im a ny resident and right now, i am trying to decide between maryland and buffalo (though i would really like to hear from temple, i know its a little greedy but i really liked them). i really enjoyed maryland, its program, tech, etc, but does all of that warrant me spending and extra $100,000+ for 4 years? i mean, i dont know/have heard of many dentists going bankrupt straight out of school (as long as they dont have a lambo thats parked next to their oceanside mansion), so i mean its doable. and if one chooses to specialize (not that i intend to), does that enter into the price equation? i know 100 grand is ALOT of money, but in the big scheme of things, is it that much (i also realize i would be paying more than 100,000 due to interest)? thanks for your input guys! and by the way, i think buffalo is a great school, and wouldnt mind attending either. 👍

I'm trying to decide to and FWIW buffalo is in the lead for me. I'm trying to weigh temple vs buffalo too. But the amazing tuition of buffalo, small class size, very established school, and your own chair is really appealing. Its only the weather we gotta deal with. Specializing will indirectly factor into the price equation depending on the type of loan you get-i.e. the time you're in a specialty resident program = accruing interest on your loans depending if they're unsubsidized. On top of that 100k you're worrying about, it also depends on the lifestyle you live in maryland vs buffalo (place to live, bills, etc). So take that into account too.

I WAS in the same situation as you, until I realized I couldn't justify an extra 100-150k to go anywhere but Buffalo. That's alot of money to be paying back, especially with interest. I went to UB as undergrad and will be going back. Although I would maybe like to try a different school/location for 4 years, I don't want the extra loans and Buffalo is a great school so it makes logical sense to return, for me at least.

Go with your heart.. Bc if you go somewhere you really love for the 4 years, the money will be negligible... but if you are miserable then you will wish you paid

You will be writing a substantially larger loan check for 30 years all because of whining about your location for 4 years. Go to Buffalo and take the 100K you saved to buy a practice after you graduate. Your practice is what earns you a living, not the name of the school on your diploma.
