Ironically enough I am scare of needle  So much for a future doctor. Once a patient told me that he saw more pain on my face than the pain that he felt from the needle. I got better at it, but still I hate needles and they make me take shots every single year for the volunteering thing :scared: Just wondering any of you guys have something similar.

im terrified of needles and sharp objects

Ditto! I just gave my first shots a couple of weeks ago (insulin). It was nerve-wrecking, and according to a classmate, my lips turned purple. But I didn't pass out, so it's all good. 👍

Ahh interesting.
I love needles and sharp objects and stuff -- always look forward to getting a shot of any kind! In addition, whenever I'm cutting veggies or meat for a meal, I'm constantly throwing the knife up and letting it do one to two rotations before it comes back down, and I catch it by the handle again. It's a weird habit but maaannn I love sharp objects AAHH!

Wow, I didn't think many pre-meds would be afraid of needles. Kudos to you guys for persevering.

I had allergy shots once a week for four years, so I have no problems with needles. I've had injections on both sides of my big toe probably 6 or 7 times, and don't even feel it.

But the thought of an amniocentesis doesn't sound all that pleasant!

Yup, I'm definitely scared of needles too. Whenever I get a shot, I have to turn all the way around and shut my eyes so that I don't have to see the needle going in my arm or see how freaking long it is. The nurses always tell me I look like I'm going to pass out. I wish people didn't have to get shots 😛

I have passed out from having a blood sample taken! I'm not worried though, you will get desensitized to all that. It's a question of familiarity.

I've seen much nastier and bloddier things, but there is something about blood draws and IV's and the like that I don't care for. It's not the blood, but it just freaks me out a little to see such a large needle be placed in such a squishy area of the body. Oh the horror of thinking about those big veins in your arms rolling around and dodging a stick. As you could probably guess, learning to draw blood is one of the things I am least looking forward to. Oh well, as far as I can tell everyone has a few things big and small he/she must overcome.

I'm not scared of needles. I'm just not comfortable with having someone else stick one into my body.

I used to faint when I had my blood drawn but now I am over that. I have since watched local anestesia injections, bloody fluid draw from knees, bloody surgeries with no problem. I did faint recently watching a guy get the nerve in his big toe numbed. The needle was bending back and forth and he was screaming bloody murder, the fluid from the needle wasn't going in at all (took like 5 minutes) and I lost it (fainted) about 2-3 minutes into it. I think I was worked up because the guy was in so much pain that I could feel it in my big toe.

I have talked to numerous docs and nurses that fainted at the beginning and all overcame it. I suppose some people learn how to study, communicate finally when in med school and some learn how to overcome these obstacles.

I wasn't sure about my feelings towards needles until the day I performed my first lumbar puncture. As I felt the bevel penetrate the dura this warm glow washed over me, and I realized that I really, really enjoy sticking large needles into people. Weird, eh?

This isn't really about needles and shots but I assisted my dad in giving a circumcision to a newborn...at first I was like, hey, no big deal. I almost fainted at the cutting part..and it was so bloody 😳

Wow, wrong emoticon

Interesting. I've had my big toenail completely removed maybe 3 times on both feet, and the first time I didn't know what to expect. The syringe was big but the needle was very short, so I figured it would be no big deal. My doctor actually commented that I was weird to watch this procedure on my own foot. The injections weren't bad at all, and it was kind of cool to see the toe swell up from the liquid expanding the skin. There was some pressure from all that fluid going into a small space, but the needle didn't hurt at all. After sitting and numbing up for about 10 minutes, I was surprised to see the trails of blood that had come out from the injection site. The worst part is the recovery, not the needles.

But I understand people's fears, my best friend faints if she cuts herself and bleeds, even if it's the smallest amount of blood. I have no idea how she deals with menstruation.

I have no problem with giving blood either, although a lot of people say that it's too big of a needle for them. But I've never had to draw someone else's blood, and that might be more difficult for me, especially if the patient is upset about it. Such wonderful things lie ahead for us!

the worst thing is tring to get an IV line or a blood draw on a pediatric patient, i hate those little boards we have to put them on and then strap there legs and head down and then spread there arms out and strapt them down... I actually had one patient jokingly as if they could take one home with them 😱...

My suggestion is to go donate blood and watch them put the needle in you. I was always a little bit scared of needles till I did this a few years back, and now I give blood a few times a year! For some reason that helped me get over it.

Also, a surgeon I shadowed told me that he is really scared at getting shots himself. This is a guy who cuts people up for a living!

I actually was afraid of needles until I have to give myself injections, you learn to get over it rather quickly. You can't turn away from those.

that's what i was thinking

for me, it's not the size of the needle, it's watching the blood leave your arm and go into a bag knowing it should make you feel faint 😳

first time i saw an open surgery i was a little queasy. first time i saw an arthroscopy i got flushed.

now i love that crap. i'm also training to be a phlebotomist so if i were afraid of needles, that'd be bad wouldnt it.

I am getting an MMR shot on Wednesday and it will be the FOURTH time I've been poked with a needle in a week! One was a TB test. The other two were to get blood drawn for titers. I apparently have really small veins and the needle wouldn't go in on my left arm after 10 minutes of trying, so the nurse had to switch to my right arm (and thankfully she was able to get a vein right away). Aaaaaah! And all of this is for medical school, haha.

Yeah, I have a huge phobia of needles. I'm not talking about just disliking them, but its an actual phobia with panic attacks and everything! But the weird thing is that it doesn't really bother me to watch other people get stuck with needles, and I think I could probably stick someone without it creating much of a problem. I just don't like the idea of needle going into me. I am kind of getting over it though I think. I still need to work on it a lot before I can actually get a shot of have blood drawn though, especially having blood taken, I am so phobic of needles I havent had it done since I was about 10 (and I am now 20). It isn't the blood or the pain that bothers me with shots its just the idea or something.

Well from what I am seeing I am not the only one. I know a doctor and he said that he knew a bunch of people in medical school when he went that were puking when they had to practice sticking eachother.

I have no idea that so many pre-med would be afraid of such thing. So glad that I am not alone. Can't wait until we get to give each other shots in medschool  Hopefully my partner will be gentle and that I haven't pissed him or her off :scared:

I am very OK with needles (even play with them). I am repulsed by axes and guns, as well as feces, some insects and arachnids, sharks, and crocodilians. I have no problems with crustaceans or snakes, though.

Good to see that I'm not the only one here afraid of needles. I don't really mind giving shots (I used to help my dad with his insulin shots) and although I am not the biggest fan of shots I prefer them over getting blood drawn. I think I have definitely thrown up every time I've given blood which is really sad because I want to donate blood. I do think TB tests are the WORST though.

I am terrified of needles. I have donated blood four times. Everytime I donate I become light-headed and naseated. The blood does not bother me, but if the technician can not blow my vein and have to keep on reinserting the big gauge needle into my small arm, it is very painful. The other needles are smaller and not that bad.

I know what you mean. I love drawing blood, but hate it when the needle is turned towards me  .

wow, I did not know that that was required. Sounds medieval. I bet that freaks the kid out more than the IV would by itself.

Great thread, by the way.

that situation does sound very crude and traumatic, i would probably be scarred for life

That is the same thing I was thinking. I don't think its required though. I would never use one of those on a kid when I become a doctor, it would be way to traumatic. I was held down to get blood drawn when I was 5 and it was a horrible experience...probably why I am terrified of needles now. It was so stupid, I wasn't even one of those squirmy hyper kids either, so I didn't need to be held down. 🙁

you say you wont use one know but just wait till you have a 1-2 year old who is severely dehydrated and wont stop squirming around. that being said though i have only seen it used 2 times.

For me, it's not the needle (I don't mind that at all) It's the smell of rubbing alcohol just before the shot - Gives me the chills every time. Bad childhood memories, i guess.
