Anyone considering UNC

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ShaylaFinn,

Don't you worry one bit about the spelling of my name! I am not offended in the least. I am going to go home now and sulk for a bit, then I am going to study some inorganic chemistry for extra thrills and giggles and to make this day even more special.

Have a great one everybody.

Coalboy, did you go through this or were you one of those who got called the next day? Did any of you classmates get in at the very end of the process?

Well, I was initially waitlisted in the middle of April, and got in around the middle of May. I'm out-of-state, and I applied kind of late, so I think all of the out o' state slots were filled when my application came up for review. However, I know for certain of one other person who made it off the wait-list (in June, I think), but there are bound to be more. Sorry I don't have any hard numbers.

A student in my lab was taken off the waitlist the day before medical school was to begin. She had already moved to Saint Louis, rented an apartment, and taken out loans to pay for medical school there. She packed up and came back to UNC.
I guess it's really not over until the first day of medical school.

I'm a tarheel wannabe too but haven't heard back from UNC 🙁
Has anyone actually gotten an acceptance in this last round of reviews, ie. received an acceptance this week? I guess I'm just having a hard time accepting the fact that all acceptees have been contacted 🙁

This thread has been really helpful for all those anxious to hear from UNC. Thanks you all!

Well, it looks like I'll be going to second look. My trip to Toronto got cancelled, damn SARS. Who else is going?

Good luck to those still waiting.

Just for your information, I called the admissions office today and talked with Tina King. All accepted applicants should know by now - either from a phone call or snail mail. Another round of letters will be mailed on Friday, and maybe a few next Monday. Those will be waitlists and rejections AND maybe a few acceptances. An acceptance would be a dream but I'm not going to get my hopes up. However, I'm with you ShaylaFinn - I'm not going to give up entirely at this point.

Good luck to those who haven't heard!!

To those going to 2nd Look this weekend - let us know how it goes!

So I called again and spoke with Tina King. All decisions have been made and have been sent out. They will NOT give decisions over the phone, you must wait for your letter to arrive.

All this waiting and the lack of communication is seriously lowering my opinion of UNC.

the letters were mailed friday. i live in durham (for the non-nc people...durham is all of 10 minutes, if that, from unc). still nothing in the mail. GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😡 😡 😡

*ST camps out in front of post office demanding to see every piece of mail with UNC as return address*

You have a few more days, Sweet Tea. 🙄 I live literally down the road from the med school (a few miles up 54), and it takes UNC mail a week to get to me ... &#$^*&#^$% Durham post office ... Good luck.

I'm getting impatient too 'cause I still haven't gotten any mail from UNC and I'm in Durham too! I was thinking I would receive it by today at the latest.

I'm having horrible luck receiving mail from schools. Last month, my first letter from Duke never got to me. I called in late March (which is when EVERYONE should have known) and they said, "oh, just keep waiting." After a few more weeks of agonizing waiting, I asked them to send it again and the receptionist said she would. So I waited for another agonizing week but no mail. Then I called a "responsible" receptionist who said she would mail a second letter. Finally received it 4 days ago with a letter dated March 11. Arggghhhh . . .

So I have a reason to be skeptical about receiving mailed decision letters.

At this point, I'm really worried b/c I haven't been accepted anywhere (sniffle) 🙁 Last week, I hit an all time low. I can't imagine not going to med school in the fall. 🙁

I really think we should start a "Durham Post Office Sucks" thread.

I was so thinking the same thing. All my letters got here after everyone else's--Duke, Pitt, Wash U, Penn. Errrgh ...

i went to unc's second look and it pretty much made up my mind that i'll be at unc next year. i thought the students seemed pretty cool and intelligent at the same time. the class was diverse and not all from north carolina. the professors and current students couldn't say enough good things about carolina but it wasn't even the things they said, rather the way they acted, that made me realize that they just love it there. the new classrooms are going to be awesome and the hospital was really nice. i'm excited to be there next year...
good luck to everyone waiting to hear

once again, if anyone would be willing to give up thier spot, i'd love you forever.😍 😍

siiiiigh...if anyone needs me, i'll be stalking the postman. but i don't think he's going to have good news for me.

HI Sweet Tea,

I don't think he is going to have good news for me either. In fact, when I see the thin letter sporting the UNC logo, I might just let my fat dalmation chase the mailman away before he puts it in my box. If I don't read it, it can't be so, right?

cptnplanetdc, glad to hear you'll be joining us next year. I was supposed to lead a tour at the Second Look day, but due to a death in the family, I wasn't able to make it. I'm glad it went well.

Good luck to those still waiting on letters!

hey guys,

I've been reading a couple of posts above about the durham post office and how it sucks...

i think it's actually the UNC system mail that is pretty slow because it usually takes a couple of days for mail to make it out of the system and into the mail (if that makes any sense whatsoever...)

Dunno, just thought I'll let you in on that tidbit...

I wish the best of luck to all of you...

And coalboy/cptnplanetdc... you can count me in too.... i'll be at unc next yr.

Hey, just wanted to update you guys on the latest info. I talked to Randee Reid today and she said that some letters were even mailed yesterday (Tues) afternoon. So it might be a while longer before we hear back.

Also, in case you're curious, we can't get decisions over the phone. Yes, I know, I'm pathetic and asked. Okay, I promise not to call the office again before I receive a letter.

I hope I didn't piss off Tina the other day. I called and asked to speak to Randee and Tina was like, "She's not here but can I help you?" I declined b/c I really wanted to talk to Randee. I hope the office doesn't hold it against me!!

The rejections are rolling out of UNC, just got mine today, much to my surprise.

UNC wasn't my first choice, but it was pretty close until all of their waiting six months after my interview for me to kiss their a$$ started. The adcom at UNC definitely seems to be lacking in some department, in my opinion, whether its quick decision making or humility, I'm not sure.

Good luck to the rest of you guys.

well, i was considering UNC, but it looks like they didn't want to consider me. just got my rejection letter. 🙁

best of luck to the rest of you! it's a great school!!

*sets up shrine to ECU...not only are they her first choice, but also her only remaining chance*

Oh No guys,

Sweet Tea, Opie..UNC sucks for not taking you guys. I guess I am going to go drive the highway of shame and retrieve my rejection. This hurts. UNC was my last chance. ECU didn't even interview me and they stilll haven't sent me a rejection. That means that I am officially not going to medical school this year and I am no spring chicken. I think I am going to hit the ABC store on the way home. I toast everyone this evening while I watch Scrubs and cry.

Tchuss🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Got the bad news today too 🙁 Hyperventilated and cryed for 15 minutes but I'm better now. This really blew my mind - I just don't understand how it happened. UNC was the last school that I had to wait on (post-interview). So now that I have no acceptances in hand, I don't know what I'll do next. I guess I am fortunate to be on 2 waitlists but there's no guarantee with that.

What do I do now? Apply next year? Continuing working? Try PA school or something else? I don't mean to sound cocky but I was certain that I would get in SOMEWHERE. I really suck 🙁

I'm sorry about the bad news everyone (especially my girl, Sweet Tea!!!!) 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Good luck with everywhere else....and don't give up!!

no prob, Sweet Tea! I'll be thinking about you and ECU and definitely keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be over in Greenville next year 🙂 🙂 🙂

And no....still haven't decided. It really depends on financial aid (and if I get off the Cornell waitlist) 🙂

You can't spell "Bunch of Pricks" without UNC.

UNC researchers announced that they've just discovered another use for sheep: Wool.

Wow, guys. I'm really sorry to hear the bad news. Hang in there for ECU, Sweet Tea. eroland, there are a lot of threads on reapplication, and a lot of people get in the second time around. If you really want to be a doc, keep trying. Sweet Tea, I know a lot of people are frustrated by WLs, but I see so many people letting go of multiple acceptances, so I think we're going to see a lot of good news on this board in about 6 weeks. Good luck, everyone.

Well, the very thin rejection letter was waiting for me when I got home from being out of town.

Yuck. I think my family and friends are more ticked with UNC than I am. "Whadda' ya' mean they made you wait for six months after your interview to send you a three sentence rejection letter?"

So, now my hopes are riding on two waitlists. Come on, May 15th.

I'm sorry about the bad news everyone - I was in the same boat. Does anyone know if UNC would be willing to discuss what they thought was weak about my application so that I can improve in the future?

I briefly considered not trying to be a doctor anymore - I didn't feel the energy in me, was tired and discouraged. But now I know that I will apply again even if this year doesn't come through.

Sweet Tea, I think you should take the waiting from ECU as a very good sign. If ECU was going to reject you, they would've done it within 2 mo of your interview. I know countless people that were rejected after 2 reviews, and they do reviews every mo I think.

anyone heard anything yet about financial aid?

i submitted my FAFSA on March 1st, so it's been more than 6 weeks. i'm just wondering if i should be concerned about the fact that i haven't gotten anything.

Thanks Special Kay! BJ at ECU keeps telling me that no news is good news, but still I interviewed 7 months ago...my patience is wearing thin!!

And yes, UNC does do post-rejection interviews. I *think* Dr. Hoole does most of them, but I think you get an appt faster if you are willing to talk to someone else.

I called the financial aid office and asked when we should expect to get our packages. Some lady told me that they are being sent out in June. I thought they had to tell us stuff by May 15th so people could make decisions. Right? I don't know...

JUNE?????

wow, as an out-of-state student who may not qualify for in-state tuition any time soon, my decision *totally* depends on how much financial aid they'll give me.

i guess i'll try to give them a call as well . . .

thanks, cptnplanetdc!

i got something in the mail about financial aid today. it says that the packages will probably go out at the end of may. that kind of sucks since people have to make their decisions without knowing the money stuff - doesn't seem fair to me but i guess a lot of schools do it this way.

has anyone gotten financial aid stuff yet? or anything else from them?

I called the office today, and they said that they are 3 wks behind schedule...

I asked the lady what that would mean and she said that we would only hear from them two weeks from now or so!

that kinda sucked i thought... but what can you do... (i know I'm going there anyway...!)

We (MS1's) have our last exam tomorrow morning. Oh, that will be a sweet feeling.....sleep......finally......[passes out on keyboard].

kind of topic but, anybody know who the local phone company is in Chapel Hill. I tried verizon and apparently they don't service Chapel Hill.

For land-lines, I use BellSouth. There is cell phone coverage for most, if not all, of the major carriers (Sprint, ATT, Alltell, Verizon, Cingular, maybe more).

i just talked to the financial aid lady and she said that packets are being sent out today and tomorrow. finally!!

Your landlord should know.

A couple of questions:

1. How many people on the list?
2. How do they rank it?
3. How many were accepted of the list inthe past few years?
4. WHEN DOES IT REALLY START MOVING ?

Sent in a letter of intent and what i thought was another excellent recommendation, now I'm giving that mailbox the evil eye.😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
