I feel like going shopping for new clothes, buying a new laptop, and iPad. I feel I deserve to eat a big steak at a fancy restaurant and go on cruise or trip to vegas or something. If only I had the money. Anyone feel this way? Basically did anyone here have an urge to spend money and take risks after an acceptance?

Yup. Had the urge but not the money. I'll have to save it till I'm an attending. What most likely will happen though is I'll save the urge till my first loan check comes in.

After a big acceptance I wanted to just splurge on food and buy everyone everything. Instead my friends kept buying me food so I guess it worked out for the best in the end since I'm broke as hell.

I think a lot of people "splurge" by not giving a crap about their classes.

Take risks, no. Reward myself with some item that wasn't absolutely necessary, yes. I bought myself some nice leather boots, but, then again, in the grand scheme of shoes, they weren't actually that expensive and I actually had a sizeable income at the time, so I could afford it.

I always told myself that with my first acceptance I would get one of those tubs of cheesecake filling and just go to town (I love cheesecake but generally eat healthy and don't allow myself to eat that kind of stuff). Still haven't done it.

I don't see a problem going crazy after acceptance. It's basically a reward.

Yeah.

During the application cycle I said if I were to get accepted I'd purchase an iPad.
Well I was accepted! So I bought one haha.

After my first acceptance, my wife and kids took me out to an expensive crab dinner. I justify it because I canceled about 5 interview. If I would have gone to all of them, they would have been between $500-1000 each. A $250 dinner (feeding 5 people) is nothing compared to the $2500 or more that I saved by not going on those interviews.

Nothing for my second acceptance.

My third acceptance (at my #1 school) was also rewarded by a fancy dinner. I also had crab for this one... 🙂 yum. I also was able to cancel another 3-4 interviews. Saving a bunch more money.

I am going to wait for late spring to get a new computer. I want to be able to use the financial aid to buy it, and I want to be able to get the newest model available. I can just see getting one now, then in the spring when the new ones come out I will be mad that I didn't get the newest version.

I was given an iPad as a gift right before the new iPad 4 came out. I was able to upgrade to the newer one with no problem. I am ok if Apple releases a newer version in the spring, but I hope that they wait until I have at least started school and am too busy to notice. Ha ha.

I have bought myself McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts or something cheap like that whenever I receive good news. Unfortunately the good news has been few and far between the past few months 🙁

I've been doing that for lunch everyday for almost the past 3 weeks.. Needs to stop lol.

I bought myself a Keurig for my first acceptance. I think if I got into my top choice, I'll get myself an Ipad. I saw this notetaking app (that you can use with a stylus) that looks really tight and way more convenient and efficient than having a notebook for classes.

I'm on fence. I can type way faster than I can write.

I want to but the SO was laid off so money is tight.

But I've also come to the realization that I'm going to be dirt poor for the next 8~10years, a couple hundred extra on my credit cards isn't going to break me but I'm still trying to save where I can. Right now I'm waiting for my Xbox to be ready (from a Time Warner sign up offer).

Yea that was one of the original reasons why I told myself I didnt need an ipad but for some classes you have to write it out. Like for genetics, you can draw pedigree charts and record things you wouldn't be able to do with a laptop. Well, you can do pedigree charts on a laptop but it would take far too long.

Yea, but for things like that I don't mind using pen/paper.

I spent 20$ on popeyes the day I got my first acceptance and have since spent around 200$ on videogames

I had been saving an amazing bottle of wine for 3 years...and then I got the call while visiting my parents' house...

...and I just remembered that bottle of wine is in my closet somewhere...

if/when I do get the call/email, screw food, i'm going to a bar.

I guess there's always residency...

I've been spending a LOT of money on food/drinks lately, which has come as a result of me simply wanting to relax and reward myself. The week after I got my acceptance, I also spent a healthy chunk of money on some clothes I had been eyeing.

And I've also been a lot more relaxed about grades - studying for finals was oddly relaxing, and I had the chance to bake brownies/cookies/etc during my breaks instead of just studying through. Which allowed me to share them with my friends as they can't afford to let off just yet. Lurrrrrve brightening someone's day with some baked goods.

And yesterday, just dropped $30ish on some of the most delicious Italian food I've ever had.. time to destroy those leftovers 😀

So it's a little bit here and there, but I'm just coasting along for the ride now.

I think I'm going to buy an X-box or PS3 when (if) I get my first acceptance. I haven't played video games in years, but I figure I could use it when I'm not studying in med school.

Pretty much the same here.

I bought one like two months ago, huge waste of money... I used to be a hardcore gamer but I've played it like 5 times in the past two months lol

I feel like almost anything is justifiable since I'm going to making a lot more in the future than most people eventually, but then every once in a while I realize I'm going to be dirt poor for at least 4 yrs. My sig other is going to be in grad school for another 3.5 yrs.

I think I'm going to buy a laptop but maybe I should wait until school starts. I really wanted one for Christmas though. I'll prob buy some clothes as well and continue to eat out. Eek! For me, any meal above 7 dollars is considered splurging on a meal though. I have a job that only pays 9 dollars an hr.

You could do the steak thing. It seems relatively affordable.

I think I went out to dinner with my boyfriend to the same place we would go every week. lol We just made that particular night a "celebration" of my acceptance, and that was fine.

0h yea.. I am right in the middle of "splurging" lol....

So many dirty jokes can come out of this thread.....
and what I just said lol.....:laugh::laugh::meanie:

I've had a nice Peterson Tobacco pipe picked out for about 4 years now. First acceptance and that pipe is mine!!

Yeah, I use goodnotes, and it's amazing for courses like genetics/cell bio where it's nice to draw diagrams etc.

It's also just nice to use for taking regular notes! I like it way better than lugging around multiple notebooks.

Yea! I thought of this too. You can just save files on the Ipad and don't have to worry about multiple notebooks and missing pages and whatnot. Another reason to get an Ipad 🙂

BTW for anyone else who has one, should I get one with a lot of memory or does it really matter? I'm probably going to end up with needing a lot of space for notes and apps but I don't know how much memory or ram or w/e they take up.

I definitely felt the urge to spend money!! By getting accepted to my top choice over another school I realized that (with interest) I had saved $100,000 in debt. With that in mind, I think I can splurge $1000 on a trip to europe this summer...

Haha, 1,000 bucks will get you a plane ticket and probably 2-4 days in western Europe, so you might want to increase that budget! BUT, I definitely agree with your splurge. I make a good amount money at my gap-year job and have decided to use my savings on a 6 week trip before medical school- either SE Asia or Tanzania, we'll see. For short term splurges- I bought myself a new camera. And a blizzard from dairy queen and Indian takeout. Nomz.

My splurging is in the form of taking a modest six credit hours in the Spring and searching for a matching liver donor soon after.

I definitely splurge a little sometimes. On the whole, I would say I'm a pretty frugal person. If I ever have a bad week or something along those lines, I'll usually have a "relaxation evening" involving wine and a nice home-cooked meal.

I'm def going to create a list of a few fun things I'd like to try...maybe paragliding? I don't know, just tons of fun semi-expensive experiences hopefully await me in the next coming months.

By time med schools comes around (in like 6 months hopefully!!), I should feel like I've had quite a bit fun before the studying resumes.

God-willing, I'll get into my top med school. March can't come soon enough....

:shrug:I may be wrong, but i THINK he's saying he'll drink so much until he ruins his liver?!?!

To the extent that he'll need to find a liver donor...
