Besides moving to yet another new new city where I don't know anyone, and planning to work six thirteen hour shifts a week for a solid year, I feel like I'm walking into a final exam I haven't studied for. I can't remember ANYTHING. I tried looking over a Qbook for my chosen specialty and couldn't answer half the questions. Anyone else have a feeling of impending doom? What are you doing to cope? Preparing? Drinking? This was my top choice site and specialty, but I'm running a dread:happieness ratio of about 20:1 right now.

First, thank you for providing a chuckle to some of us. Second, breathe. Third, breathe again. Seriously, the expectations coming in are not super high. Work hard, do what you're told, and most importantly, know your limits. This happens every year. No one is going to have a surgical intern doing a whipple on day 3. Residency is a long time for a reason.

Nothing can ever really prepare you for internship. No matter how much you try to read beforehand. If I were you, I wouldn't stress over it too much. I would just enjoy the last few months of your fourth year. If you want to read here and there, go ahead, but don't stress yourself over it. You'll learn a ton as you go along through intern year. And you will master your job after about 4-6 months. If you already knew everything, you wouldn't need to do a residency.

If you're truly that worried about intern year, just study for and take Step 3 before it starts to prepare yourself. I'm considering doing it myself (for different reasons).

Already planning to do that. The only problem is that you can't register until you graduate, and it can take weeks to verify, so there's a good chance I would get approved to take the test in the six weeks before graduation and the start of Internship.

It doesn't really matter, though. You can still use all that time to study for it. Whether you take it two weeks before intern year starts or two weeks after is irrelevant (so long as you can get the 2 days off). You're prepared for it and for intern year.
