing at first, got into nursing school, withdrew from most of the classes the first semester.. and here I am now. Good luck to everyone who are applying for the 2007 cycle!

yah, that's true, but the problem is i can't find any dentists who would be crazy enough to marry me so i guess i gotta become one myself 😛

yes, i agree with you very much here. I think the problem with asian people is that some of them do not see dental care as a necessity, but rather it's just a cosmetic thing, so you can live without it to save money. My sister asked me "why do you want to work in a profession where people spit in your face?" i was shocked and horrified that i did not know what to say. To a lot of asian people i know, they think dentists are those who cannot get into medical school so they become a dentist 😡 IGNORANT people drive me nuts!
keep the faith people, we will all end up in dental school 🙂

Ya know, the whole asian pressure thing just perplexes me. Of course, I'm a corn fed white boy from the midwest, so I probably shouldn't know. I've been trying for so long to get my fiancee to "free" herself from her parents and their "pressure", but she won't. I could have easily supported us, but she always accepted what they gave, and thus obligated us to them. Sometimes, I feel as if I have been sucked into the whole pressure situation, and I'm NOT ASIAN! But that's fine, I definitely sympathize with you guys, and will try to make sure my finacee will not do the same thing to our kids🙂 Hopefully they will be professional athletes😎

I already told my parents, my son is the next Tiger Woods and my daughter is going to be the next Michelle Kwan ^_^ hehe

eh...try as you may, it's really hard to break away from parental/cultural baggage. i've been at it for years, but no such luck yet. though i'm happy to settle for the "black sheep of the family" title.....haha

btw: are you a climber?
