I just got a letter about the MOO trip ad am totally psyched - its like college orientation all over again! Can't wait!

Anyone gone apt hunting yet? Any advice?

Also, anyone hear any rumors about laptops - do we need one\is it useful? Do they make any recommendations?

many of the students have laptops. however, it's not essential for class or anything....a desktop would also work. It's kinda funny. On the first week or class, I saw maybe 1 person bring a laptop to class and someone bring one of those pda/keyboard things to take notes. By the 2nd week and beyond, students brought laptop in lecture maybe once or twice during review sessions. If u go to the library, then they have 15 laptops for u to check out to use w/in the library.

where a laptop might be useful: for classes like histology and anatomy, the powerpoint presentations are pretty helpful. i've used my laptop to download the the presentations on campus....i.e. 10+mb files...sometimes nearly 100mb for a ppt file. alternatively, u can use a thumb drive to download onto rather than the entire laptop and bring home if u don't plan on having broadband. there's also wireless access in all the classrooms/lecture halls.

-as of last spring, DON'T get a mac cuz of incompatibilities. the powerpoint presentations are password protected download or available as a web-view in internet explorer. unless it's since been debugged, it doesn't display correctly on macs. vandy is basically a microsoft/windows-based.

-for apartment hunting, many students live on fairfax avenue...it's about 3/4 mile away from campus...a 10-15 minute walk depending on which route u took.

check out http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/medschool/paddle.php and click on 'housing' for last year's guide...there should be an updated issue this summer.

Thanks for the advice!

Are the laptops in the library generally available or usually checked out?

no prob. they're pretty much available in most cases except during finals week when everyone wants one. even then, u usually get one w/in an hour. nearly all are micron laptops w/ Pentium 4's...maybe a few w/ Pentium IIIs. u can check one out for 2 hrs at a time.

I found a great place near Fairfax/21st. All of the places I saw in that general area (Hillsboro village) were nice, albeit a little on the expensive side. I'm actually moving down there next tuesday. And yeah, the MOO trips definitely are going to be good times. 👍

congrats! if i'm not mistaken, orientation starts august 9th..the 2nd monday of august. classes start two days later on wednesday. contact the admissions office to see if they have a list of students wanting to sublet/share apts. some things i remember.....during orientaiton, u'll get white coats, the deans will give an intro of ur class of point out some major points like: "this is the best entering class ever at vandy" 😉 for guys...on the first morning that u come....just come w/ slacks/shirt/tie...no suit/coat needed cuz that's when they'll hand out the white coats and call u up to get it one by one (and most people end up wearing their white coats throughout the day). u'll then get ur id's made, take care of student health forms, etc. that evening u are invited to the dean's house, and the following evening at the convocation, u get a copy of the hippocratic oath (or something similar) and take the big group picture. just remember that nashville gets pretty humid during august and sporadically rains. for books, there's ususally a used book sale at the beginning of the year so keep an eye on that. ur second year "big sib" might also lend u a few. if u join amsa ($60)....u get a copy of netter's anatomy atlas. if u join the ama ($60) u'll get a copy of stedman's concise med dicitonary (i seldom used it) and 4 years worth of jama.

Please don't take your acceptances!! Throw me a bone and help out a waitlister. 👍

congratulations on the acceptance!! vandy seems to be an awesome place for med school. I usually watch them on TLC medical shows. good luck with your studies. 👍 👍

I'm applying to medical schools now but i'm actually doing a summer research program here in vandy. I plan on applying here and i think doing this summer program will help my chances. what do you think was the shining point of your app that got you in here?? my gpa is low and i'm takin the mcats in august. I have to do well on the mcats to make up for my gpa. THanks!
