I am a new strength training convert. Let me amend that to 'brand new'. I am someone, who the CA governor would make fun of. I have been advised 'Isolated -Whey- protein' as a diet supplement.

Do these proteins 'blunt' the thinking process?😕

And does strength training 'negatively effect' the thinking power of the brain?😕

I know these are silly questions, so let me ask another: Has anyone strength trained and also passed the steps without any 'side-effects'?😕

😀 I started lifting about a year ago, cut the carbs out almost completely (junk food only once a week), and was worried about exactly the same thing. Now, I've yet to take Step 1 (less than a month to go), but I've noticed that, if anything, I'm maybe even a bit sharper (80% on uworld sharp 🙂 ). I'll let you know how it went, but you'll have probably already decided by then.

Oh, and I don't know what your plan is, but you could do a lot worse than this.

The strength training itself won't blunt you, and the only side-effect of whey protein might be changes in your stooling. But if you are more than just "supplementing", the first couple of weeks of switching to a low carb diet, you will be very tired and not at your sharpest in terms of studying/test taking. After about 2 weeks, your body will adjust, you will have more energy, and you may even experience the enhanced sharpness the prior poster suggested.

Yeyyyyy Zli, thanks for taking my worries away.
Thanks for the info Law2Doc, appreciate that.

Will be switching to low carb, as soon as the proteins arrive by mail, but will be eating a tidy bit broccoli and raw tomatoes too.

Another question in general, has anyone switched from coffee to green tea and how is the experience vis-a-vis concentration/alertness in class?

The protein and strength training will probably help your studies! I have actually created a website with my brother about diet and protein supplements and whatnot. You can check it out if you want ... leanerliving.com . Whey protein comes from milk, so unless you have problems with milk, you should be ok! Hope this helps!

this thread has to be a level.

if not i have more serious questions. will running 3x each week for 30 minutes make me stupider?
will eating more lean chicken and fish in my diet instead of red meat make me sick?

.. and on a really serious note. don't bother buying whey protein isolate. unless you really don't care about the price. the whey concentrate is likely just as effective esp if you aren't training for a mr/mrs/ universe competition.

there is a really good product on amazon made by NOW Sports. it is the best i've ever had. you can mix it with a spoon, no need for a shaker cup and it tastes really good.

and no, i don't have a financial interest in this company lol.

I asked about whey-protein, as I have seen strength trainees 'bulk up like hulk', and wanted to be sure if they are steroids or are beneficial. I did not want to screw up my step prep by popping stuff which would be harmlful to my body/mind. But if my thread bothered you, my apologies.

Thanks.Yes I did buy NOW whey protein, but I chose a different retailer by 'Nextag'ing for it .

whey is just filtered protein from cheese/milk. nothing else. has the highest biological availability of any dietary protein.

so it's just eating high quality macronutrient with some byproduct i.e. lactose

I've started some compound strength training recently, and mixed in some post-workout whey protein shakes. So far, my brain hasn't imploded.

For anyone curious, I'm using the stronglifts.com 5x5 method

I used to be all about the backs/bis, chest/tris, shoulders/legs routine, until I found out that isolating muscle groups is a really really ineffective way to lift. You essentially waste your time at the gym doing that. Compound lifts are more efficient.

I really like the 5x5 training as well. I use the Bill Star version

I find that I cant study as hard when I dont work out, I am moodier and have a much shorter attention span. So it is a must for me. On the diet side of things, when I tried a low carb diet a couple years ago I found that it did impact my thinking. I felt more sluggish.

i know this is somewhat unrelated... but does cough syrup (robitussin) affect critical thinking? I have this terrible cough and I have probably have to take this on test day? bad idea?
