Anyone care to give Roseman tips while you wait?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You'll all meet together a while, have lunch then finally the real stuff begins. You will have a one on one interview for about 30 minutes. They are looking for 4 things: 1. why you want to be a dentist 2. an area where you have developed (ie shown focus, persistence or overcome a failure) 2. how you work with a TEAM (this is the major thing they stress all day) and 4. how you communicate.

Then you need to know that not only do you have a one on one interview you get together in a group of about 10 other interviewees. you will be given a topic to discuss as a group. We were asked to discuss what we could contribute to the next years class but they change up the topic so you "cant prepare" for it. Dr Harman just gives you guys the topic then goes and sits in the corner of the room and takes notes while you all talk. He doesnt direct the conversation at all you are all just left to discuss for about 45 minutes.

Lastly you will be asked to write up a little thing on what you thought of the day. Overall the day was really relaxed though I was a little caught off guard with being left to "discuss". Very nice campus, good area, good food, have fun!

Thanks. Definitely good to know. It sort of sounds like a good night sleep is pretty much the most important thing.

Do you think the cost of living is reasonable around there?

Cost of living is very affordable and the area is awesome!

yeah it is reasonable. The area where the school is is like a nice family/suburbia part of the city. Its a really gorgeous area. I think students kind of live all around the valley and drive in.

I have heard some good things about the area. Def looking forward to this interview now!

Well, thanks guys.

Try not to tear your hair out in the next 45 minutes 😀

Just got done with my interview at Roseman. It was awesome!! It was a group of about 24 people. I had one individual interview with an orthodontist and it was an open-file interview. For once, I could tell they actually read my application thoroughly and asked lots of questions about it. 🙂 Then for the group interview, we had to "get to know" another applicant and then present them to the rest of the group to "sell them" as a good choice for a dental student in next year's class. It was interesting and kind of fun. Everything is brand spanking new, no air handpieces (yay!), the classrooms are designed in a circle design so the lectures would seem more personal than a huge lecture hall.

Classes are on a block schedule so they teach one subject for a few weeks then you test on it and move on to the next subject. How awesome is that? First you test by yourself, then in a group. You have to score a 90% or above to pass but this is how it goes. If you score 88% on your personal test, then as a group you score 98%, if I remember right, they take the three points above the 95 and apply that towards your personal test. If for some reason you continually do not get above a 90%, they monitor it closely and help you with it during the term, not waiting until the end, since they want you to pass too. It's very group-oriented as far as learning/studying/testing. Also, you take your first boards after year one so it's fresh in your mind instead of waiting till year two.

South Jordan is a very nice area - lots of shopping/recreation nearby. Every student I talked to loves it there and really likes the faculty.. (open-door policy) And it's a lower-cost for living than most other dental school areas.

The next round of acceptances are going out in 72 hours but they told me that our group will most likely not be in that batch. Bummer! The next batch after that will be the first few weeks of January.
