anyone applying to University of Hawaii?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
they do some massive screening before they'll invite for secondaries. and you have to have ties to the state of hawaii (at least 3 of the following 5):

1. legal residence
2. birthplace
3. high school graduated
4. college attended
5. parents' legal residence

just keep that in mind, but good luck!

yeah, there's a thread somewhere on here that lists all the criteria, there's a bit more to it than just 3 of the 5 and there are some people that claim acceptances with no ties, just a strong desire to go there. Anyhow, I applied, with no ties to HI, and haven't heard a thing!

So wait a minute. You could be a resident of the state of Hawaii, own property there, and work there for several years, and still not be eligible for a secondary?

I seriously hope there is more involved because that's screwed up.

I am not applying to this school, but I remember the thread discussing the criteria--there are definitely other things the adcoms consider, at least according to some on this board. If I recall correctly, they use some kind of point system in determining who gets a secondary, where things like GPA, MCAT, and previous work/school experience in Hawaii is taken into consideration along with the other ties to the state that were mentioned, and anyone who gets enough points gets a secondary (that is by no means to be considered a complete and accurate list, just what I remember from the other post). If I wasn't so lazy I would do a search for that post. But the gist of it seemed to be, if you had a high GPA and MCAT and/or enough ties to the state, you could be considered there.

UH states that you have to have 3 of the 5 to be considered?it?s in the MSAR. IF you have those 3 then you can be considered.... doesn?t mean you will get a secondary.

There are ~6 spots for people that don't fall under 3 of the 5 criteria.

Hi, I applied there last year without any ties to the state at all. I got the secondary and then an interview (which I was unable to attend because of money and the travel. etc etc). So I gave up my interview spot. My numbers were a 30 and a 3.87 if that helps. Oh, and I also applied fairly early.

Also, when I canceled my interview I was told there were only 5 spots for nonresidents anyway. So chances are slim!

Me too. Applied last year pretty early in the cycle, CA resident, 29, 3.95, no ties at all. Never even been there on vacation. I got the secondary and an interview but also declined due to the difficulty of gettting in out-of-state. There was an SDNer who got in out-of-state off the waitlist last year, but I believe she had one tie to the state. Good luck, it seemed like a very cool program.

i also know of someone else that got an interview with no ties to the state at all. so the requirement of having 3/5 is not necessarily true.

i would love to live in hawaii for just one year. there was this one optho that did his med school at hopkins, a transitional year in hawaii, and then his residency at bascom palmer (top eye place in the us). now that's awesome.

Yes it is true...we've already covered those that are outside of this requirement (~6 spots for them). Those that meet the 3 of 5 requirements are considered local and have a shot at all the other spots.

the 3 of 5 thing also applies to ever being able to pay instate tuition

Ummm?. yah therefore you are an instate (resident) applicant?. in other words not one of the ~6 spots for nonresidents that pay out of state (nonresident) tuition.
