anyone else not have any acceptances yet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Going to the waitlist varies so much from year to year, even at a top school. We never know. One year we took 3 and the next year we took 50! It is a very unpredictable situation.

wouldn't you expect less waitlist movement this year, especially at state schools, because of the terrible economy? due to the economy, do you think more ppl will take the school that costs half as much?

Lol. I must project a ***** of some sorts if you think I'm as bellicose and aggressive in real life as on an anonymous forum where I'm free to do so. I'm much more charming in real life.

And while I cannot speak for the school that rejected me, the one that put me on competitive hold had my interviewer telling me that I was a shoo-in and she was sure I'd be accepted to lots of places, and hoped I would strongly consider her school (which I would, if they'd just ****ing accept me). Likewise, I've had a 20 minute interview last 40 minutes because we spent a ton of time just chit-chatting about good books. A third interviewer told me he was sure I would be accepted to a lot of places and then spent ten minutes telling me what a great place the school was located in for a student like me. The one place I faltered was in the interview with the school that rejected me. The interview felt off to me, I never really clicked. *shrug*

I'm just hoping the deferrals, waitlists, and silences turn into acceptances come mid-March.

Well...good luck. :luck: You sure got a lot of interviews. Surely 9 interviews will turn into at least one acceptance.

Had 9 interviews... 3 waitlists... still no acceptance... argh...

Keep the faith.

Last cycle I had 9 interviews. ended up with 5 acceptances and 3 waitlists. (withdrew from one.)

Never got off those waitlists, though.

oh god! how trippy! scarletgirl and pianola have the same avatar! I totally though scarlet was quoting her own "unwanted and unsolicited $0.02"...

It's a conspiracy, you know!:ninja:

Really, only 10%? Interesting.

I think this was the case in years past when NU only had 2 acceptance dates (November and March). This year they have been doing rolling admissions (at least 3 or 4 acceptance dates thus far) so I'm guessing it's closer to 50% that has been accepted already. Plus the fact that NU forgot to hide its recipient list in a recent email addressed to accepted individuals 🙂. But with ~150 acceptances left to give out, there's plenty of opportunity to hear good news.

Retsage, just hang in there. You've had many interviews and hopefully one will turn into an acceptance. Seems like you've been proactive in sending LOIs which can certainly help you get off of a waitlist. But like pianola mentioned, you often come across on SDN as rather harsh. Yes I know it's an anonymous forum blah blah blah but you could maybe work on your people skills a bit before your upcoming interviews...

I can't imagine someone with those #'s getting 9 interviews and not getting in. I just can't.

I'm sure it's happened before... but those people were probably either:

a) Extremely arrogant or exhibited little humility.
b) Noticeably conservative (which makes you less likely to contribute to the crucial mission of FEDERALLY covering the millions of uninsured, which should count against you, in my opinion - but that is very bias and judgmental, of course).
c) Noticeably religious (which shouldn't count against you, but may in some cases).

You should be fine.

Oh ok, that makes a lot more sense.

I still have zero acceptances w/ 3.95 & 39.

Every day I die a little on the inside. I have trouble getting work done at school now because I doubt myself and feel like I must be a f***ing loser. No joke.

wow, you only applied to really good schools! I guess, with your stats, all schools are "safe" 👍
I'm sure you'll hear something positive, there's no way you won't. I totally get the 0 motivation for school/work thing though... I'm on SDN right now when I have an exam in less than 3 hours...

Even with those #'s, you should have applied to more middle-tier schools. I noticed you applied to Cincy, but otherwise, you aimed for the sky.

I'm still confident you'll get into ONE of those schools at least, but come on... You wreak of self-entitlement.

Eh...I don't know if self-entitlement is the right word but his posts are certainly depressing. I think he's probably got the message though that his schools were not wisely chosen. Or that he should have applied to more if he was going to aim that high.

Yeah. You're right. I was just being a jerk.

No, you weren't, but ONOY is an OK guy.

The problem is that when he posts, if readers aren't aware of his situation and all that has transpired, I think it could be easy to conclude what you did. He has caught all kinds of hell for not applying to all of his instate schools, for instance. He definitely made some errors in the app process...and he knows it, too.

As long as he knows that, that's all that matters. I was kind of being a jerk with the entitlement comment though. Thanks for helpin me out 🙂

I'm on SDN when I have a neuroanatomy exam that I really should be studying for. This class is horrible....

Sad thing is, if I don't get in this cycle, I need to get a good grade in this class, and I'm *totally* unmotivated.

raryn, you will get in! that would be too cruel. btw, i meet you at the albany interview, i think

Just got my first acceptance, so I'm outta here. Good luck to everyone else--if I got in somewhere, so can all of you.

CMS. (You got in there too, but you're going to Rush, right?)

congrats! i'm not 100% sure yet i'm also waiting on the decision for VCU. but i have withdrawn from CMS, just cos i like to be closer to the city and i want someone else to get an acceptance asap. i'm really happy for you though. i would go anywhere to become a doc and am estatic i have choices. have you interviewed at other places.

i also wish you guys some more good luck :luck::luck::luck: i hope you guys hear good nears soon and join me and student as class 2013!

2 interviews.....no news....still waiting and waiting and waiting....

2 interviews, 1 of which has turned into a waitlist.

The other is in a few days, and I won't know for at least 2 months.

Haven't totally give up hope yet, but I'm making plans for making money while I reapply and beefing up my ECs.

The hardest has to be still waiting for waitlists come June with no acceptance... do you reapply or not... such a gamble not to reapply, but if you do and are later accepted, you have wasted so much money (AMCAS)...

Why not apply to only one school, then add others when things start looking bleak?

oh, because, if I don't get in this cycle 🙂xf: i do), I'll have learned my lesson (even mid-august is not early enough), and so, to avoid the same situation, I'd want to apply to all schools ON June 6th (or is it the 4th, I don't remember the first day)

Good! That's exactly what I did and it's certainly paid off!👍:luck::xf:

you have great stats (and a great acceptance 😀)! did you change your GPA and/or MCAT in between cycles? If I don't get in this time around, I'm not taking the MCAT again, and my GPA will not change very much (a tiny increase from 3.35 to 3.42 or something...) but maybe my perseverance will mean something.

Nope, both were constant (gpa went up 0.02 or something)! I applied late and narrow last year and it hurt me big time. I think this year I was able to construct stronger arguments for why medicine and why school X.

awww, i feel the exact same way and TOTALLY agree. haha, every day my self-esteem goes down a notch. but don't worry, you'll get in!!!

Thanks 🙂 I'm just trying to consider this process to be a lesson in humility and perhaps an excuse to take a year off, haha!

you TOTALLY agree with him being "a ****ing loser!?" sorry, had to call that one out haha.

don't worry. you guys will get in for sure. over the next month you'll get at least 1 acceptance.

did you retake the MCAT when you reapplied? I saw your score was great, but I was wondering if it changed from one cycle to another.
THanks!

THE most important pieces of advice that come out of SDN are:

apply early

apply broadly

Why people do not take that advice to heart never ceases to amaze me. No matter how great your stats are, or how not great, your chances of getting in are enhanced considerably by following these two simple rules.

What is early? beginning of June!!!!!!!! (with all secondaries completed within 1-2 weeks of receipt)

What is broad? 20+ schools with a wide range of stat averages!!!!!!!

WHAT IS SO DIFFICULT ABOUT THIS??????!!!!!!!!!!!

onlyneedone -- you will prob get in but you screwed up your app chances big time, sorry.

Yeah, my self-esteem pretty much bottomed out after not getting in two consecutive years with a 3.7/35, but I'm better now. My problem was mostly school choice as well.

Aw, thanks! I did not retake when I applied the second time. Basically what happened was that I got super sick around the time I took it in June and bombed (28S🙁), got the score back in July 🙂eek::cry🙂, signed up for the next one and took it again (37N😀...N???😕). However, I did not submit amcas until mid-October (oops), and ended up finishing secondaries by Thanksgiving(oops!), making me complete around Christmas to January (oops!!) at a handful of ivies (oops!!!) and longshots (oops!!!!).

This time I was ready to go in early June, finished most secondaries by mid-August (still not ideal, but apparently not too much of a problem), and have had 4x as many interview invites and 100% more acceptances, which is to say all of one (that I'm quite happy about).

In my year off, I got a job as a lab tech and had been putting a lot more work into learning what I needed to say on paper and in person (I'm a terrible interviewee, it's true!).

So, uh, don't do what I did the first time.👍:luck:

3 interviews, no word yet...
- One post-interview "continue to review" at my state school
- Won't hear from NYMC till around April
- Final interview at Drexel is in April

Its looking pretty bleak with my 31R/3.85 cGPA.

It might not seem difficult to you, but not everyone who applies uses SDN or its mantras on where and when to apply as a primary reference. For example, I didn't find this forum until after I took the MCAT, got all my grades, did all my EC's, planned out my gap year, wrote my personal statement, selected all my schools, and submitted the primary app.

Plus you're apparently already in med school so maybe you've forgotten that it's actually not a cake walk to get in.

Those are acceptance-worthy stats.

Again, when/where did you apply?

Example: I had a 3.5/33S and applied to 25 schools -- accepted at 5. If I had applied to 20 schools maybe I would have failed to include those 5.

applying at the beginning of june is actually an SDN myth ...i completely agree with applying early but early doesn't mean you have to submit your AMCAS the day it opens... I think you should aim to be complete at all the schools you are serious about before school starts (by the beginning of september). That means you should submit your AMCAS probably by the end of July. I've seen people apply early and do horribly and people who applied late (by SDN standards) and did just fine. If you are a candidate who fits what the school is looking for then they'll invite you for an interview whether you applied on June 4th or August 4th. Blaming a failed application cycle on applying late is just an easy way to take the blame off of yourself.

applying broadly is great but it certainly does not mean you have to apply to 20+ schools! as long as you are realistic, have a good mix and apply to your state school(s) then anyone with decent stats (>30 MCAT >3.5 GPA and good ECs) should be fine with 15-20 schools.

i submitted AMCAS mid july and was complete at all my schools in August-September, applied to 19 schools and did just fine despite deficincies in my app elsewhere (institutional action). surprisingly, the school i'll be attending is the one i was complete at last (mid-September).

It is NOT an sdn myth. It is reality. I applied somewhat late in the last cycle (around septmberish), to a reasonable number of schools, with a semi-decent MCAT n decent GPA.... I just managed 2 interviews, resulting in 2 waitlists n then rejections.
I then applied this cycle, super early (like within the first 2 or so weeks), got everything in by early JULY (not september)....with the exact same stats. Nothing changed, no extra EC's, MCAT, GPA...nothing.
And I have like 5 acceptances out of about 8 or 9 interviews.
Applying early does help your chances IMO.

Most applicants will benefit from an early application (complete by June 30, supplementals & LORs by August 15). At my school, anyone with an institutional action would be set aside until September when a separate group would meet to look at just the institutional action and decide whether it was an application killer or not. So, in skinMD's specific case, early didn't matter but that is not universally true.

You can't compete for one of those early interview slots if your hat is not yet in the ring.

hi everyone,

so with my mediocre stats and only 1 md interview i've began thinking about the next application cycle (this is so depressing)

my question is this....i have heard that it is an application killer to use the same secondary essays when reapplying, but what if it is a specific question and your response would not change from year to year....what do you do, just tweak them a little?

(i know this is an absolutely miserable topic to think about but i'm planning on getting a VERY early start on everything so any advice would be much appreciated)

call_me_x, i don't really know much. but i do know this: DO NOT just 'tweak a little.' if you already didn't get in thisyear withthe essays using the same ones will NOT show any improvement. hopefully that one interview will work out though

being complete by end of august or early september is not the same as applying "septemberish" and of course i was complete at many schools (especially the ones that didn't have secondary essays) way earlier than that.

So, in skinMD's specific case, early didn't matter but that is not universally true.

my premed adviser actually instructed me to apply as early as possible because she said most schools were more likely to invite me for an interview early on when they had many spots available and i had two interview invites by mid september.

i'm aware that mine is a special case but this further strengthens my point.

Call,

I spoke with alot of advisors at my school and at some of the schools I didnt get into, and they said... do NOT even look at your last personal statement.. if you are applying to the same schools again, they will see that you used the same one.. that is just what they suggested though, if your personal statement, in your opinion was amazing, do what you want..

Also another question.. If at an interview, your interviewer asks, "Do you have any other acceptances".. Should you be honest? or would it look like youre a big donk!! I have a late interview coming up at my top top choice, and I dont know how to answer that question...

🙂
