Is there anyone applying to the creighton predental post bac?

i'm in the program now, so feel free to hit me up with any questions.

srb711:

I've applied to the program, could you tell me how the process was for you and how you are doing now? What are the pros and cons? I've been trying for over four years to gain entry, so hopefully this could be the chance I need!!

Thx

I sent my app in a week ago.. I think im going to call them at the beginning of December and make sure they have everything since I know they don't give out interviews till Spring..

futureDMD: the process went pretty well for me. I didn't apply until I found out that I didn't get in to my state school, which was in late January... I basically had to FedEx my application to them, but it all worked out in the long run (I don't think they factor in how early you submit your app). I found out in February that I got an interview, which was in the middle of March (spring break for me). They interviewed all 15 of us on the same day (for 7 spots) and I thought it was a good experience.

As far as the actual program... It's going great. I wasn't a science major in undergrad, so the science classes are helping me a lot. We spend Fridays shadowing at the dental school and at a community clinic in Omaha. It's hard to believe I'm 5 months in to the program (I guess because they keep us pretty busy).

flow2009: I wouldn't worry too much about calling them in December... I'm willing to bet they don't even as much as glance at the applications until January/February (mainly because they do the Medical post-bacc interviews a month earlier).

Quick question, so is the cost of the program the same rate the dental students pay; which looks like 22,000 per semester totaling around 44,000 for one year??? 🙁, sounds scary!!!

how do you apply to this program?

i went on the website and the application form does not ask about grades or DAT scores or anything. just a personal statement? do you not have to send transcripts in or anything?

link to the application: http://www.creighton.edu/health/hsmaca/predentpostbac/appprocess/index.php

The cost is not as much as dental school, but it's not exactly cheap. I think for the 13 month program it's somewhere around $30,000. They try to sell it like this: if you complete it successfully, you'll get a $10,000 scholarship for 4 years. So they say you come out $10,000 ahead. Either way you look at it, you're guaranteed a spot in dental school, so it's worth it.

As far as how you apply, go to the above link and read it. It says you're required to submit a copy of your AADSAS and DAT scores, so you do need that stuff.

Is there any advice you could give me if I'm chosen for an interview? What is the interview style (one-on-one or group)? How are the courses you taken thus far??

Thx!!😳

hmmm... as far as advice for the interview: well first off, if they do it the same way as last year then they'll invite 15 students to interview and it's all on the same day. So you all hang out in the board room at the dental school and you interview with four different people throughout the day. It's a long day, you start at 8:30 and it goes til about 4. They're looking for students that work well with others, because the 14 of you (7 med, 7 dental) will be taking every class together for a year. It's really like every other interview, you have to be yourself and show them that you will fit their program well.

I am in a difficult position. I had an interview w/ Creighton back in October but didn't get that acceptance e-mail Dec 1st. the second round is apparently Jan 15th, and if I don't get accepted then they once again will hold on to my application till later. I really want to apply to the postbac program just in case...... but it seems to be impossible for this cycle!
any ideas?

Well, hopefully you'll get in on the 15th. If not, gather up everything and apply for the post bacc program. A couple of my classmates got invited to apply after they didn't get in to Creighton, so I wouldn't say it's impossible. They'll already have your AADSAS application, so your letters of recommendation from that would be just fine... you would just have to submit the post bacc application.

Thanks a lot, just a few more questions since you said a couple of your classmates have done this b4. Do you know if the school is going to inform us about their decision either way (accepted or not) by Jan15th? or they are going to hold on to our applications till later? Also, do you know how this second round works? Basically, what are the chances of getting in for students like me who already had an interview but didn't get accepted the first round? I am really nervous and stressed out and Creighton is where I really want to go! So, I appreciate any insights!
Again, thank you!

I just noticed that you are already in the program. Great! I hope you can help me w/ my questions 🙂

hastytx: I'm not that familiar with the process over at the dental school, so I'm not sure I can answer those questions as well as the people that work in admissions. Please feel free to continue to ask questions about the post bacc program tho.

If you don't mind me asking what were your grades like at the end of your first semester/quarter as a creighton dental post bacc student?

I had a 3.7 in the summer term. We just finished our fall semester on Thursday so I haven't gotten all of those grades, but some are posted already and a few of them went up.

I'm applying to this program as well. I was wondering if after the diagnostic summer session of the program, are you required to take the DAT before beginning the academic year?

You take the DAT in late January. They set it up this way so that you can maximize from the classes you take in the summer and spring (you also take Kaplan in the Fall).

Has anyone gotten into the program and not had to re-do their DAT? Just focused on the GPA section?

I do not believe so. The dental post bacc has been around for 5 years (my class is the 5th), so the students from the first class are in their fourth year of dental school. I guess my point is that I've been able to interact with most of the prior post bacc students and I don't know of any that haven't had to retake the DAT. I assume that it's required to retake it.

srb711:

Can you recall if you received a confirmation of your application to ensure it was complete, before your interview? I've been trying to get into contact with the program administration but this has proven difficult. Any advice??

Thx

Yeah, I would like to know that answer too? I just submitted my application today.

FutureDMDDDS: Did you send your letters to Creighton seperate or all together with your application? I am sending mine separate do you think that will matter?

So im not a URM or disadvantaged in any way. do i still have a chance at Creighton????

They never confirmed that they received my application. I overnighted mine (due to inclement weather where I was living) and called the next day to make sure they had received it (I called the dental admissions office I think). Also, be patient with Creighton, I found it frustrating that it was always so difficult to get a hold of someone... but the reality of the situation is HS-MACA is understaffed and January through March is crazy for them because they oversee both the medical and dental post bacc applications.

srb711:

Sounds great, I'm not too worried then!! Also thank you for offering advice and your time. 😀

I know this is for pre-dental, but I applied to the post bac for med, do you have any idea of their stats, number of seats? I am having a hard time finding information on it! Thanks!

med has 7 seats as well, but i'm not sure about any of the stats for them. i talked to our program director the other day and he mentioned that they sent out interview invites last week (for med). they still haven't met to decide on interviews for the dental class yet.

Thanks for all the updates sbr711! Did the director mention when they were going to be meeting for the dental class, and when they would be sending out invites?? It seems like last year it was around mid-late Feb....Im wondering if it will be the same this year...Any info that you have will be greatly appreciated!

I applied to their med program and haven't heard anything. I guess that means I didn't get an interview. Do you know when exactly they sent the invites?

I think he said they were trying to setup a meeting Dr. Ayers (the Director of Admissions at the dental school) who helps select the interview candidates. I anticipate them meeting this week or next so you should know here in a few weeks... so possibly middle of March for the interview day (they'll give you enough time to arrange travel and such).

I'll have to double check to see when they sent out med interview invites. I want to say the interview day is March 4th.

Thanks! Do you think it would be too late to send grade updates? We're just taking our first exams this week.

Hey sbr711, thanks for the updates we really appreciate them! I hope that you find out some more information about the dental post bacs process. The waiting is the worst part of it all! Do you know how many dental post bac applications they received this year?? Do you think its appropriate for us to call and inquire about the final count?? Thanks again for responding!!

I talked to someone in the HS-MACA office today and they said that the meeting to decide on interview candidates for the dental post bacc class will be February 22nd or 23rd (Dr. Ayers has been out of town, which I think is why the meeting got pushed back). So expect some sort of notification around 4-5 days after that... and interviews will be probably be about 4 weeks from that date. I also asked how many applications they had this year and she wasn't able to answer that because all the applications go to the dental school first (not her office). I remember I called the admissions office at the dental school and asked how many applicants they had last year, so I would recommend doing that.

I called the admissions office today and was told the applicant count this year was around 60. I'm on pins and needles too!😱

Wow 60 applications. Chance of getting in is twice as hard as dental school. Wonder what last year count was.

Thanks so much srb711, I am assuming invites were sent out via email? I guess that means I didn't get an invite 🙁

nene, I think they were sent via regular mail... that's how I got my invite last year.

applicant pool was slightly larger last year, ~70

Really? The website gave the impression that all communications were via email. THERE'S STILL HOPE? 😀

sbr711 thanks again for all the updates and info!! Do you happen to know what some of the stats (GPA,DAT) were for the current post bac participants, or at least maybe a range that we can go off of?? Thanks in advance!

They read these out to us in a meeting we had with the program director during our first week in June... being that it's been about 8 months, I can't remember exactly but here's a round-about guess:

GPA's ranged from a 2.8-3.6 and DATs ranged from 15-17.

Hope that helps.

Hey there! That was exactly the info that I was looking for. For some reason they don't have anything about it on their website, go figure! Well I guess all my questions are answered now, which is sad because now we just have to sit back and wait....which I hate by the way!!! If you find out any more information or if they move their meeting date up plz let us know!!! Thanks a ton, you've been really helpful with all of this!!

I agree...thank you for understanding that we are in the same position that you were in last year; so you know exactly how we feel.

Hi, is anyone applying to other post bac programs for disadvantage students? I know there is a program in Texas that is similar to the one at Creighton, but they only accept Texan applicant. They also guarantee you a seat in next year class if you pass the program. There is also a program in California. They said all applicants is welcome to apply, but they prefer Californian applicant. Don't know if you guarantee a seat if you pass the program. Btw, the waiting is just really making me nervous.

I confirmed today that they will meet on February 22nd; they did say that sometimes it takes two meetings to get through all of the applications but they hope to get it done in one.

Hey chuongnn18, i'm applying to Baylors Post Bac as well but I'm a Texas Resident so it would be less than smart of me not to apply. Im not applying to any others tho, just Baylor and Creighton. Im pretty sure that the California programs do guarantee you a seat as well but California is just WAY to expensive so im not even going to try any of those programs. Im kind of doing an informal post bac on my own this semester. I'm taking 15 hours of upper level bio classes just in case the whole official post bac program thing doesnt work out for me and I have to reapply starting this June, at least I'll have some fresh ammunition!! I agree with you also the waiting is driving me nuts!! Hopefully we'll here something in two weeks time!!

Thanks for the confirmation!! Now if we can only manage to smuggle you into the committee meeting that would be perfect!! I wish I knew how they were going to differentiate btw all the applicants...Im just hoping the next two weeks fly by!!
