hey guys, its late january and i have only got into one school UIC, while i think its a great school and it is in downtown chicago, tuition is somehting like 52k a year for outta state... is anyone else in my shoes? also do people know about establishing residency

Your total cost of attendance after tuition, fees, and room and board will be roughly $63,000/year. If I were you, I would start sending out letters of interest to any other school you interviewed at (if you interviewed elsewhere). I agree that UIC is a great school, and I love Chicago, but barring some kind of financial aid miracle, you're looking at enough post-graduate debt to choke a horse. Good luck 👍

in the grand scheme of things, an extra 100 grand or whatever of debt won't make much of a dent considering you'll be making around 200 grand each year post residency.

$63 g's?! jizza! thats like an M3 with chrome 20's and hydraulics each year (w/o the tax of course)...

is it really that expensive?
i was thinking it would be around the same as undergrad private schools

The admissions officer who talked to my interview group said the only way to get around the out-of-state tuition is to marry an Illinoisan. I know it's sort of drastic, but hey, it's almost 40k a year cheaper.

marry an IL resident..hehe.

reapply again. I don't want anyone who didn't get in anywhere else to be my classmate at UIC :meanie: :meanie:

Now some serious suggestion - Look around for scholarships. Transfer to UIC NOW (as in this semester) if possible (I don't know if this will really help 🙁 ). Look in HSPS or some other program where they pay ur tuition for a year of service. However, I think they will also like to avoid paying $50K a year. U can try though.. If ur parents can affords $$, ask them to buy you a house in Chicago in ur name now (Again, not sure if this will help, but u can look into it).

If you don't wanna reapply, you can defer your entrance to medical school and spend one year in Chicago working with Teach for America or similar programs.

Where do you find out the exact cost of tuition? Funny that the financial aid packet doesn't appear to mention cost for out-of-staters. I'm in your shoes rjb, and I didn't quite realize how expensive it would be. I've been accepted to two other schools where I could save at least $50,000 over the course of med school, but I'd much rather be at UIC and in Chicago.
