Anyone get word about Drew at UCLA?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Drew may have filled their class by sending out acceptances, but hope is not gone. They typically send out 50 acceptances a year. Many who have been accepted will not attend and many waitlisted will move on. Stay positive and definetly stay the course. It could be worse, they could have rejected you outright. May 15th is the big date.

called today. Talked to Ms. Hall. She told me she couldn't give out my status and I'd have to wait to hear by mail. Don't know what to think of that, but it is what it is, and I'll just keep praying and keep my fingers crossed, rabbits foot, four-leaf clovers, horseshoes, and whatever else brings me luck.

I interviewed recently...because they forgot to send me a secondary...long story. Anyway the interview was on the 12th but I wanted to know if I could possibly hear by June because the school I have been accepted to starts in July so I want to know before then.

Bradwilkins...when did you interview?

Does anyone know when they stop interviewing and how many people they usually interview?

I interviewed Feb. 28th. I hear they normally interview around 250. As for when you will hear I have no idea. I guess you could "politely" try and press them for an answer???

Hey guys, I am also waiting to hear back from Drew. i had my interview a month ago. Why is Wanda Hall so mean over the phone? 🙁
I think that they interview nearly 250 students for the 24 spots. Has anyone heard from drew recently?

I have emailed Wanda Hall a couple of times and she does seem so cold, but I think it is just because she has been getting a lot of calls. So don't worry about her "mean" tendencies!

:luck: Good luck to everyone waiting. Ms Hall is actually really nice and has been really helpful and friendly to me. Just imagine having to deal with numerous phone calls and emails from applicants who are pushy and rude to her. It's not that easy. Just stay positive and hope for the very best. This is a great program and I am just happy that I got a chance to interview at Drew!!!!

I never returned the Drew secondary, so today I get a letter saying "Our application has been reviewed and we have come to a decision.. blah blah. Unable to offer you a blah blah..."

It made it sound like they reviewed themselves and didn't think they were good enough for me. How funny is that? Good luck to all waiting!

I got the same letter. Ripped it up with the rest. 🙄 Whatever they can't reject me if I didn't send in the secondary.

Good luck with UCI Camel :luck: :luck:

tell jefferey that you are in this situation...he will let the dean (dr. aguilera or dr. miller). but wait a little bit longer since you just had the interview. good luck.

similar story. Loma Linda sent me a letter pre-interview that they cannot offer me an acceptance...what?? i wanted an interview.

anyhow, must just be a case of generic letters.

yes, she is very very cold. i just want to smack her and wake her up. 😀 but yeah, shes prolly just frustrated cause she gets so many calls for so many years and people ask her the same freakin questions. but i guess she can also be very nice at times.

jefferey, is cool! he gets annoyed with the calls sometimes, but he is still sympathetic to everyone. i like him.

just wanted to wish everyone good luck!! 👍

🙂 Thanks docmemi!!!!

Thanks, E-man. I got a good Karma yesterday from someone who said they just withdrew! I love that person ::tear cry::

Thanks for all the good luck..but who is Jefferey? And whoever he is does anyone have a number..but I will definitely give him a call at least by the end of May. Thanks for the support..I appreciate it!

You know who!!!

Hey Guys,
Since my interview, I have been accepted to another med school. Do you guys think I should email or call Dr. Agulera to let him know so he could tell me whats goin on with my case? or should i just wait? 😕

When did you interview?

Also, if it was recently I would wait a little while until it gets close to May 15th. Have you been accepted to numerous schools?

Okay well let me know how things work out!

yea, depending on your interview date i would wait a bit. but if you are really set on going to drew, maybe you can write him a LOI saying youve been accepted elsewhere (not necessarily saying where) and if accepted to drew/ucla you would go to drew 100%.

nov, i pmed you back his number. wanda hall is the admissions corrdinator/director, patrick aguilera as you know is the dean of admissions, and jefferey is the guy who handles all the files...he prepares them for the committee meetings, interview screenings, etc. he handles all the files. so i guess hes assistant corrdinator (to wanda). he is also there PR...he answers questions on the phone all day.

hope that helps.

Anybody heard anything??????????????????????

Wassup you guys, I think I would keep calling to see whats up. I interviewed the same day you guys did, And I heard I was waitlisted.

Hey Verbal,

When did you interview again? Did they say why they didn't even call you to tell you that you were on a waitlist? Is that how it works? They just figured that you would keep calling...hmmmmm. Anyway I just sent a LOI to them, do you guys think it will help in anyway?

Alright ttyl!!! Peace

Yeah I interviewed on March 20th and I still haven't heard a thing.

I heard that it takes 6-8 weeks anyway..but you can try calling them since it is getting close to May 15th.

Peace

Thanks, I emailed Wanda and she said "You must wait for the mailing!" Sorry !!

Geez...when is this so called mailing? I hope it comes before the 15th! Anyway good luck!

Peace...and say wassup to your sis!

Mailings do come....you just have to be patient...if it's been less than 6 weeks, I don't think you should bother them. Just my two cents.

Yeah me too.......so now we wait some more 🙂

oh yeah Jeff said as of yesterday there are still spots available in the class and there are currently about 30 students on the waitlist. Just some FYI

I called Jeff on monday and was interviewed on the 20th of March and was told by Jeff that my file had not been reviewed yet and i had to wait another month or so. He said that there were only 2 SLOTS open in the class as of this moment....

Meaning they had "Accepted 22" people OR that "22 people had promised to go to Drew FOR SURE"???

Good point Luwi25!

I dont know. All I know is that he said there 2 slots left. I am assuming they probably mean that as of right now, 22 people have been accepted. I was under the impression that they take twice the number of entering students because students might pick other schools. Is that happening now or does that happen after may may 15th?

I think it is happening now but they have to at least accept the 24 by may 15th...so good luck to all.

peace

I remembered them saying this at my interview as well.

form my calls and your calls it seems like 22 have been accepted so far. they may have all given the 100 buck deposit, but they can say no...i guess by may 15th. they still have to accept 2 more people by then as well.

then, i think as the summer goes by they will accept another lets say 24 to finally fill the class...but they prolly accept double by the time school starts.

also, thats good news if there are only 30 people on the waitlist. but i dont think thats really possible cause it seems like no one was rejected post-interview, but i may be wrong.

This is true...from my contacts from Drew and past application cycles..Drew puts everyone on the waitlist and since the waitlist movement is very limited (only 24 spots) "waitlist"="reject" in most cases.

I guess at this point we can have faith and pray. 🙁

ooops, a correction. there are actually only 23 spots this year...someone deferred from last year. that means there is only 1 spot remaining. but FOR NOW. keep your hopes up. ide say to write an loi, it wont hurt.

Martin Luther King Hospital

Morning Edition audio

May 5, 2004

Once the pride of African Americans in Los Angeles, Martin Luther King Hospital is now accused of making serious mistakes that have led to the deaths of five patients. The hospital rose out of the ashes of the 1965 Watts riots. Critics say racial politics have blocked previous reform efforts at the county-run hospital, which has been accused of substandard care in the past. NPR's Ina Jaffe reports.

That was just a ballpark fiqure Jeff gave me over the phone the other day. So its not etched in stone.

Not everyone is put on the waitlist after the interview. I know several people who have interviewed and were rejected post-interview this cycle and previous application cycles. That still leaves us some hope. Good luck to everyone. :luck:

No problem docmemi.....I just wanted to make sure that people know that not everyone is waitlisted after the interview....even Jeff told me this on the phone...rejections have gone out post-interview. Keep hope alive everyone. 😀

King/Drew to Lose 3rd Program
An accrediting group says neonatology training must stop next year. One staffer fears the council wants to shut the hospital entirely.

A national accrediting group has stripped Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center of its ability to train aspiring neonatologists ? making it the third training program there in recent months ordered to close.

The shutdown of the neonatology fellowship, effective June 2005, was another dose of bad news for the Willowbrook hospital, just south of Watts, and its affiliated medical school.

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education had decided previously to close the surgery and radiology training programs at King/Drew, effective next month. The group rarely takes such action against one training program at a hospital, let alone three.

Three of King/Drew's 18 residency programs ? anesthesia, family practice and internal medicine ? are also on probation. The hospital's oversight of its entire graduate medical education program also has been deemed substandard by the council.

In closing the neonatology fellowship, the accrediting group said the hospital did not treat enough sick babies to adequately train doctors, among other things, said Harry E. Douglas III, interim president of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which runs the training programs at King/Drew.

"It was sort of expected, but we were looking for a different kind of decision," Douglas said.

Neonatologist Roberta Bruni said she believed the accrediting council was out to shut down the entire hospital.

"The people who wrote this don't seem to have a handle on what exactly they're talking about," she said. "They're referring to numbers and data that don't have any base in reality. I think this is just a game they're playing with us."

In the first four months of this year, the hospital treated 14 babies weighing less than 2.2 pounds, Bruni said, far more than most hospitals of its size handle.

The three-year neonatal fellowship, one of the smallest training programs at the hospital, accepts only one new doctor each year.

Los Angeles County health officials are separately trying to restrict King/Drew's ability to care for the sickest newborns by downgrading the status of its neonatal intensive-care unit.

The unit historically has been one of the hospital's most cherished services and the proposal to downgrade it has been met with intense community opposition.

The county is expected to hold a public hearing on the downgrading in June before the Board of Supervisors considers finalizing it.

Douglas said the university was working hard to maintain and improve its remaining doctor-training programs. The accreditation of its emergency medicine and pediatrics residencies was renewed recently.

 You're so funny Jalby. You are the giver of bad news when it comes to other Cali schools but you always find a way to promote USC. Rock on. :meanie:
