Anyone getting/have an iPod?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a 10GB ipod that I got for super-cheap because I work at a computer store. I like it alot, I'm not sure how useful it will be for med school per se but I've loaded about 350 songs in it and its not even a quarter full. Mostly I hook it up to my car cassette player and listen to all the CD's I have loaded onto it so that I don't have to change CD's while driving. I think you can also put your calendar and phone numbers into it if you have the programs for that on your mac, so that may be helpful too. They just came out with a 30GB ipod that may be really cool, practically an extra hard drive. Hope this helps!

Got one a year and half ago. I use it everyday, litterally. I love mine and recomend it to anyone considering. I've only got the old 5gb but I'm saving up to upgrade.

Some ways I have used it in just the past few weeks:

-Music, of course (I've got about 600 songs on it right now)
-Audio Books (Rip the CD's on my computer and x-port'm to iPod)
-Anatomy Recordings (I record my own anatomy tables and listen/self-quiz in the car)

I often use my iPod while

-Driving
-Running
-At work (don't tell my boss)

I give it 10 stars.

Are you deciding whether to tack on the extra ipod with a new mac purchase to get the rebate?

If so...for $69(269-200 rebate) I'd say the 10gb is worth it. Most 128 mb mp3 players out there are running at least $100. $69 for a 10gb mp3 player is well worth it if you like listening to music wherever you go.

Its usefulness however, will depend on how often you listen to music on the go.

I've heard about the calender and phone numbers that can be stored on the ipod but i'd much rather use my palm for that.

This seems more like lounge material, but in any case, I'm expecting my 15GB ipod to come in today (if anyone is serious about buying one, check amazon because they "secretly" lowered the price and you can also get free shipping)....I'm kind of nervous because I'm a windows user and I've heard some mixed reviews about its compatibility with windows, but hopefully it will work as well as it's said to.

I have no regrets, however, about dumping my 1.5 year old Archos Jukebox. (I should have known when I saw it was a French company.) It works well for a while but slowly conks out. Support is also not toll-free, and it's not fun working out when every 8 minutes the music stops and you have to reset....after a while you just want to pull one of these: +pissed+

As for utility....I can't say anything for med school, but it's nice to have for long walks across campus or during workouts. Music definitely makes it easier to exercise.

I don't have an ipod, but I have a cd player. It doesn't skip either, it's padded by $300 😀

Good one, Danwsu! Read Penny Arcade?

I have a 20 gig iPod, and it's one of the best things I've ever bought. I can't recommend it enough. I don't think it will really be useful in medical school, but, well, I do like to listen to music while I study.

I bought one yesterday and realized that the hookup to my current computer doesn't facilitate the iPod. I'm going to buy a new computer anyway. I just went to a friend's house to get his mp3's and this thing is completely aweome. Get one. I'll be in NY and I think walking around with music will make me feel like I'm in a movie. That's why I bought it.

This is probably better suited for the lounge...nevertheless, I just bought a mpio w/256mb memory, expandable to 512mb. It works great and is crazy small and crazy cool.

I want an mp3 player where you can insert memory cards so it is infinitely expandable. suggestions?

so i my dad got me a dell laptop and i was going to buy a zip drive for it or some type of docking station, but then someone said that zip drives are becoming obsolete and that i should get the iPod...

is this true? any more suggestions?

yes. get a cd-rw drive instead. they store 6x more than zip disks.

Want one but can't afford it yet. Saving up for a 17" Powerbook G4 for med school.

yup, i have the archos jukebox and i'll agree it isn't as well-designed as the Ipod - it konks out often, the battery packs are big, and it can't be used as a calendar, palmpilot, etc.

this is why I want the new sony clie -- but I can't b/c I already have an older one (w/o mp3 player 🙁 )

I just bought one (a 10gig 'new' one) for my significant other for graduation; I have to admit, they're pretty cool and fun. Doubt it'd be useful at all for med school (you can sync it with your calendar and contacts like a palm, but that's about it). You can also use it as a portable firewire drive.

I have a used Nomad II MG from Creative that's fully expandable with SmartMedia. It was much cheaper, and personally, I don't find that I really *need* 10 gigs of music to carry around. I've got 45 songs on my memory card (3-4 albums), I listen to those for a couple weeks until I get bored with them, and then just move on to some other music.

I now have my ipod.....it overall works nicely, but the "touchpad" design of the buttons and scroll wheel can be irritating--they're sooo sensitive! I'll just need to get used to swtiching the "hold" button on all the time. That and I'm kind of irked that I was told that it would charge while connected to my computer via firewire, but apparently that doesn't hold true for the 4-pin port on my dell.

FYI...

Apple has a $200 rebate on ipods from now until sept I believe if you purchase a powerbook or ibook.

ipod rebate

Also...for anyone thats going to buy a powerbook or ibook...make sure you take advantage of the educational discount offered by apple. Usually knocks off $100-150 from the original apple price.

THat iPod rebate is Sweet! I was planning on getting a powerbook this summer. Now I'm throwin' in an iPod too! THanks for the tip.😀

I listen to my iPod almost every day. It's nice to use while walking on campus. And sometimes I do study with music, so it comes in handy. It was so darn expensive, so it took a lot for me to take the plunge. I 😍 it though.🙂

Me! Me! Me! I'm getting an ipod before classes start this fall! Man, it's one of the coolest things...and I really loooove music! 😀

For God's sake will you people quit buying Apple products so that company can die in peace? Their computers are so woefully underpowered with no relief in sight that they've been reduced to selling gadgets to make ends meet. And music, lol.

Just look at poor Dell and hp. Dell is now selling PDA's and printers. Even notebook carrying cases! And poor hp has even branched into the medical industry. Imagine that! Those poor fellas!

Apple computers are not underpowered. Remember, you can't compare processors by MHz or GHz. You have to factor in the number of operations per clock cycle.

People have been predicting the demise of Apple since it was founded. In fact, I think Apple and Dell are the only two profitable computer makers right now. Apple profits because they innovate. Dell makes a profit because they are the Wal-Mart of computers.

And btw, Wrigley, Apple has $6 billion (yeah, billion) in cash reserves, so I would'nt hold your breath on them going out of business anytime soon.

Motorola isn't going to design any new processors for Apple because it doesn't make financial sense (They lost money on the Power PC after apple killed off mac clones). Macs are already underpowered compared to cheaper PCs, whos upgrade line of new processors is assured by Intel and AMD. It used to be that mac users got more power and features in return for buying a more expensive machine, but that is no longer the case.

Here are some decent summaries on Apple's situation:
