Hi all!

I'm starting my master's in public health this fall. I definitely want to do public health work, but I'm exploring options for clinical work as well. For some of the public health positions I've taken interest in, many professionals are also physicians. From what I've seen, I'd prefer the DO to MD but in order to commit to that path there's a lot of things I need to think about. I'm young enough (21) that I wouldn't mind taking the time/commitment, but I'm looking into whether or not this is a reasonable pursuit.

So has anyone gone for the DO after an MPH? Any concerns or thoughts about going this route?

I'd had plenty of students do this.

The D.O. I shadowed got his MPH before attending medical school.

A few students in my class have an MPH before starting med school

I'm an osteopathic medical student with my MPH. Feel free to message me with any specific questions.

I'm only a first-year, but so far I'm glad I did it... I definitely want to be a clinician, but it has rounded my perspective on things and who knows -- may open some doors in the future. I also believe it helped me get accepted. Being familiar and comfortable with certain topics definitely helped with interviews.

As for the negatives...a bit of extra debt to worry about now, on top of the insane cost of med school. But I guess that depends on your financial situation/institution.

Also, I'm glad your considering DO; public health melds well with osteopathic philosophy.

Hey there. I'm currently finishing up my MPH and applying to Osteopathic Schools for 2016. I think the public health mentality definitely lends itself to becoming a DO, according to the clinicians I've spoken with. I'm graduating with a degree in Epidemiology, but there are many other subsets of public health that can help you as a future physician (global health, maternal and child health, and health education, to name a few).

I'm in the same boat, I'm in an MPH program and studying to take my MCAT right now just in case I want to do DO. I'm not sure if I'll even get in at this point because I had an extremely low GPA in undergrad. Thinking about working in public health and retaking classes if this is truly the route I want to take. Thoughts?

I'm an osteopathic medical student with a M.S. in a public health field. It hasn't come in useful very often so far, but I can see where it might someday.

I believe the OP should ask this question: How many of you regret your MPH (excluding the fact that it helped you to get into medical school) ?

I just finished my MPH in December and am also applying for DO schools this cycle. I definitely agree with wallflower127 as the principles/mindset are very similar between the 2. I feel the my education and experiences in public health will make me a better physician in the future. I also attended a school which offered an accelerated MPH program and I was able to finish in a little over a year. This helped drastically reduce costs and honestly, I probably wouldn't have done it if it was 2 years just because it would have gotten too expensive.

Did an MPH and PhD (Public Health/Epidemiology) prior to becoming a med student. No regrets! However, my MPH was paid for by the military so I didn't have any debt from that program.

I got an MPH and it has not served me any purposes. If you want to address a low undergrad GPA, do a postbacc or masters that links to direct acceptance to med school.
