Anyone else apply to Waterloo?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Since Waterloo will cost less than half of the U.S. schools, go forward on planning to go to the U.S. and if you get lucky on Waterloo focus on the money you will be saving by walking away form your U.S. school and housing deposits.

I think the discriminate and favour students in their pre-opt undergrad program. Because if people don't get into optometry from their program and aren't 'good enough', they look bad. They gotta give incentive to enroll in this degree or it wouldn't exist.

The 'Pre-Optometry/Pre-Health' program no longer exists under that name, and it hasn't since atleast Fall 2004 (when I changed the title of my undergrad program)... it's now called Biomedical Sciences. Obviously a good name change, because the program is just a general science program which enables you to get the prereqs you need for any health professional program.

I agree that there are a fair number of students accepted to UW optometry that did their undergrad at UW, but i don't think it has anything to do with discrimination. It just so happens that most people in Ontario (any many from elsewhere) that are interested in getting into optometry already come to Waterloo for their undergrad.

You'd have to compare the number of applicants vs. number of acceptances for internal and external to know for sure.

hmmm i wish that UW optometry favoured UW undergrads for admission... maybe then i would have a better chance of getting in! :p

My interview is coming up shortly.

Anyone care to share their experience this year?

do a search, there's a couple of threads somewhere...

I have interviewed with the school before, I'm just curious how other students are finding their meeting with the school.

Hey,
I interviewed last year and did find a difference this year. This year seemed more informal. They askded a few different questions...once I told them where I was from, they asked what it's really like. They also asked how I prepared for the interview, what I do to relax, etc. Overall, I thought it went well, I just hope they think the same thing.

Does anyone have any idea as to how many people are given "early acceptance " in March vs. how many acceptances are given out in June?

And of those acceptances given out in June did most of those candidates receive interviews?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Hey guys:

I got early acceptance from Waterloo about a week ago (Mar 23) and so far I only know of one other person who got early acceptance without an interview. Good luck!!!

Hey! That's excellent!!! Congratulations! Do you mind sharing your GPA and OAT scores with us?!:)

Sure, if it helps...

School: University of Toronto (St. George)
Program: Pharmacology Specialist
Year: 4th
cGPA: 3.95/4.00
OAT: 400 science, 390 overall

Seems like they are GPA intensive... But goodluck guys!

For those who interviewed with UW, how long was your interview and how did you feel afterwards?

My interview was only about 30 minutes and it was pretty laid back. Not at all what I had heard it was going to be like.

Also I asked and they said that they interviewed about 150 people for 90 spots. But I forgot to ask how many spots were left after they gave early acceptances, so I'm not sure what the true stats are.

That's funny because they told me that they only interviewed 100 people because that is the max number of people they interview every year. I was also told that interviews were only a small part of the process and after the interviews were done they were going to go over every application that met the minimum requirements, score it, and then from there they were going to decide who to give acceptances to (ie. a person could still get in without having an interview).

they'ev got no clue what they're doing...it only becomes more and more apparent as you attend the school...

Well I knew that they were admitting people without interviews, but I also work in an admissions office at another university and it makes absolutely no sense that they would only interview the exact number of people that they have spots for. Obviously not everyone they admit will accept so they have to give more offers than spots. They also told me that they had changed their interview process.

Anyways, I wasn't that impressed with Waterloo. They have nice equipment but right now my choice is NECO or ICO so I'll probably end up in the US.

Hey all i interviewed this year for optom.

BUt i also have an interview at NYU for dentistry.

Dentistry at NYU will cost 80 000 a year or Optom at Waterloo 17 000 CAD a year.

What to do? Any advice?

Optometry at Waterloo is only approx $9,000 CAD per year... a bit higher next year with the tuition increase. Of course, books and equipment are on top of that.

Apply to a cheaper dentistry school! Seriously! You might also want to consider which profession your most interested in b/c Optometry in Waterloo and dentistry in NYC are two worlds I just wouldn't be able to compare....

check Quest!
admission status is up!
:)
I think I got in.... I'm still in denial so I think I'll wait until I get a letter to make sure.

What is Quest? Do you have to be a UW student to access it?

It says you need your 8 digit UW student number....i don't think i have one of those...

I think it is only for UWaterloo applicants, not the rest of us :)

Got my acceptance e-mail today...i don't know how i feel about that though, cause i was all set to go to california! ::confused::scared:

got my email today too! :)

Looks like I will not be accepted once again :(

did you get an actual rejection letter or were only acceptance letters given out today?

I haven't received anything via e-mail so figuring the way Waterloo structures their admissions I anticipate receiving a rejection e-mail/letter shortly.

dont lose hope yet - i went through the same thing you did, only to receive my waitlist letter one week later, and was then admitted 3 weeks after that.

have faith until if/when you get the rejection letter.

Well I got into Optom..atleast something is looking out for me!

And yea tuition is 9000 for optom but all expenses included rent and equipment is about 17000.. whereas NYU Dentistry is 86 000 minimum....

I think im leaning more towards Optometry because it is the lifestyle that I want to live. Easy... simple as that....

Quick question for Tybuff and anyone else that was waitlisted in previous years: did they tell you what number you were on the waitlist? I just found out I'm number 3 on this year's waitlist. Just wondering what the chances are that three people drop out? Thanks

I was on last years waitlist and got in. I am suprised they told you what spot you were, They didnt tell us last year at all. As for the waitlist, I believe there were 3 people in my class who got in from the waitlist. I was the 2nd from the waitlist to get in and I found out in early august. The 3rd guy found out in late august/early september.

Has anyone recieved a rejection letter yet?

I got my rejection letter from Waterloo today actually, but honestly I'm not too broken up about it. I got to pick between my top two US schools for next year and even landed on the wait list at SUNY.

For everyone who gets into Waterloo, good job and I wish you all future success.

As for me, next year I'll be chilling in Chicago at ICO :)

wow, they told you? good to know that me and MK's admissions surveys changed someone's mind...

even though i begged and pleaded, they told me last year they couldn't tell me where I was on it. I got in on june 27th, canuck got in august...something, and the last guy got in 6 days before classes started. usualyl 2-3 people get in per year...there's someone on this forum pondering not taking her acceptance as i write this, perhaps you should persuade her ;).

MK: ill be callin u soon.

I'm still in the dark as to if I'm accepted/rejected/waitlisted... :(

Thanks canuck2424 and Tybuff for the waitlist info. Waterloo wouldn't tell me anything about how many got in last year. They just said "it vaires from year to year" so I least I know there is a possibility that I will get in sometime in the summer. I agree, it was nice of them to tell me what number I was on the list.

eyedesire..
i'm in the same boat as you.. right now it's indiana, but still hoping on waterloo! This waiting process sucks.. Indiana was incredible, but half the price would be a lot better! I still have my Chicago interview in a couple days.. and one in Boston next week, which I'm not sure if I'm intending yet.
What part of Canada are you from??
