So since I submitted the VMCAS I've been obsessing over which vet school I'll be going to. I keep thinking of different scenarios such as: what will I do if I get accepted/rejected to my top choice? What if I get rejected by all of them? What if I get accepted by all the schools I applied to? Someone help! Also, are any of you having the same problem. We should have a vet school anonymous session lmao.

Um, yeah. I keep checking my status even though it is Saturday, like it is going to change over the weekend or something. I need to restrict myself to only looking once a week, and not visiting this forum every hour. It is difficult to concentrate on where I am right now, when I am so hopeful that I will be somewhere totally different and great in ten months.

I definitely remember feeling like that this time last year! I was so antsy - it's like during the application process I had never considered the long stretch of nothing between submitting and hearing something back. I had to just start telling myself I wasn't getting in, and figuring out how I would pass the time until the next application cycle (my job was not going to be bearable for an additional year). I sorta pretended there was no vet school. I have no really great advice, but I totally understand where you're coming from!

Just wait till you get in... The hardest part for me was the seven months of waiting between being accepted and actually starting!!

where are you checking the status of your apps?

i don't or try not to think about it really much. i don't have much time to anyhow w/ school and work. the way I see it, i did what I could, and now I just have to see what happens.

:luck:

Yeah, I didn't even really consider how long the wait will be to hear something--and I'm fortunate in that my emphasis was on the UK schools (and they tend to notify people sooner than the average North American vet schools)! The upside that my work keeps me occupied upwards of 60 hours per week?--> Days go by faster when there is not time to think about the vet school apps....

I have been restraining myself. Maybe tomorrow I'll allow myself one look. I come here instead! <F5, F5, F5>

I've resorted to drowning myself in my job and physics. Also, I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series (all 7 books). That should keep me busy enough....right? lol

I'm reading the harry potter books too! Except I'm reading them for the first time. Reading about wizadry school is getting me pumped for vet school, weird association, i know

I just finished reading the Harry Potter series too! I was very sad when it was over 😉

LOL I loved the Harry Potter books! I had such a void to fill when I finished them! I resorted to the Twilight saga. 😛 Not as exciting, but good! I think it is good to read books that are just "fun" when we are working so hard!

i loved harry potter, but couldn't get through the first twilight book. i think i might be the only one. 🙁 however, i do enjoy augusten burroughs and david sedaris books as well. 🙂

i couldn't make it through the first chapter, let alone the first book, so no, you aren't alone.
I read the HP books, still haven't seen all the movies for that. haven't seen the twilight movie either.
I go for "beach trash" over fantasy stuff, I guess. Give me a good chick lit any day!

Hah i'm a total Harry potter nerd. I've read each of the books at least 3 times, and just recently finished the first one in spanish lol. If/when I'm accepted to vet school, i will probably celebrate by doing nothing but reading HP.

I read the Twilight series, but I won't admit to having liked it. Lol. Not a literary masterpiece, but, er... entertaining. The movies are terrible though - Edward is supposed to look 'conflicted' but instead... he looks like he really really has to poop. And Bella looks like she... Well, I just don't think I care for Kristen Stewart at all.

The HP movies were, and continue to be, absolutely wonderful! It's sad when they have to leave things out, but they do such a great job overall. I don't even remember what Harry Potter looked like in my head originally - I only see Daniel Radcliffe. And that's okay. 😉

I hear the final book will be two movies. That makes sense I think, because there isn't much they CAN skip in that one. Man, I'll totally pee my pants with the suspense at the end, I know it. ... TMI? 😀

if there was a moment where you hit TMI status, it might have been with the energy drink effects. jk

Twilight....yeah. I read them but I'm not proud of it. That last book? Holy hell what a waste of paper. I haven't seen the movie and don't really plan on it. Harry Potter is amazing though. I've also gotten into this cute series for teens called the house of night. It's a pretty fun easy read. I don't like to read very serious literature for fun, clearly.

On topic, I am going nuts, especially as my biochem class is turning into a nightmare due to the teacher being a giant crazy, creepy (no really he's creepy as hell) @#@% and my 4 alarm migraines. I beat the average on the last exam by almost 20 points. I'd be embarassed to be a teacher that gives exams where the average is 40%, but hey, what do I know?

I'm definitely getting antsy. Im not really freaking about the acceptances/rejections yet. More just making sure everything is where its supposed to be and that supplementals are done etc

I've also been stressing because depending on what happens with schools etc I may need to take Public Speaking (trying to get out of it if only schools would email me back!), systemic physio for UC-Davis, and Organic Chemistry II Lab (got a C- first time around) for Tufts, UPenn and UFl

and trying to find a place that has the lab separate from the lecture (already re-took the lectures this summer) is proving impossible.

plus i've GOT to finish my grad degree so I can even get out of here should I be accepted. THOSE are the things that are driving me nuts.

le sigh

Which schools require Public Speaking?

if you don't mind my asking, how are you trying to get out of public speaking?

i haven't taken a formal course, but feel like it has been a significant portion of so many of my other courses that it should count 😛 i just don't know if that's a legitimate question to email someone at an admissions office

For what it is worth, I contacted KSU about the public speaking requirement and was told that my 7 years of public school teaching could count for the public speaking requirement.

I also feel like I saw on some other school's website that if you were already out of school that you were not required to take public speaking. I am thinking this was Iowa, but I can't remember.

So, perhaps if you have significant life experience if might be worth seeing if that could exempt you from going back to take a public speaking class. Be sure to get this in writing!!! But with that said, after taking microbiology last year where we had to do a presentation, most of my classmates could have benefited from a public speaking class, so maybe it really should be a requirement since we will certainly be presenting all throughout vet school! Even though I speak in front of a group every day, I'm sure I have room for improvement too. I am never very comfortable with it anyway.

I wish I could read the HP books for the first time too. But now that I'm reading them for the 3rd time and haven't read them in over 2 years it is still a wonderful experience (I still <3 Dumbledore). Can't wait for the last two movies (last movie). I read the whole Twilight Series, not as awesome as HP (nothing will ever be!) but it was still entertaining. I can't wait for the New Moon movie. TEAM JACOB ALL THE WAY!! lol

Yeah I understand how you feel. I have to give a 1-hour seminar every year to the entire dept on my research but that doesn't count either.

So far I've gotten a few schools to accept the semester in which I taught 2nd year medical students their microbiology labs. I taught 2-3 times a week and was graded on my presentations, communication, and basic micro skills. I haven't heard back from a few schools yet so Im keeping my fingers crossed that one school doesn't say "no" and I'm going to have to go take it anyways.

Squibby: I don't think any schools necessarily REQUIRE public speaking but they often will accept it as fulfilling part of the english requirement. Unfortunately for me I tested out of the writing requirement at my undergrad...but my transcript does not reflect that. So I never had to take writing. Now I'm taking a writing course at a community college and trying to get schools to accept this teaching class as public speaking to fulfill the second half of that requirement.

🙂

Western is pretty rigid when it comes to that requirement. You have to take a formal class in public speaking (I even had one that was only worth 1 credit, but it was a no-go because it wasn't worth enough credits) . And Iowa told me that I'd need to take one too...Thus, I am taking this stupid class at a community college that I hate. Those are the only ones that I know of though

Purdue required public speaking or interpersonal. I took intro to comm (pre req actually interesting) and began interpersonal communication during spring semester of senior year (horrible boring class) which I dropped once I decided I wasn't going to purdue. My only W and it was fun telling the teacher I was dropping the class. But why ?? Um I don't like it and don't need it so have fun!

Thats right I forgot that some schools actually do require it, just not the ones I'm applying to. Sorry!

The schools I'm applying to (Tufts, Cornell, Upenn, UFl, NCSU, CSU, UC-Davis) do not. But most will accept it as fulfillment of half of the english requirement
