Sophomore year is starting and I'm scared because I got a 3.3 GPA freshman year and while I know it's not death, I need to get ~3.8+ both semesters to get back on track for medical school and I'm also taking orgo this year.

Anyone basically been in a similar position and got a 3.8+ out after a bad freshman year? thanks just need some encouragement

Why do you think you need a 3.7 GPA to get into med school?

What if your final GPA is 3.6? What would you do then?

Grades GPA wise above a 3.3 usually get you past the cutoff mark of most medical schools as long as you do decent on your MCAT.

Just start getting an upward trend and work hard. You can do it. I'd be worried if you started moving down towards the 2.8 range.

Aim for a 4.0, always. Many people pull it off, it just takes a lot of work and dedication. But as long as you aren't doing too many things on top of college, you should have no problem treating your schoolwork like a full time job.

If you put in the time and use all the resources available to you (professor, tutoring, etc), you will get a very high GPA. You just need to be committed.

No. That's terrible advice. Go look at some actual AMCAS acceptance data.

Making the cutoff, if there is even such a thing, does not mean acceptance.

There are a lot of schools who have initial GPA/MCAT score cutoffs. SO, with a lower GPA and a high MCAT your chances of being invited for an interview increase dramatically. The first step is getting past the cutoff mark. I am not telling her to "just" get past that mark.

And plus I advised to increase their GPA so in conclusion.

Oh yes there is such a thing as a cutoff. Source: admissions member to the MSTP program at UCSD. 😉

You're terrible advice

I did it. I 3.7/3.8 after freshman year and landed a 3.67.

You have to 3.8 from here on out. It's possible. Just refouxs

Granted, I had my low point in Sophomore year (with all science classes so there went my sGPA), but the same holds true. Work hard to raise your GPA. It is going to be harder to do since you wasted thee easy classes, but you can still do it.

I quoted the applicable area to show you how my grades looked. Here's a spoiler, I got into multiple schools, even offered a huge scholarship to one of them.

Semester by semester GPA:
Freshman: 3.73 (15 credits), 3.53 (15 credits)
Sophomore: 3.23 (16 credits, including C+ in orgo 1), 3.71 (18 credits)
Junior: 3.72 (18 credits), 3.68 (13 credits)
Study abroad summer 4.0 (9 credits)
Senior: 4.0 (18 credits), 3.93 (16 credits)

Figure out what you did wrong and fix it!

You can do it OP!!!!

Seriously, you are just a sophomore, anything can happen. My sophomore year was, in fact, my best year in terms of grades. The trick I found was that I gained a bit of confidence. I walked into college thinking, man, there are going to be a **** ton of smart people here so I need to mentally prepare to stop getting A's like I was in high school. And that's what I did - I didn't get any A's my first year in college (I did get a couple A-). For whatever reason, I came to the realization that I can still at least try to hold myself to a higher standard and push through to see how well I can perform in my classes. And I proceeded to get A's in all my sophomore classes. Now, my GPA is great - 3.8 both c and sGPA - and that's with the my <3.4 freshman year.

Anyone can do it. For me, I needed confidence. For someone else, they have to party less. Yet another person has to learn some better study skills. Figure out what you are missing and don't let your goal slip away. Take advantage of help your school offers - TA's, tutor, whatever you need to be successful.
