I've just been offered admissions to the DVM program in Melbourne. It us one of my top choices (along with Edinburgh) and I am very excited. I'm wondering if anyone else will be starting the program in Feb 2011??

Did you accept your offer to Melbourne yet? or are you still waiting for Edinburgh?
I heard Melbourne is a great/fun city, and the university is ranked pretty high in the world.
I know someone in the Bachelor of Vet. Science program (the older version of DVM) she said the professors are really helpful, but the school can be a little disorganized at times... like giving out schedules later than they should. nothing major 🙂

Unless you get some sort of on-campus housing plan on staying at a hotel/hostel for a bit when you get over here. At least over in WA it is near impossible to rent a property without going to a viewing, let alone not being in the country.

The rental market is completely different than the North American model. Technically agents want you to drive by the property/area, then if interested contact them for a viewing time (usually scheduled so 3+ people also view it), then if interested you pick up an application, fill it out and turn it in along with 1 week of rent as a application fee. They then pick out the 'best' applicants and submit them to the owner to choose from. If you get picked your application fee goes towards your first week of rent. If not chosen you get your money back. If you get chosen and decide against the property you lose the application fee -- so basically you can only apply to one place at a time (there are ways around that but you run the chance of losing $)

My current rental wanted to see my passport, my student visa, paystubs, as well as references from previous rentals. It's also best if you are bringing pets to get references for them as well.

Hey guys. I've applied but won't get my results until December. Fingers crossed. Currently I'm in the Melbourne B.Sc. pre-vet program. Been here for about a year and a half so happy to answer any questions about the school and the area. I'm from Montreal and got my first degree at Berklee in Boston! Looks like we'll have a few more Canadians coming in next year. Nice. 🙂

I don't think I want to stay at on-campus housing, they seem to be much more expansive. I'm leaning towards the sharing at Arrow at Swanston.
Soodi.. where did you stay when you first got there? any tips on short term stays?

Hey, I very rarely post on here but I thought I would stop lurking for once. I'm finishing 2nd year in vet science at Melbourne uni and the housing market here is craaazy! moving here in january/february is a very bad time especially to find housing around the university. I moved here from the states and found a room in a house with a couple of housemates within a week but someone I know was looking for at least 4 weeks. Student apartments are quite cramped and expensive, but you're guaranteed somewhere to live when you get here. If you want to save money, move into a room in a house or find your own house but definitely get here early enough (probably 4 weeks early) so you're not stressed.

Applying for houses is pretty much exactly as described by Nexx, but in Melbourne you generally don't have to pay application fees to apply for a house so you can apply for a bunch at a time. If you're interested in finding a room in house with other students try gumtree melbourne or the university accomodation website. Once you get to melbourne you could also try readings bookstore on lygon street in carlton (that's how I found my house) which has ads posted outside or you could also take a look at the ads in the student union building.

Anyways, despite the annoying housing Melbourne is awesome!

Do you or anyone else mind sharing how much you are paying for rent?

is $211 per week a good deal? it's a 5 bedroom apt. in North Melbourne. All utilities included + furniture. I think it's a 5 min walk to school.
And... I think the place is real nice.. haha

I would say thats quite a good deal! You could probably go a bit cheaper, but if the place is nice... and melbourne can be quite expensive to live in.

Hey there. I've never been upstairs at the Arrow but it seems like a good spot. I actually first stayed at the Rydges right next to school on Swanston when I first got here for a few nights, but it is quite pricey, so I then went to the Best Western up on the corner of Park St. and Royal Parade. Ended up staying for almost THREE weeks first waiting to be approved for the brand new house in Brunswick I applied for, but also because it wasn't finished in time. So yep, as people have said...be prepared to wait! There is indeed a lot of competition...it is not a renters market. There are no application fees here but applying can be a pain. I've been to open houses where maybe 15 other couples have applied right there on the spot. Also, be aware of evil agents/property managers. Nuff said. Share housing might mean you won't have to deal with one directly which would be nice. Also, in case anyone was wondering...pet friendly rentals are quite rare here in the city.

Oh and beeabean, I'm paying $450 per week for a 2 bedroom townhouse in Brunswick East. North Melbourne in general isn't that flash, but that does sound like a decent deal if you can find some good housemates. You'll have to cross Flemington road to get to school, which is quite big and busy, but no real dramas.

@mchhuang. I have a car, but luckily I have safe offstreet parking. I never take it to school. Biking is the way to go here. Parking around the Parkville campus can be a nightmare. Public transport is pretty decent around the city too. Unfortunately, internationals don't get to pay concession fairs! boooo. A car will definitely come in handy in the the 2nd half of the degree out in Werribee.

The only thing is that the lease is from Jan to Dec.
I don't think I'll be there until Feb. and If I go back home then I am just wasting money, but I guess that's like that at most places.
there's also a shorter lease, lil more expensive, but I might consider that.
Would you be applying for the 5 bedroom apts?

oh and no, I don't think I am getting a car untill I realllllly need to (3+4th year). Maybe I'll buy a scooter 😛

that's a bit expensive but not too bad especially considering it includes utilities and furniture. I paid $145/week in north carlton last year and now I pay $120/week in yarraville (which is about 5 miles from campus so not super close). If you wanted to save money you could definitely find much cheaper if you were willing to move into a house with other people but that doesn't seem bad at all since you won't have to search around when you get here.
 
Hey guys, I'm also a Canadian from Toronto who is considering accepting to Melbourne as well. I've been trying to decide between Melbourne & Edinburgh, but now I'm leaning more towards Melbourne.

I just wanted to ask the other Canadians, who are you getting loans from? I've tried going to some banks & the most they will give for veterinary studies is $80,000 🙁

I used KOM for Murdoch and Sydney. such a mistake! they didn't know anything and the service wasn't even free.
AustraLearn helped me for Melbourne, they were much better.

Are you guys going to accept the Melbourne offer?
If you do, you'll graduate at least half a year before Edinburgh, and how awesome are the Australia animals? 😛

RMIT village looks great! I'm going to fill an application form now. I think I'm going to choose a 2 bdrm apt as my preference. What did you choose? Maybe we could be apt mates?

I was born in Taiwan and moved to California when i was in high school.

I put 5 bed room as my preference.
The 2 br is a lil too pricey for me. I don't know if I'll get it, cause on the website it says 80% of their housing are 2 br studios (I put that as my second choice). I applied 3 days ago, didn't hear anything yet. 🙁 I am anxious! haha

wow, i took a look at the 2 other choices you had up there, and really think that RMIT is by far the better choice whether price or location and ofcourse facilities wise..... hope you can get it!
 
Hey I was also recently accepted and I am pretty sure I will be enrolling soon. I am from New York, maybe it would be nice to start a facebook group or something for everyone who is planning on attending.
 
Hey everyone, I usually don't really post on forums because I often sound stupid on forums...but after reading this thread I've realized there's a LOT more Canadian students going to Melbourne than I thought!

I applied to Melbourne this summer (mid Aug.), and I used OzTREKK to apply, and I have to agree, there were great!

My friend graduated from the Melbourne program and absolutely loved it. She said the culture was great and she really enjoyed her time there. Apparently University of Melbourne overall ranking is #36 in the world so I hope that means... something good. haha

I heard from a contact my contact @ RBC is that depending on your financial situation they may lend you more, because a student loan is based on each individual's case. Another thing may help is to get someone to co-sign your loan...but apparently if you have previous loans (like OSAP for your undergraduate years) they may deduct it from the totally amount they are giving you, for example, if they loan you $80,000 and you have $10,000 from OSAP, you will technically only get $70,000. That's the information I've gotten so far...

Which banks have you ask so far? I've asked TD and RBC.. they both said $80,000 max for 4 years. Scotiabank doesn't giving student lines to international students and HSBC doesn't have student loans (only personal ones).

I'm from Vancouver and I just got offered admission as well and am excited to meet you all!

About the $80,000 maximum student loan, is that without a co-signor? I explained the financial circumstances to TD, and was left with the impression that I would receive enough for tuition. I am planning to meet with banks this week to proceed with the loans before I accept my offer. If any of the Canadians that dealt with these line of credits could help update me on their situation, that would be super 🙂

If you're talking about a student line of credit, then I don't think it matters or not if you have a co-signer. My mom asked TD for me, and she told my mom even with her I would only get 80,000 for 4 years with interest rate at prime plus 1% (prime being 3 right now.. 4% interest rate.. yuck). I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that you need the money, but the fact that you're going to an international school, but I could be wrong.

The student line of interest starts charging interest the minute you start using it. If you're parents are willing to help out, there are many other ways to get money at a much lower rate. (interest rate being Prime MINUS rather than PLUS). BUT, that being said, you could always get a student line of credit, and use it as emergency funds.

Feel free to PM me, we can help each other figure this thing out?! Since each bank and each person I've talked to are shelling out different information. I don't even know what's true anymore. haha.

Hey, quick question for you guys! I am a Canadian that still has a year left of undergrad in the states so I won't be done until Spring 2012, so is it Summer 2012 that I would apply to Melbourne?

I'm all backwards and turned-around with the opposite semester system from North America.....

I'm assuming I would apply this fall for admission into North American schools for Fall 2012 and apply next summer/fall for admission into Australian schools for early 2013...? I think? I'm still doing my research the overseas vet school app process....
 
Also, do you plan on going home for breaks or not so much?

I have to figure out working too -- attending school in the U.S. as a Canadian is a pain without being able to work, I imagine it's the same in Australia.
