is anyone else not 100% sure about what they want to do? people keep telling me i have to have my apps in by sept 1. that leaves me only 2 months to do electives...one of which im taking step 2. i have no idea what to do. i was thinking about surgery but im starting to really 2nd guess myself after considering the lifestyle. i like procedures and i like the OR, but i feel like there are so many other fields i havent had a chance to experience...ER, GI that could be potential careers as well. i feel like im running out of time and im scared i wont have enough electives/aways done in whatever i decide.

You can still add programs to your app list after Sept 1. I know of several people who decided on their specialty in December and still got into it. Maybe not their #1, but they matched their specialty of choice, which wasn't the one they thought they were doing in September.

If you are still undecided after December, you could always do a transitional year/traditional rotating internship, and decide after that. It might add a year, but what difference does that make when we are talking about your whole career?

We are all in the same boat. Unless you are one of the few lucky souls who has wanted to be an X-ologist since birth, you'll have plenty of doubt all this year...

Isn't there any way you can take Step 2 later? If you're undecided you really need that month for electives\sub-Is. I'm undecided as well (likely medicine but still need to rule out surgery), so I'm doing a surgery Sub-I and then medicine sub-I starting Monday. I don't take CK until the end of September.
