I was just curious, now that more and more of us are finishing up with this round of applications, how many (if any) SDNers are declining an offer to go overseas (Glasgow, Edinburgh, RVC, Dublin, etc.) in order to reapply next year to the US schools in hopes of getting in the next time around? I probably won't be, I'm just curious what others are doing and what the thought processes are behind your decision😛

I have been thinking about deferring Glasgow and possibly moving to Washington or Oregon and applying there. I would only do it IF I could defer though, I'm 25 right now and I would definitely not do it if I wasn't absolutely sure I would have a position SOMEWHERE. For me, its more about finances, it would be awesome to go abroad but if I can get instate tuition somewhere else then that's definitely where I would go. I also am anxious to start a family an don't want to have kids when I'm 40, so specializing might not be an option for me which ties into the finance end of things. 🙂

I'm considering it. I'm supposed to hear from Tufts this week, which is basically my last shot at staying in the US. I was accepted to U of Edinburgh's 5-year program.
Part of me wants to just drop everything and take the chance and GO. But there are so many factors - I have 4 cats, and I don't know how fair it would be to them to ship them overseas with me. I have a horse who I absolutely adore, and am finally getting somewhere with, winning at the horse shows, and I'd have to sell him. Then there's the boyfriend - I don't know if he'd come with me, since he has his own academic goals to pursue with no options in Scotland. And I don't know how much I REALLY want to spend the next 5 years in a long-distance relationship where we see each other once or twice a year, ya know? On the other hand, I don't want to postpone any longer. There's no guarantee I'd get in somewhere next year, even if I move to get my residency established, and it's a big risk.

Ugh! No decisions yet - once I hear from Tufts, then I can move forward. But that's my reasoning. I'm trying to leave finances out of it in order to make the best possible decisions for me.

I was seriously considering it. My options were international or wait a year. However, I think not getting into a US school means that I'm supposed to go international. It might be kind of stressful, but I think may be the best opportunity and experiences ever. It sucks that I will be over 5000 miles away from my fiance, but he needs to finish school too. And luckily, he may be able to get a job in New York after graduation so he'll be even closer. I'm really looking forward to the learning style and all the opportunities I will have! I feel like I need a small loan to get me to vet school and settled in though, but trying to ignore (but failing) the finances issue. I can't wait! I'm going to Edinburgh!!!

I am 38 years old and just been accepted to Glasgow so far. I am single (had a very long relationship that ended a few years ago) but would like to get married and have perhaps just one kid at this point...so I would be doing that in my 40's if so fortunate. The unfortunate thing is life does not always work out as planned. And women do have children in their forties. I doubt at 25 years of age you (eringobraugh) would have to wait until 40 to have children.

No, I probably wouldn't, that was a bit of an exaggeration on my part. It is just difficult for me to see starting a family and working my ass off to pay off as much of my debt as possible. In a perfect world I could work less once I have kids but I know it doesn't always work out that way and I also know its feasible to have a family and maintain a successful career. My fiance is 6 years older than me and I don't want him to have to keep putting off kids just so I can go to school (i.e. he doesn't want to have kids when HE is 40). I probably should have been more clear 🙂. Anyway it's just a thought, not something I am decided on yet.

I have also been in the Reproductive biology (grad school, 2 years working as a researcher) field since college and I know the risks to mothers and children when women get pregnant in their 40s. I just don't think that's something I want to chance. I might change my mind after being in school for 5 years though!

Can you do that...keep your spot at Glasgow for 2015 and apply to other schools in your year off I mean?? Also, would moving to Oregon or Washington give you in state tuition if you have been living there under a year?? Just curious...

Well some schools require you to live there only 1 year before you would actually start classes. So yea, if I moved somewhere this summer I could do that since technically I would be living there over a year before I would start classes. I'm not sure if those states I mentioned would allow that but I am looking into it, I just threw them out there because that's where I want to go.

Well, I really wish I could turn back the clock or go back in time and correct some decisions I made. Yes, I am aware of the risks, however fortunately my gyno reassures me not to panick just yet. And that he has delivered many healthy babies to women in their forties. 😉

Yeah I'm sure we all would (ESP during undergrad!). I know its possible, I just don't know if it's what I want to do. Dang biological clock...

Hi! I'm 25 too and only got accepted to Dublin (I had a few interviews but they turned out to be no's) and I've decided I'm definitely moving to Ireland because I don't think I can wait any longer. I actually have a BSEE and will finish my masters from Tufts this May and feel like if I take any more time off there's no way I will go. I've already accepted the fact that I'm going to be up to my ears in loans by the time I'm done but I don't have a choice. The way I see it is, no matter what the total cost is, when you're done with school you just consolidate all the loans for a *reasonable* monthly payment and you'll be paying it off until your 60, just like everyone else. It's like having a mortgage and I consider it an investment in my future, so whats the difference in the extra tuition, $50/month?

As for the family thing ... my mother is a nurse practitioner who has all these medical residents who are just getting married/having kids in their late thirties/early forties. So she keeps telling me to not wait and just get pregnant while I'm in school/internship/residency etc. haha! You can make it work, it's just how bad you want it.

Good luck with your decision!

Congrats on Dublin, such an awesome city. Over the past week I have really been thinking things over about the deferment thing. I will probably end up gonig to Glasgow (if I don't get off the other 2 waitlists I am on). Like you said, I'm going to be in debt no matter what and it will be worth it in the end to have the experience to move to a new country and get to experience a totally different culture. So Glasgow 2015, here I come!

Really!? It's so frustrating expecially when people keep asking if I know where I'm going yet. Glasgow would be amazing though. Where are you waitlisted if you don't mind me asking?

Just to put in my situation, and it may not be for anyone but I chose it. I was accepted to Glasgow last year, and rejected at my IS school. I did not have a significant amount of experience (in my opinion) and my application was lacking in a few areas. So I deferred Glasgow for 1 year, reapplied at a few US schools. So far, I have interviewed at Purdue (waitlisted) and Minnesota (waiting to hear back). Also waiting to hear back from my IS school, NC.

Deferring for me was the right choice. I worked full time at a specialty hospital and was able to get great experience, and also worked in other types of Vet med. I am 23 yo, so I didn't feel a huge rush to get through vet school or anything. And since I had just graduated, the year off from school has been a great break. I know its not for everyone, but Glasgow has been really flexible and understanding and made the decision easy. It is a LOT of money to go to school there. Then again, wait about another week for my opinion.....I haven't gotten into a US school yet! Either way though, the year off has been a great experience!

Compared to in state schools it is expensive, but compared to OOS, it is on par or under many of the tuition costs. Just putting in my .02!!
