First time to post on here. Just wondering if anyone in the forum is majoring in economics or majored in economics and got accepted? I am debating on whether to major in biology and minor in economics or major in economics and minor in biology. I would just like to see what some of you guy's think.

major in whatever interests you most...or in whatever you want to major in...dental schools don't care what you major in...as long as your gpa and dat scores are good, and you are taking some science classes (to show that you're even interested in the sciences), i'm sure you'll be fine.

i'm a finance major applying for dental schools this current cycle...so i can't tell you if i'll be accepted...but im doubting my major is going to affect anything..

I was a dance major. Got in to a bunch of places. Major in what you want, just hit the pre-reqs.

Thanks for the replies. I love biology but I will get my fair share of it in dental school and in undergraduate with a B.S. in economics. A minor in biology will let me get a few higher level science classes also. I think that some kind of business background is good, because that is what usually makes or breaks a practice along with the type of personality the dentist has too of course. 😀

When I decided to apply to dental school (sophomore year), I was an econ major. However, after some thinking, I changed it to Bio.. sure it makes you "stand out," but some reasons why I changed majors were because I thought bio classes (such as physiology, genetics, and ecology) could help me on the DAT, my science GPA and BCP GPA would improve, and other upper level science courses would help be helpful for dental school (like, it wouldn't be two years since I took a science course when Igot to dental school). I am still going to minor in econ though! 🙂

That's cool, I will definately take as many sciences courses as possible because I love biology, but I have no business background whatsoever. How did you like your economic classes?

If I could do the last 8 years over again I would've majored in something other than science. Although I love science, I had to rehash it all over again in dental school anyway. Enjoy economics - your biology knowledge will not suffer if you go to dental school.

P.S. - Your undergrad major isn't going to determine if you get accepted to dental school.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that if I did major in economics, I would only have time to take the pre-reqs for D-school and maybe one or two upper level bio courses (just because I was already a sophomore). Anyway, I did enjoy my economic classes - especially macro since my prof related class material to some current events and other international issues (regarding China, Japan -- the other big countries that have money, like the US). However, what year are you? In my opinion, and I guess it depends on what school you go to -- the requirements for econ major are really more like economic courses, not really business classes - like management, finance, or running a small business. Maybe you can take them for electives though.

I'm at the beginning of my sophmore year. I am starting at Baylor in the fall. It's a B.S. in economics that is pre-health care concentrated not the B.B.A., so there are plenty of hours for science courses plus 20 for a minor in biology. I am interested more in how to manage my money, and invest it properly rather than learning to run a business. That will come with time and experience I think (hope). I will have to be advised by the pre-health department before I start so I will get some input from them also. Thanks for all the replies.

I know it's 11 years after this thread started but I'm currently a freshman and I am in the exact predicament. I am planning on going to dental school and I want to be an economics major with a minor in biology. I took economics classes in high-school and it really captured my interests enough for me to want to major in it.
What did you end up choosing to do? I'd love to know! I could really use some advice.

So the OP actually only ever made 4 posts on here...ever. As for the others, they probably are now on Dentaltown or aren't pursuing dentistry. Unless you have a big scholarship or time to waste you need to major in something with science. Maybe do biology major with an economics minor. That makes way more sense.

I majored in Russian. Apparently that made me stand out! Do what you love not just what people tell you to do.

Biology major would help you in dental school. Something with the business may very well prove useful for life!

That's sort of an unfortunate thought

I graduated from a UC in 2013 with B.A.s in Economics and Geography and decided I wanted to pursue dental school the semester I was graduating. Had done no science prereqs in college because going into healthcare was the furthest thing from my mind. It probably worked out for the better, though, because my undergraduate GPA was trash due to excess partying and general directionlessness. Finishing up a 2 year career changer post-bacc right now with a solid 4.0 science GPA and although I sometimes wish I wasn't years behind my friends in our careers , I'm pretty satisfied with my situation overall and feel I would have missed out on my breadth of knowledge and experience if I had been a typical pre-health student. Just my two cents 😉

How? If he/she knows they want to be a dentist, why make science secondary? Of course you can do what you want just for fun but why waste the time. I'd switch it around and minor in economics. But that's just my perspective.

I majored in economics. Got plenty of acceptances. PM me if you have specific questions

Hmm... You have a point. However, it might be too late to switch majors around.

Better yet, if you school has a business management or healthcare management minor, I'd choose one.

I graduated with a B.A. in economics this past spring and am currently applying. Despite applying late, I still got a few acceptances and am going through interviews currently

What schools did you get acceptance to?

Nevermind: I didn't see that this thread was over a decade old

I still would recommend Econ or another business major. It's interesting stuff and will benefit you if you ever open your own practice. You'll learn all the relevant biology in Dental School!
Why would you think this thread would be over a decade old? Lol. And yeah still unsure what business I should do.. Cause I still want an undergad degree that will help me out later in life
