I feel like as medical students, we don't have as much free time as we all may have been used to in the past.

Now, during the little free time I do have, I am actually really selfish with it. For example, during post test weekends, I don't want to go to a friends birthday party when I can just drink with my best friends and watch football all day. I feel like the people closest to me should understand that.

What do you guys think?

It's understandable, but the fact is the "they should understand" card doesn't fly. If you want to make sure you're still friends with people in the future, you have to make time for them. If you can only make it to 50% of the events then I'm sure they'd understand, but if you're bailing consistently then you'll probably stop being invited..

Definitely a good point haha.

Life of a medical student I suppose. I guess thats why they say its so hard to maintain any relationships during medical school.

I still want to be friends with everyone of course, but I guess what kind of person doesn't make sacrifices for the people they call friends.

This is where I thank my lucky stars that most of my friends are all in grad school or in professional programs. Their time is very limited also and they understand when I just want to stay at home with a bag of popcorn and my remote.

I'm really selfish with my time off as well. I only attend things if it's A. the funnest thing I have available to do or B. at the request of a immediate family member or close friend.

I've found my friends are overall pretty understanding, which is pretty cool since most of them have light and/or flexible schedules and don't really know where I'm coming from with regards to my limited time. I do make sure I periodically text/email/call them though, that at least lets them know you still care even if you can't (or don't want to) make it to X shindig.
