Hi all,

Just curious as to whether or not there are any NYU students in the house? I interviewed there in Sept. but didn't get a chance to talk to any 1st years about the impression of the school. I did speak to a 4th year and she had mixed things to say about the school. I still would like some more input from current students. And oh, where do you guys recommend living? Alot of students live in dorms or apartments across from the school, while others come in from Queens. Just curious. Thanks!

Just PM me and I will answer to the best of my knowledge

I like it here so far. Faculty is really nice and wants to see you succeed.

I live in NJ about an hour 20 min from the school. Long commute but i save a ton of cash and kinda forces me to study bec the bus ride is so damn boring.

hey bronc...do u mind telling your monthly rent just to get an idea and also how you commute..

nearly 3 hours commuting per day, everyday, thats insane.

Now I see why kids are jumping out the windows, they would rather fly than take that bus, just kidding...just kidding.

I did that for 7 years (high school and college).. Three hours in the NYC subway every day.

As much as I love NYC, the daily commute is the one thing I DON'T miss. 😀

my rent...zero

I live with my uncle, so it saves me a lot of $$$

I take the NJ transit into the city which only takes me 30 min at 7am. Its when I get into the city that time is wasted. Takes me atleast 30-40 min to go from port authority to NYU

Commute isn't bad...the seats on the NJ transit are soft and recline back so I do get my beauty sleep in the morn.

But when my gf moves up next aug, I still plan to do the same thing bec around here I could get a two bedroom for about $700 a month in a nice area...as much as I love NYC, forget living in it.

Broc,

i think 30-40 min is way more time that you need. I havent been to NYC for a while now, but i remember it taking me only 10 min from port authority to the nearest stop to NYU and then a 10 min walk to the school.. total: 20-25 min MAX!

I think the most direct subway route from the Port Authority to NYUCD would be to get into the subway system at the PA, walk the underground passage over to the R/W train, and take it to 23rd/Broadway and walk over to 1st Avenue. The walk from 23rd Broadway is 1/2 block longer than from the 4/5/6 IRT station on Park/23rd, but you save time from having to change trains.

Probably shave about 10 minutes off the trip, assuming the R/W trains are frequent (which can be a problem!).

And worry not Broc, once you get your license, you can afford a nice NYC condo after paying off most of your debt. 😀 My uncle (NYUCD '86) used to live at a nice Upper East Side condo on 78th Street/York. These days he prefers greener pastures though-- Moved to Port Washington on Long Island with a 2-acre backyard.

10 min is a dream bec I travel at the heaviest traffic times. I know what you are talking about, but too congested in the early morn and late afternoon.

Thanks Tom!!!

One of these days I will try this new path, maybe next week when I don't have exams (about damn time). I know when I get my license things will be much easier, but hey I rather live like a student now than later. Its hard to get out of this frugal mode when your only income is loans 😳
