Anyone Applying to Chi State?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone going to apply there? Its a HBCU, or Historically Black College/University. Plan to open in Fall 08'

Hey.. I probably will because they are one of the school that accept January PCAT.

I will be applyin in November when the app is available

Do you know of any other schools that accept the Jan. PCAT?

How safe is the area around Chicago State at night? It looks like it is on the South Side of Chicago. I am curious. In New Jersey, Rutgers-Camden does not seem very safe to me. People started throwing things at my car just east of there as I once took the local roads in Camden to Cherry Hill, NJ.

It is in a really bad area of Chicago...you would really need to be careful.

It's at about 95th and Dan Ryan. It's right next to the last stop (south) on the Red Line. It's in Bronzeville. I haven't heard good things about the neighborhood.
CSU already tried for one on-site ACPE meeting, but they were denied.

I have also heard they had the site meeting denied. A big part is that CSU said they wanted to take a large majority of the class from their current undergraduate population. ACPE did not like that.

Also, the Illinois state board of pharmacy are not exactly fans of their recruitment policies.
I just knew they were denied but didn't know exactly why.
SIUE had no problems getting their accreditation in order, but they are more familar with healthcare.

I can see why some applicants not from the Chicago Area would find the South side of Chicago "dangerous", but it totally isn't.
Chicago is one of the most culturally and ethically diverse cities around. I was born and raised in Chicago...and there are far worse neighborhoods....
For example, I live in Bucktown....a yuppy area....and just the other day...I heard gun shoots...and in the I had a bullet hole on my car....

You have to take the good with the bad...

Chicago neighborhoods are funny, you may live on a block that is really "safe" and turn the corner and find drug dealers....it's a nice mix...

I love CHicago....and the neighborhood with respect to CSU hasn't even entered into the equation for me.

I agree that Chicago is diverse, but it's also recognized as one of the most segregated cities.

And you do have a point with safety, it's never really that safe no matter where you go. I've known a few people around the UIC area, who've been mugged or threatened at gunpoint. And I'd have to say the UIC area is safer than where CSU is located.

I have heard bad stories about the south side of Chicago, only cause my parents lived there for awhile. I'm sure that if that Chicago wins the vote for the 2016 Olympics, the Bronzeville area would definitely improve.

I was born, raised, and lived the majority of my life (up until 2003) living 3 blocks away from Chicago State. It is true that Chicago is one of the most racially segregated big cities in the country. Chicago State is on the southside (an all black neighborhood). Its not completely dangerous, in the sense that a drive-by might up and happen, but its not just like suburbia safe either. There's not a whole lot to do or see in the exact proximity of the campus, but hey, its Chicago, and there's always something going on somewhere. I could see someone having a problem finding somewhere comfortably to live that's close to campus. But most people that actually live in Chicago have very little respect for the school and are very cautious to apply to their pharmacy school, due to past accredidation problems for other programs, and lack of professionalism and organization of the university.

I just have to say something. CSU is not the joke that many on this forum seem to think it is. I went to school there for 3 semesters part time while I was working and I am now enrolled at UIC. So far I have had a positive experience at UIC but I will say that at CSU teachers are more involved with their students and are not as impersonal. Since it's a smaller school the professors spend more time actually teaching where as at UIC you have to teach yourself most of the time. I transferred to major in Bioengineering and because of the medical school. The only B I've received in recent years was at CSU in a spanish class I took for native speakers which was ridiculously hard. At UIC I have taken Physics I and 11 with calc, calc II & III, and various Bioengineering classes and have earned an A in every class so far. So contrary to popular belief the quality of education at CSU is not inferior to other state schools in the area. The idea that they are just handing out degrees and it's the last option for academically inferior students is just plain wrong. People who believe this must be either racist or incredibly ignorant. And here's another newsflash. There is a sizeable white population at CSU. In every one of my classes there were at least a handful of students who were white. I attended one of the information sessions for the college of pharmacy and the majority of people in attendance where white. So how can the school choose a class of mostly minorities when the majority of applicants are more than likely going to be white? The majority of CSU's population is black or latino but just as we're underrpresented in most fields this will probably be the case at the college of pharmacy. But I applaude their efforts to recruit minorities.

For those interested in applying I would say apply with confidence. They are hiring experienced faculty. The founding dean helped start the Midwestern University pharmacy college in IL and AZ. Some of the faculty were also recruited from UIC. There is too much invested in this college for it to fail.

As far as the neigborhood goes it is not as dangerous as many claim. No area in Chicago is perfect and I would argue that the area near UIC has more crime.

I would definitely take the bus even in the day. I walked 2 times to their campus from red line to get a book [weren't very helpful] and unlike the pics, the campus outside area "greeN' is all bushes and not very well maintained. They just made a new library so I believe the empty older library space might be where they will set up the pharmacy program!

I just wonder why doesn't Loyola, for example, open an pharmacy program since it is a growing field and they should have enough students unlike the "dearth of students" that shut down their dental program..

Well area around UIC is not very good either but I guess it could be relatively safer if that is even valid for our comparison purposes? 😕

Maybe for commuters that they can quickly get on the train and get the hell out of downtown lol.

PS How do people know CSU has been denied when there is no information on their site about it?
