Anybody trying to get into DDS/PhD programs?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just curious how many of you are out there. 🙂
I actually had never even heard of DDS/PhD programs before joining SDN. Can you tell us more about them? How many are there? Which dental schools have them? What do dental students usually get PhDs in? Part of this is that I'm just naturally curious, but also I think this info could be useful for future applicants.

The DDS (DMD) /Ph.D. or DMST (Dental Medicine Scientist Training) programs are kind of like MD/Ph.D. programs. They usually take about 7 or 8 years to complete depending on the school. I believe there are a little over 20 dental schools that are offering this program (UNC, UConn, OSU, MUSC, UW, UCLA, etc). The purpose of the program is to raise dental scientist who will be willing to remain in dental academia and do research and/or teach. The schools look for applicants who have a high GPA, DAT score, and at least some research experience. I believe research areas vary from school to school, but some common fields seem to be oral biology, immunology, oncology, and microbiology or some of the disciplines combined.

I'd like to do one, but am still comtemplating the military as well, so there would be a conflict of interest..

I really enjoy research, but the DDS/PhD is quite a commitment

do you think that schools look at you more seriously if you take interest in DMD/ PhD?

I just got an interview for the DDS/PhD program at UCSF. How competitive is the program? I read somewhere on the website they accept 2 students a year...

I am trying to get in for DDs/PhD program for fall 2009. I am also applying to UCSF.......I would appreciate if U can let me know how the the process works ..??

The bigger question is How do I apply for that program. I did the exhaustive research on all schools and learned that they want us to get admission in Dental school first....and then in grad school independently.

ADSAS let you submit only DDS materials..!!

😕
