i have been at my smp for over a yr now, have been kicking behind in my classes, ranked high in my class, have 4 awesome letters of recommendation, just did better on the mcat than i ever had before and am literally starting to feel like everything is falling into place, that *this* is my year, this is my moment, this is my time. i actually have hope that by the end of this year i will know where i am going. i have to admit after being defeated for so long, it is a strange feeling to have but nonetheless there it is.

so who else is with me feeling like this is *their* year??

Amen. 2009-2010 app cycle - this is MY year. I am boldly claiming it!

I wish you the best. You seem to be having a good year!

I hope this is my year too. I dont want to wait out again.

Oh! It's my year too! high-five! See ya at some doctor's convention in the future!

May God have mercy on us all...my hope has pretty much dwindled down to the point that I'm already thinking about my next application cycle.

You need to have more confidence. 🙂 I really think your state schools are going to come through for you this year. It's still early. Don't fret quite yet.

You think so? Sure wish I could just get 1 more interview...I'd feel instantly relieved...🙁

I really wish people would have more faith in themselves...it just turned October. No need to start worrying/feeling down until December...and even then, there's still hope. It's just waaaaay too early for anyone to get down. It just takes 1...

Girl i agree with you it is only Oct. I know it is easier said than done but there is stiil a chance if you do not have faith in you who will?:xf:

Yeah I definitely think so. I have several acquaintances who had more average stats (GPA ~3.4-3.5) and they had to wait until December/January for interview invites. Two friends didn't interview until February and got straight accepted. One friend interviewed in March, got waitlisted, then accepted. While being prepared with a Plan B is always good, I think it's still too early to be so down. Chin up. 🙂

Thanks! It's just that last time, the same thing happened...had 1 interview and then a bunch of rejections around March-April...well guess I'll have to count on a better PS and AMCAS this time around..

food; I see you everywhere this is your year to shine........

Hey guys,

It took me several applications before I was finally accepted, and I wanted to stop in and tell you to keep fighting the fight. If medicine is what you really want to do, don't lose track of your goal. Continue to improve on your application (school, MCAT, volunteering, whatever), and you will get in.

Medical school is an interesting place to be. The years of effort, dedication, and frustration will help you succeed when you get in. We have had 3 tests so far, and I have aced each one of them.

Top 40 in my class atm (out of 190)!

Keep the faith!

May God have mercy on us all...my hope has pretty much dwindled down to the point that I'm already thinking about my next application cycle.

PS. You might want to add a few more schools. Harvard, Wash U, Columbia, etc are way out of reach with a 3.4/3.3 GPA. Be realistic and realize that you all end up at the same place (MD).

So pretentious for a re-applicant. Even with your MCAT score... ADCOM's will think, "Gee, here's a really smart guy that was lazy during his entire undergrad career."

Wash U, Columbia are out of reach...probably even NYU and Case. What about the rest? Cincinatti? SLU? Creighton...all the FL schools? C'mon man...I'm not being that pretentious.

I'll admit, it was a little out of line. But, what are you thinking applying to those top 20 schools? After getting rejected, you reach even higher? I have no doubt that you will get into a state school with those scores. Florida has plenty to choose from...

I would understand the criticism if all of Food's schools were reach schools. But I find his list includes state schools and 'non-reach' places as well. There's nothing wrong with dreaming big and submitting some applications to top institutions to be considered as long as he's being realistic. Really, what's the harm?

Anyways.... back on topic.... I can feel that this year is going to bring good results for a lot of well-deserved people. 🙂 Good luck everyone.

Yeah, I applied to every single FL school as early as possible, i.e. July/early August...and no luck so far except with FIU. I added Wash U, Columbia a bit later just for the chance. I sent primaries to Pritzker and Emory and decided not to submit secondaries, which was probably a good idea. Honestly, getting into ANY U.S. allopathic school would be a dream come true...and I have no complex in terms of what school I end up at. With that said, I realllly did not want to go to the Caribbean and I want to practice globally, so DO was something I didn't think about too much (although I did read extensively about DO history and was pretty impressed with it).

Anyway, I'm frantically adding random (it seems) schools now, because FL is being just as harsh this cycle as it was last cycle...I really have no clue what they want from me.

good luck all! Even if it takes a few tries, it's worth it! (except those times when you have an exam and you're thinking about "why did i want to do this again?) 🙂

Man, you should be more careful in choosing your schools. Mdapps stalk some people over a cycle, and see what schools want. Let me break down some of your list for you, for example:

Harvard -- There isn't an infinitesimally small chance, it's just a 0. You don't get into Harvard without either connections or standout EC's. Even a 4.0 40 won't get you much past possibly the interview level. Similarly for Columbia, albeit on a smaller level. Also a high preference for Ivy students like all other Ivy schools.

Case/CCLCM -- Heavy on research, especially CCLCM, and you don't seem to have much of it. Bad fit. Case should be as high of a reach school as you should apply to, forget about Columbia and Harvard level schools. Also, CCLCM has like 1000+ applicants for like 30-40 seats, highly competitive.

WashU/NYU -- Heavy emphasis on GPA(for WashU, heavy emphasis on all stats), not a good fit for your profile.

Emory -- Heavy emphasis on special talents, like singing or athletics or whatever else special talent you may have.

Michigan -- Really don't know why you applied there, they're not that OOS friendly. If anything, apply to OSU.

All of those schools, except perhaps Case, you should not have applied to, because you either have a 0% chance or very close to that to even receive an interview. Case and Vandy are probably the highest reach schools you should have attempted.

What schools you should've applied to:

1)The other new york schools, like NYMC, Albany, the 3 SUNY's, and as high up as probably Yeshiva and Rochester. NYU and Columbia are the absolute worst fits for you out of that state, even Mount Sinai is a much better fit. I don't think it's too late to correct this, though, as quite a few of those schools interview all the way to April(you'll need to check their pages). However, do make sure to stress your desire to move to and STAY in NYC with any chance that you get. It's very important to those schools.

2)The other ones: Toledo and OSU would've been good choices out of the state of Ohio. Penn State wouldn't have been bad, but it might be a bit late now. Jefferson and Tufts are decent choices as well. Maybe you wanna try your luck at GW or Georgetown, but I think it's a crapshoot for those two schools. Maybe you should've given schools like Tulane and Loyola a look as well. Vermont probably isn't a bad choice either, but you'll have to really write countless number of intent/interest letters to them even if you're offered an interview, because I think they waitlist pretty much all OOS'ers.

Also, for those of us with glaring holes in our applications(i.e. GPA for us), we need to use every opportunity to explain the situations that lead to these holes and how we have gotten past it. Don't just ignore the negatives on your application. IIRC, LizzyM said something like "don't worry about the zit on your face," but we don't just have zits on our faces, we have friggin 3 inch tumors. We need to convince that hot girl that the tumor won't be there when they date us. I tried to downplay it as much as possible last cycle, but this cycle, I've used every possible opportunity to explain it and explain how I've gotten past it.

Aren't all NY schools super competitive due to large numbers of applicants? That's mainly why I stayed away from the East coast schools...I applied to Tufts, Albany and Tulane last year with no luck. I guess I can give the SUNYs a shot now...we're in October though - you figure it's still worth it? I'll add OSU and Toledo as well.

I agree with this...although I've got to say that you're in a much better position than I am in. For one, your sGPA is pretty high, and it's only your overall that is low; I've got both sGPA and AO pretty low. Have you been explaining the "zit" on your secondaries?

I'm not really sure, you should check each school's website. Generally, schools that interview 'till March and April don't care much about late applications. Those schools tend to have massive waitlist movements. The NY schools are not THAT competitive, but you do need to show the willingness to stay in the NY area(for the SUNY's).

Oh yea, every time there's a "challenges" essay or a "anything else you wanna tell us" type of essay I went up to the character/word limit to explain the "zit".

Where was your one interview at? Same scenario happened to me. I was invited to FSU for an interview this year in Jan., but I was ultimately rejected after being waitlisted until mid June. That was the only interview I recieved; all of the other schools rejected me without an interview, except for one school. One school didn't even bother to send me a rejection letter it just never responded to my secondary.

I see you have a great MCAT score. How bad is your GPA?

It's not so much it's bad that I had a very significant downward trend, all the way to the end of my undergraduate career. I had a 4.0 and a 3.97 the first two years, then ended with a 3.47.

wow that is pretty big drop. What happened? Did you get bored with school or was there something that happened to you that distracted you from your studies?

UF - which school never responded to your secondary?

Some personal problems that distracted me, although I should've handled it much better. But I guess it's part of the growing up experience....

TBH, you explain your poor performances through dedication to your newest academic endeavors (ie post bacc, masters, etc). ADCOM members are hardcore when it comes to academic performance, and they rarely ever accept someone who doesn't have a recent streak of academic excellence (2 years or so).

The "learning experience" has to hold true for those who have had a blemish, and the only way that the adcom member's take that cliche seriously is if you have what is said above...

I had a blemish. I also had 2 waitlists before getting accepted. During that time I did 3 years of a PhD (with passed prelims), and a 4.0 in ~30 hours of didactic course work.

Did it take forever to get in? Yup.. Committees want to see continued improvement.
