I understand the idea of the rank list but why are we forced to make decisions based on a list LOL I wish it were like choosing an undergrad institution
Hey just control what you can control!I understand the idea of the rank list but why are we forced to make decisions based on a list LOL I wish it were like choosing an undergrad institution
It is funny how the people who never went through the old way love to complain when the new way doesn't give them what they want. Meanwhile the old way wouldn't have either and this actually maximizes the chance they get their highest ranked option they could get.Because it’s infinitely better than the old way. Imagine getting an offer from the place 8th on your list and given 24 hours to accept or decline. Then you’re frantically making calls to the places you like more trying to gauge interest while playing the mind game of deciding whether to take the sure thing or hope for something higher on your list.
With the match you’re guaranteed your top choice so long as your top choice wants you enough too.
Go read up on the history of the Match. In short, it was created back in the day so hospital systems and their residency programs could more easily staff the upcoming year's housestaff ahead of time (and know ahead of time if there is a staffing issue). This was back when medicine was not as competitive and thus there would be concerns about spots going unfilled and hospitals being understaffed as result. Of course, since then there are nowadays it's the other way around, and there way more applicants than residency spots across the board (once you including all the IMGs and FMGs that apply each year) so it doesn't seem to work in the applicants' favor in many cases.I understand the idea of the rank list but why are we forced to make decisions based on a list LOL I wish it were like choosing an undergrad institution
The algorithm results in the student matching match the place they like best that also wants them. It works in the applicants favor by design.Go read up on the history of the Match. Was recently reading/watching the Sheriff of Sodium's (Dr. Carmody) thoughts on the match, seems applicable here:
